Amused

Chapter 6: The Marriage He Built on a Lie

For a moment, nobody spoke.

The office felt smaller.

The air felt heavier.

Eleanor Vale stood across from me with the same calm expression my grandfather used to wear when he already knew the answer to a question everyone else was still trying to understand.

My eyes moved from her to the folder on my desk.

Then back to her.

“My husband?””

Eleanor nodded.

“Daniel Mercer.””

I almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it sounded impossible.

Daniel was ambitious.

Daniel was arrogant.

Daniel was cruel.

But a criminal mastermind?

That was harder to accept.

Vanessa looked uncomfortable beside me.

“You knew?””

Eleanor looked at her.

“Yes.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“How?””

“Because Richard told me.””

The name changed the atmosphere instantly.

Richard Vale.

The man whose shadow seemed to appear behind every secret.

I picked up the folder.

“What is this?””

“Everything my father tried to hide.””

I opened it.

The first document was old.

A company agreement.

The second was a series of bank records.

The third was a photograph.

Daniel.

Standing beside Richard.

My fingers tightened.

“When was this taken?””

“Two years ago.””

Two years.

Before the promotion.

Before Vanessa.

Before the gala.

Before Daniel ever admitted he wanted a different life.

“What were they discussing?””

Eleanor looked at me.

“You.””

I stared at her.

“Me?””

“Yes.””

She sat down slowly.

“Your grandfather built Harlow Capital around one principle.””

“What principle?””

“That ownership should protect people, not control them.””

I nodded.

I had heard that my entire life.

“Richard disagreed.””

“Because he wanted control.””

“Yes.””

Eleanor looked at the documents.

“My father believed the only thing standing between him and complete control was your grandfather’s trust.””

“And me.””

“Yes.””

The room went quiet.

I finally understood.

Daniel wasn’t a man who accidentally hurt me.

He was a man who had been moving toward me from the beginning.

A man who had studied the distance between himself and power.

Then found a shortcut.

Marriage.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did he tell you any of this?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“What did he tell you?””

“That you were going to divorce him.””

I waited.

“He said the marriage was already dead. That you didn’t understand him anymore.””

I looked away.

The worst lies were always mixed with pieces of truth.

Daniel and I had grown apart.

But I never knew he was creating the distance intentionally.

“He said once he became Regional Operations Director, everything would change.””

“What did he mean?””

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“He said Vantage Meridian would become the first step.””

“The first step toward what?””

She looked at Eleanor.

Then me.

“Toward Harlow Capital.””

That evening, I went through every document Eleanor brought.

Every page revealed another layer.

Daniel had met Richard three years earlier.

Not through me.

Through business connections.

Richard had noticed Daniel’s hunger.

His willingness to do anything to climb.

The exact qualities that made him dangerous.

One document stood out.

A private agreement.

My eyes stopped on the signature.

Daniel Mercer.

The agreement wasn’t complete.

It was only a draft.

But the purpose was clear.

If Daniel gained access to Harlow Capital through marriage, he would receive financial benefits after gaining influence over the trust.

I read the sentence twice.

Then a third time.

Receive benefits.

Like I was a transaction.

Like our marriage was an investment.

Thomas found me still sitting there hours later.

“You haven’t eaten.””

I looked up.

“I’m fine.””

He didn’t believe me.

He placed a small plate on the desk.

“Your grandfather would be angry.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because he spent years teaching you not to underestimate yourself.””

I smiled sadly.

“He also taught me to believe the best in people.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

Then he looked at the documents.

“And some people take advantage of that.””

I closed the folder.

“I need to know everything.””

“You will.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“I mean everything.””

Thomas understood.

“You want the truth about Daniel.””

“Yes.””

“Even if it hurts?””

I looked at the wedding photo sitting on my shelf.

Daniel and me.

Smiling.

Young.

Certain.

“I already know it hurts.””

I touched the frame.

“I just need to know how long I was the only one who didn’t know.””

The next morning, I received an unexpected visitor.

Daniel.

Of course.

He walked into my office wearing a perfect suit.

The same confidence.

The same smile.

Like he was still the man standing beneath the ballroom lights.

“Claire.””

I didn’t invite him to sit.

“What are you doing here?””

He looked around.

Really looked.

For the first time.

The walls.

The documents.

The Harlow name displayed quietly throughout the office.

His expression changed slightly.

“You never told me.””

There was no apology.

No regret.

Only realization.

“You never asked.””

He laughed.

“That’s not funny.””

“No.””

I looked at him.

“It isn’t.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Claire, we need to talk.””

“We do?””

“Yes.””

He lowered his voice.

“Things got out of control.””

I stared at him.

“Did they?””

“Yes.””

“Or did everything happen exactly how you planned?””

His face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“What does that mean?””

“You tell me.””

Silence.

Then he smiled.

A careful smile.

The kind people use when they are trying to regain control.

“I know you’re upset.””

“Upset?””

“Yes.””

“You planned to use my family’s company.””

His expression froze.

Just slightly.

Enough.

I noticed.

“How much do you know?””

There it was.

Not denial.

Not confusion.

A question.

How much do you know?

I stepped closer.

“Enough.””

Daniel looked toward the window.

“You don’t understand.””

“Try me.””

“This world isn’t as simple as you think.””

“Meaning?””

“Meaning people like your grandfather built empires because they knew how to make difficult choices.””

I stared at him.

“You’re comparing yourself to my grandfather?””

“No.””

He looked back at me.

“I’m saying I learned from him.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“My grandfather would hate what you did.””

“Your grandfather was a businessman.””

“He was a good man.””

Daniel smiled.

“And that was his weakness.””

The words cut deeper than I expected.

Because they weren’t just insulting my grandfather.

They were insulting everything I believed.

“You really think kindness is weakness.””

“Yes.””

“And what is cruelty?””

“Necessary.””

I looked at the man I had loved.

And suddenly I understood.

Daniel didn’t become this person.

He had always been this person.

I just had not wanted to see him.

“You need to leave.””

His expression hardened.

“Claire.””

“No.””

“You think you have won because you found some documents?””

I said nothing.

“Do you know how many people are against you?””

That caught my attention.

“What?””

Daniel smiled.

“You think this is just me?””

The room went still.

“There are people who have been waiting for you to step into this role.””

“What people?””

He moved toward the door.

“I shouldn’t have said anything.””

“Daniel.””

He stopped.

“Who?””

He looked back.

And for the first time since the gala, he looked afraid.

“Ask your grandfather.””

“He’s dead.””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“That’s the problem.””

Then he left.

That night, I returned to the black ledger.

I opened it again.

This time, I searched for Daniel’s name.

Nothing.

Not until the very last pages.

My grandfather’s final entries.

My hands shook as I read.

Daniel Mercer.

The name was written there.

But the date was impossible.

Eight years before I met him.

My heart stopped.

Eight years.

Before our first date.

Before our wedding.

Before I even knew his name.

Below it, my grandfather had written one sentence.

A warning.

Not about Daniel.

About me.

“If Claire ever meets this man, she must know the truth before she falls in love.””

I turned the page.

There was another note.

Shorter.

More frightening.

“The person who brings Daniel into her life will be someone she trusts.””

I stared at the words.

My phone rang.

Eleanor.

I answered immediately.

“Claire.””

Her voice was urgent.

“You found the note, didn’t you?””

“How did you know?””

“Because my father was looking for that page.””

I stood.

“What page?””

“The one that explains why Daniel chose you.””

I looked down.

At the empty space beneath the final note.

A page had been removed.

“Eleanor…”

“Yes?””

“Someone tore a page out of my grandfather’s ledger.””

Silence.

Then she whispered:

“Claire.””

“What?””

“That page wasn’t about Daniel.””

My heart pounded.

“Then what was it about?””

Her answer came quietly.

“It was about the person who introduced you to him.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who?””

May you like

And Eleanor said the name I had been avoiding since the beginning.

“Andrew Harlow.””
