Amused

Chapter 9: The Last Move of the Hale Family

The room remained silent after Andrew finished speaking.

I looked at him.

"How much money are we talking about?""

He lowered his eyes.

"Approximately forty million dollars.""

Eleanor immediately asked, "Where is the money held?""

"In a family trust established by my parents.""

My father frowned.

"Why would Danielle be entitled to it?""

Andrew removed another document from his coat.

"Because my mother amended the trust before she died. She wanted her biological grandchildren to be protected.""

I looked at the paper.

"Did she know about me?""

Andrew nodded.

"She suspected. Your mother contacted her shortly before she died.""

My heart tightened.

"Did my mother know your family?""

"She knew my mother through the foundation. They became friends.""

He paused.

"Your mother told her about the clinic's donor program. She also explained that she had discovered irregularities involving the Hale family's business interests.""

My father looked at him.

"And your mother changed the trust?""

"Yes.""

Andrew handed the document to Eleanor.

"She added a provision. If I had a biological child, that child would become the primary beneficiary of a separate family trust.""

Eleanor examined the document.

"Was it executed properly?""

"Yes. The amendment was signed, witnessed, and registered with the trust administrator.""

"Then why hasn't Danielle been contacted?""

Andrew looked ashamed.

"Because Robert and Victoria intercepted the correspondence.""

My father stared at him.

"How?""

"Robert controlled the family office. Victoria handled the private administration. They claimed the donor records were incomplete and that no biological child could be verified.""

Eleanor looked up.

"Did the trustees know?""

"Some did. Others were given incomplete information.""

I looked at Andrew.

"Why didn't you fight them?""

He lowered his head.

"I tried.""

"When?""

"Several times. But every time I requested access to the original records, someone told me the documents were confidential or had been destroyed.""

I shook my head.

"That doesn't make sense.""

Andrew nodded.

"I know.""

He took another breath.

"Then, three weeks ago, I received an anonymous message. It contained a copy of your mother's letter and a photograph of you holding Grace outside the hospital.""

I instinctively held my daughter closer.

"Someone was watching me?""

"I don't know who took the photograph. But the message said you had given birth to a daughter and that Victoria intended to contact you.""

My father stepped forward.

"Why didn't you contact us immediately?""

Andrew looked at him.

"Because I was afraid Victoria would destroy the remaining records before I could secure them.""

Eleanor closed the trust document.

"Mr. Hale, if these documents are authentic, we need to notify the trustees immediately.""

Andrew nodded.

"I agree.""

My father looked toward Daniel.

"Arrange a secure meeting with the trust administrator. Nobody from the Hale family should be permitted to alter the records.""

Daniel made a note.

"Yes, sir.""

I sat quietly, trying to absorb everything.

Forty million dollars.

A biological father I had never known.

A grandmother who had apparently changed her will before I was born.

And a woman who had slapped me in a hotel lobby because she believed I didn't belong there.

It was almost too much to comprehend.

I looked at Andrew.

"Do you want something from me?""

His expression changed.

"What do you mean?""

"Are you here because you want a daughter, or because you want me to claim the money?""

He looked genuinely hurt.

Then he slowly sat down.

"Danielle, I understand why you would ask that.""

He glanced at Grace.

"When I first learned there might be a child, I wanted to find you. But your mother had asked for privacy, and I respected that.""

He paused.

"I didn't know if you were happy. I didn't know whether you had a father who loved you. I didn't want to walk into your life and make it more complicated.""

I looked at my father.

Andrew followed my gaze.

"Richard raised you. I know that.""

My father remained silent.

Andrew continued.

"I'm not here to replace him. I never could.""

His voice cracked.

"I came because Victoria is threatening you, and because your mother's final wishes deserve to be respected.""

I looked down.

For a long moment, nobody spoke.

Then I asked, "Did you ever see a picture of me when I was little?""

Andrew nodded.

"Your mother sent me one.""

He reached into his wallet.

It was an old photograph.

A little girl with brown curls sat on a wooden swing in a garden.

I recognized the dress.

My mother had taken that picture on my fourth birthday.

I stared at it.

"Where did you get this?""

"Your mother sent it to me.""

He smiled sadly.

"I've carried it for twenty years.""

I didn't know what to say.

I wasn't ready to call him my father.

I wasn't ready to forgive him for being absent.

But I could see that he was hurting too.

Before I could speak, Eleanor's phone rang.

She answered.

"Yes?""

A few seconds passed.

Then she looked at my father.

"Richard, the board meeting has been moved forward.""

"To when?""

"Tomorrow morning.""

"Why?""

Eleanor hesitated.

"Thomas Whitaker has requested an emergency vote regarding the Halcyon Grand incident and the proposed suspension of your executive authority.""

My father frowned.

"My authority?""

"He's claiming there may be a conflict of interest because Danielle is personally involved.""

I stared at her.

"Are they trying to remove Dad?""

Eleanor nodded.

"Temporarily, pending an investigation.""

My father laughed once.

It wasn't a happy sound.

"Thomas has chosen an interesting time to become concerned about governance.""

Eleanor looked toward the laptop.

"There's more. The board received an anonymous package containing copies of the medical agreement and several financial records.""

Andrew stood.

"Victoria.""

My father nodded.

"Almost certainly.""

Eleanor continued.

"The package claims Brooks Hospitality used company resources to conceal the Hale family's financial misconduct.""

I felt anger rising.

"She's blaming Dad for what she did?""

"She's attempting to redirect attention," Eleanor replied.

My father looked at me.

"Danielle, this is why we need to be careful. The truth is important, but we have to establish it properly.""

I nodded.

Then Daniel entered the office.

"Mr. Brooks, there's someone downstairs who refuses to leave.""

My father frowned.

"Who?""

"Mrs. Hale.""

Victoria.

Again.

"Where is she?""

"At reception. She's demanding to speak with Danielle.""

I looked at my father.

"I'll speak to her.""

He shook his head.

"You don't have to.""

"I know.""

I adjusted Grace's blanket.

"But I want to.""

My father studied me.

Then he nodded.

"We'll be right beside you.""

We returned to the lobby.

Victoria was standing near the reception desk.

She had changed clothes.

The fuchsia dress was gone, replaced by a black designer suit. Her hair was still perfect, and her makeup showed no sign of the afternoon's events.

But her expression was different.

She looked exhausted.

When she saw me, she approached.

"Danielle.""

I didn't respond.

She glanced at my father.

"Richard, I need to speak with your daughter privately.""

"No," he replied.

Victoria sighed.

"Fine. Then I'll speak here.""

She turned toward me.

"I want you to understand that things have become unnecessarily complicated.""

I stared at her.

"You hit me.""

She closed her eyes.

"Yes. I regret that.""

"Do you regret hitting me, or do you regret discovering who my father is?""

Victoria looked irritated.

"Must you keep repeating that?""

"Yes.""

She glanced toward Grace.

Then she lowered her voice.

"Your mother and I had a complicated relationship.""

I felt my heart tighten.

"You knew my mother?""

"Yes.""

"How?""

Victoria looked toward my father.

He said nothing.

She continued.

"Your mother was involved in a business dispute with my family. She became convinced that everyone was conspiring against her.""

My father stepped forward.

"Stop lying.""

Victoria looked at him.

"Richard, I am trying to explain.""

"No. You're trying to rewrite history.""

Victoria turned back toward me.

"Your mother wasn't innocent in all of this.""

I felt something inside me snap.

"Don't talk about her.""

"She signed documents.""

"Which documents?""

Victoria hesitated.

"Documents related to the foundation.""

"Do you have them?""

"Of course.""

"Then show them.""

She stared at me.

For the first time, she had no immediate answer.

I continued.

"Show us the original documents. Show us the signatures. Show us the medical records. Show us everything.""

Victoria looked toward Eleanor.

"I don't have to answer your questions.""

"Then why are you here?""

She pressed her lips together.

Then she reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.

"Because I have something you need to see.""

My father immediately stepped between us.

"Hand it to Eleanor.""

Victoria shook her head.

"It's addressed to Danielle.""

Eleanor took the envelope using a protective document sleeve.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

My mother stood beside Victoria at a charity event.

They were smiling.

On the back was a handwritten date.

Three months before my mother's death.

I looked at the picture.

Then I noticed something in the background.

A man standing near the entrance.

I recognized him from the photograph Andrew had shown us.

Andrew stepped forward.

"That's Robert.""

Victoria nodded.

"Yes.""

She looked at me.

"Your mother wasn't investigating us because she wanted to expose a crime. She was trying to get something from my family.""

My father frowned.

"What?""

Victoria smiled faintly.

"She wanted the original donor agreement.""

Eleanor looked at the photograph again.

"Why?""

Victoria's expression hardened.

"Because she knew Danielle's biological father was connected to the trust.""

Andrew stepped forward.

"That's not true.""

Victoria looked at him.

"Isn't it?""

She reached into her handbag again.

This time, she removed a folded piece of paper.

"Your mother wrote this to Robert.""

My father took the document.

He read the first few lines.

Then his face changed.

I moved closer.

"What does it say?""

He didn't answer.

I took the paper from his hand.

The letter was short.

It contained only a few paragraphs.

But one sentence stood out.

If Danielle ever learns the truth, she must never be allowed to claim the Hale inheritance.

I looked at Victoria.

"Why would Mom write that?""

Victoria's smile returned.

"Because she knew the money wasn't meant for you.""

Andrew stepped forward.

"That's not her letter.""

Victoria turned.

"How would you know?""

"Because I saw the original correspondence.""

He reached for the document.

Eleanor stopped him.

"Please don't touch it.""

Andrew looked at the signature.

Then he shook his head.

"The handwriting is wrong.""

Victoria laughed.

"Convenient.""

Andrew pointed toward the bottom.

"Your mother always signed her name with a small line beneath the final letter. That's missing.""

My father looked at Eleanor.

"Have it examined.""

Eleanor nodded.

Victoria stepped backward.

"Believe whatever you want. The board has already received a copy.""

Then she turned toward me.

"You should think very carefully about what happens next, Danielle. Your mother made a choice years ago. Perhaps you should respect it.""

I stared at her.

"Get out.""

Victoria blinked.

"What?""

"You heard me.""

My father didn't intervene.

I continued.

"You came into this hotel, saw a mother holding her baby, and decided she wasn't good enough to sit in a chair. You slapped me. You lied about what happened. You tried to destroy evidence.""

My voice trembled.

"But you will never use my mother's name to make me ashamed of who I am.""

Victoria's smile disappeared.

I held Grace closer.

"And if you have real evidence, show it in court. If you don't, stop threatening my family.""

Victoria stared at me.

Then she turned and walked toward the entrance.

But before she reached the doors, her phone rang.

She answered.

"Robert?""

She listened.

Her expression changed.

"What do you mean?""

A pause.

Then she whispered:

"That's impossible.""

She ended the call and turned toward us.

For the first time, I saw genuine panic in her eyes.

Andrew frowned.

"What happened?""

Victoria looked at him.

Then at me.

"Your grandmother's lawyer has just confirmed that the trust is being frozen.""

Eleanor stepped forward.

"On whose instruction?""

Victoria's voice shook.

"On the instruction of the original trustee.""

My father looked at Andrew.

"Who is that?""

Andrew swallowed.

Then he answered.

"My mother.""

I stared at him.

"But you said she died.""

Andrew nodded.

"She did.""

He looked toward the doors Victoria had just entered through.

"Which means someone has finally located the original trust administrator.""

And then Eleanor's phone rang.

She answered.

A few seconds later, she looked at my father.

"Richard, the trustee has requested a meeting with Danielle.""

"Why Danielle?""

Eleanor looked at the document in her hand.

"Because the trust contains a final provision.""

She paused.

"Apparently, your mother arranged for Danielle to receive something that cannot be transferred, sold, or inherited by anyone else.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

Eleanor swallowed.

"Control of the original evidence.""

My father stared at the photograph.

Then he looked at me.

And suddenly, the forty million dollars seemed like the least important part of the story.

Because my mother had not simply left me money.

May you like

She had left me the one thing Victoria Hale had spent years trying to destroy.

The truth.
