Chapter 4: The Enemy Wearing a Familiar Face
The message remained on my screen for almost five minutes.
I read it again.
And again.
Daniel Mercer is not the person you should be afraid of.
The sentence should have scared me.
Instead, it made me angry.
Because I was tired of secrets.
Tired of people deciding what I deserved to know.
Tired of everyone around me moving pieces on a chessboard while I was the last person allowed to see the game.
I looked at the photograph of Vanessa.
She wasn’t smiling.
She wasn’t wearing the confident expression she had at the gala.
She looked exhausted.
Afraid.
That was not the face of a woman who had just stolen another woman’s husband.
That was the face of someone who had discovered she was trapped.
I grabbed my coat.
“Thomas.””
He appeared in the doorway almost immediately.
“Yes, Mrs. Harlow?””
“Take me to the café.””
His eyes moved to my phone.
“Are you sure?””
“No.””
I picked up my purse.
“But I’m done waiting until I am.””
The café was hidden between two office buildings downtown.
The kind of place executives visited when they didn’t want to be recognized.
Dark wooden tables.
Quiet music.
People speaking in low voices over expensive coffee.
Vanessa sat in the corner.
She looked different without the silver dress and diamonds.
Just a woman wearing a simple black coat, both hands wrapped around a coffee cup she hadn’t touched.
When she saw me, her face changed.
Fear first.
Then relief.
“Claire.””
I stopped at the table.
“You wanted to talk.””
She looked around.
“Sit down.””
“I’ll stand.””
A small, bitter smile crossed her face.
“I guess I deserve that.””
I studied her.
The woman who had stood beside Daniel while he destroyed my marriage.
The woman who had kissed him in front of me.
The woman I believed had been waiting to replace me.
“Why did you contact me?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because I made a mistake.””
I laughed quietly.
“A mistake?””
“Yes.””
“You slept with my husband. You helped him humiliate me. You stood beside him while he announced our divorce.””
Her eyes filled with guilt.
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
She swallowed.
“I didn’t know he was going to do that.””
I stared at her.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
She looked up.
“I expect you to hate me.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
Vanessa reached into her purse and placed a folder on the table.
“I brought this.””
I didn’t touch it.
“What is it?””
“Proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Her voice dropped.
“That Daniel was never planning to leave you because he loved me.””
The words landed heavily.
“He was planning to use me.””
I looked at the folder.
Slowly, I opened it.
Inside were copies of emails.
Messages.
Financial documents.
The first page showed Daniel’s name.
My eyes moved down.
Then stopped.
A transfer request.
A large amount of money.
Sent through a private account connected to Vanessa.
I looked at her.
“What is this?””
“He asked me to move company information.””
My expression hardened.
“Explain.””
Vanessa rubbed her hands together.
“He told me there was a merger coming. He said certain executives were trying to block him, and he needed information to protect his position.””
“And you believed him?””
“At first.””
She looked away.
“Because he made me feel important.””
I said nothing.
She continued.
“He told me I was the only person at Vantage Meridian who understood him.””
The words sounded familiar.
Because Daniel had once said similar things to me.
Not about business.
About life.
About how I was the only person who believed in him.
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“Then I found out he wasn’t collecting information to protect himself.””
“What was he doing?””
“He was selling it.””
The café suddenly felt too quiet.
“To who?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why should I believe you?””
“Because I have the emails.””
She pointed at the folder.
“And because I’m scared.””
I looked at her carefully.
“For the first time tonight, I believe you.””
She looked surprised.
“But I’m still not your friend.””
“I know.””
“And I still haven’t forgiven you.””
“I know.””
“Good.””
A sad smile appeared on her face.
“I expected that.””
An hour later, I sat in my home office reading every document Vanessa had given me.
The deeper I went, the worse it became.
Daniel wasn’t just ambitious.
Ambition had rules.
Daniel had none.
He had been gathering internal information for months.
Client contracts.
Expansion plans.
Executive discussions.
Things he had no right to access.
Then I found something that made me stop.
A message from Daniel to an unknown recipient.
The wording was simple.
The damage behind it was not.
“Once I have the promotion, Harlow access becomes easier.””
My hands went cold.
Harlow access.
Not my money.
Not my name.
Access.
Daniel had not married me because he loved the woman I was.
He married me because he was trying to enter a world he could not reach alone.
I remembered our wedding day.
Daniel holding my hands.
His eyes full of emotion.
“I can’t believe someone like you chose me.””
At the time, I thought he meant love.
Now I wondered if he meant opportunity.
My phone rang.
Elliot.
I answered immediately.
“You found something.””
“Yes.””
His voice was serious.
“Claire, we reviewed the documents from Vanessa.””
“And?””
“Most of them are legitimate.””
I leaned back.
“Most?””
“There’s one problem.””
Of course there was.
“What?””
“We found evidence that Daniel wasn’t working alone.””
I looked at the message again.
Harlow access.
“Andrew?””
A pause.
“No.””
My heart tightened.
“Then who?””
Elliot hesitated.
“Someone with more authority.””
“Inside Vantage?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Before he could answer, another call came through.
Unknown number.
I looked at Elliot’s name.
Then the unknown call.
Something told me to answer.
“I’ll call you back.””
I switched lines.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice responded.
“Claire Harlow?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Robert Hale.””
I recognized the name immediately.
Vantage Meridian’s Chief Executive Officer.
The person at the top.
The man whose approval could change careers.
“Why are you calling me?””
A long silence.
Then:
“Because I owe your grandfather a debt.””
I stood.
“What does my grandfather have to do with this?””
Robert sighed.
“More than you know.””
I gripped the phone.
“Mr. Hale, if you know something about my husband, I suggest you tell me now.””
“I know.””
His voice became lower.
“I know Daniel Mercer was planning to use your family’s influence to gain control over a major company acquisition.””
I froze.
“How?””
“Because someone helped him.””
“Who?””
Another pause.
Then he said:
“The person who introduced Daniel to Vantage Meridian.””
My heart pounded.
“Andrew Harlow?””
“No.””
I closed my eyes.
Then who?
Robert continued.
“Claire, your cousin Andrew was only a messenger.””
The room went silent.
“He was following orders.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Whose orders?””
Robert answered.
And the name that came next was one I never expected.
“Your grandfather’s former business partner.””
I frowned.
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because he died twelve years ago.””
Robert said nothing.
And that silence frightened me more than any answer.
“Claire…”
His voice became almost a whisper.
“You need to look into the old Harlow records.””
“Why?””
“Because the person trying to take control of your family’s company…”
I waited.
“…has been preparing for this since before you met Daniel.””
The call ended.
I stood alone in my office.
The documents on my desk suddenly felt different.
This was no longer about a cheating husband.
No longer about a ruined marriage.
Daniel had been a piece in something much bigger.
A plan that had started years ago.
I walked toward the locked cabinet in the corner of the room.
The one I had never opened since my grandfather died.
Inside were his private records.
His final documents.
His warnings.
I had always respected his privacy.
But now I understood something.
My grandfather had not hidden those files because he wanted secrets.
He had hidden them because he knew someone might come looking.
I placed my hand on the lock.
Then my phone buzzed.
A final message appeared.
This time, there was a name.
Andrew.
The message contained only one sentence.
“Claire, whatever you do, don’t open Grandpa’s black ledger.””
I stared at the words.
Because Andrew had just confirmed one thing.
May you like
He knew exactly what was inside.
And he was terrified that I would find it.
