Amused

Chapter 5: The Agreement My Father Never Mentioned

The board chairman's name was Thomas Whitaker.

He had worked with my father for nearly twenty years and had helped oversee several of Brooks Hospitality Group's largest acquisitions.

I had met him twice.

Both times, he had been polite, reserved, and almost painfully formal.

But I had never heard him sound like he did that afternoon.

"Richard, are you aware of the documents circulating among the board?""

My father kept the phone on speaker.

"What documents?""

"An agreement involving the Hale family and Brooks Hospitality.""

My father looked toward Eleanor.

She immediately opened her briefcase again.

Thomas continued.

"Victoria claims the company entered into a private arrangement with her family. She says your daughter has benefited from it.""

I frowned.

"Benefited how?""

My father held up one hand, asking me to wait.

"Thomas, send the documents to Eleanor.""

"They're already being forwarded.""

"Who authorized the agreement?""

There was a pause.

"That's what we're trying to determine.""

My father looked directly at me.

"Was my daughter's name included?""

"Yes.""

I felt the blood drain from my face.

"Why?""

My father didn't answer.

Thomas continued.

"Richard, the document appears to contain your electronic signature.""

My father frowned.

"My signature?""

"Yes.""

"Send me the original file. Not a forwarded copy. I want the audit history.""

"Understood.""

The call ended.

I stared at my father.

"What is happening?""

He sat beside me.

"Danielle, I want you to understand something. I never signed an agreement giving the Hale family authority over you or your life.""

"Then why is my name on it?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"That's what we're going to find out.""

Eleanor's laptop chimed.

A new email had arrived.

She opened the attachment.

It was a twelve-page document titled:

*PRIVATE FAMILY RELATIONS AND PROPERTY ACCESS AGREEMENT.*

The first page contained the names of Brooks Hospitality Group and VH Lifestyle Consulting.

The second page contained my name.

Danielle Marie Brooks.

I leaned forward.

"What is that?""

Eleanor read through the opening section.

"It appears to be an agreement relating to the use of company properties and certain private hospitality arrangements.""

"Why would I be part of it?""

She scrolled.

"Your name appears under a section titled Family Beneficiaries.""

My father leaned closer.

"Show me the signature page.""

Eleanor moved to the final page.

There it was.

My father's name.

Richard A. Brooks.

Beneath it was an electronic signature dated fourteen months earlier.

I looked at him.

"Dad, did you sign this?""

"No.""

The answer came immediately.

"Are you sure?""

"Completely.""

Eleanor examined the document metadata.

"This copy appears to have been created from a digitally signed PDF, but the original certificate information is missing.""

My father looked at her.

"Can you authenticate it?""

"Not from this copy. We'll need the original file and the electronic signing records.""

I stared at the page.

"Why would Victoria have something like this?""

My father looked toward the entrance.

"Because she wants leverage.""

"Over you?""

"Possibly.""

Eleanor scrolled further.

"There is another section.""

She read aloud.

"The designated family beneficiary may be granted access to selected properties and accommodations under the private guest-relations program.""

I shook my head.

"I never received anything.""

My father nodded.

"Because I never authorized it.""

Eleanor continued reading.

"There's a clause concerning public statements and dispute resolution.""

My father frowned.

"Read it.""

Eleanor's expression became serious.

"It states that any disputes involving the designated beneficiary and the Hale family are to be handled privately through the company's executive office.""

I stared at her.

"What does that mean?""

"It could be interpreted as an attempt to prevent certain complaints from being escalated through ordinary channels.""

My stomach twisted.

"So they used my name?""

"It appears so," Eleanor replied.

"But we need the original records before drawing conclusions.""

My father stood.

"Who had access to my electronic signature?""

Eleanor answered carefully.

"Several senior administrators would have had access to documents prepared for your approval. That doesn't mean they could legitimately sign on your behalf.""

"Find out who uploaded this document.""

"Already working on it.""

I looked at my father.

"Why didn't you tell me about the Hales?""

He turned.

"I had no reason to.""

"But you know them.""

"I know Robert Hale through business circles. We've attended several industry events together.""

"Did you know Victoria was involved in this?""

"No.""

I looked down at the document.

My name appeared again on the third page.

Then again on the sixth.

It was as though someone had taken my identity and turned it into a business instrument.

"Dad, I don't want my name attached to any of this.""

"It won't be.""

He placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder.

"I promise.""

Before I could respond, the receptionist approached.

"Mr. Brooks?""

My father turned.

"Yes, Emily?""

She looked nervous.

"I'm sorry to interrupt, but there's someone at the entrance asking to speak with Danielle.""

I looked up.

"Who?""

Emily hesitated.

"Mrs. Hale's husband.""

My father sighed.

"Robert.""

The glass doors opened.

A man in his late fifties entered wearing a dark gray suit. He was tall, broad-shouldered, and carried himself with the confidence of someone accustomed to being listened to.

His expression was tense.

He walked directly toward us.

"Richard.""

My father nodded.

"Robert.""

Robert looked at me.

"Danielle, I understand there's been an unfortunate misunderstanding.""

I stared at him.

"Your wife slapped me.""

He blinked.

"Yes. I've heard.""

"While I was holding my daughter.""

"I understand.""

"Do you?""

Robert glanced at Grace.

Then he looked toward my father.

"Richard, perhaps we can resolve this without involving the board.""

My father folded his arms.

"Your wife has already involved the board.""

Robert's expression tightened.

"She's upset.""

"She should be.""

Robert exhaled.

"Look, Victoria can be difficult. I won't pretend otherwise. But she's been under tremendous stress.""

I couldn't believe it.

"That's your explanation?""

He looked at me.

"Danielle, I am trying to be reasonable.""

"Reasonable would have been telling her not to hit me.""

Robert's jaw tightened.

"Let's keep emotions out of this.""

My father stepped forward.

"Then let's keep the facts in.""

Robert looked at him.

"What do you want?""

"An explanation for the agreement carrying my signature.""

Robert's expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I noticed.

He glanced at Eleanor.

"Which agreement?""

"The one your wife presented to the board.""

Robert hesitated.

"I haven't seen the full document.""

My father stared at him.

"Then perhaps you should see it now.""

Eleanor handed him the tablet.

He read the first page.

Then the second.

When he reached the signature page, he stopped.

"Where did you get this?""

"From the board chairman," my father replied.

Robert looked toward me.

"Danielle, I think there's been a misunderstanding about the purpose of this arrangement.""

"What arrangement?""

"Your name was included to ensure that certain family-related hospitality matters were handled discreetly.""

"I never agreed to anything.""

Robert nodded.

"I understand.""

"No, you don't. I never signed anything. I never asked for special treatment. I didn't even know this document existed until today.""

Robert rubbed his jaw.

"Victoria may have misunderstood the original discussions.""

My father interrupted.

"There were no discussions involving Danielle.""

Robert looked at him.

"Richard, let's not pretend our families have never discussed private arrangements.""

My father went still.

"What are you referring to?""

Robert seemed to realize he had said too much.

He looked down at the tablet.

Then he changed the subject.

"I think the best course is to withdraw the document and move forward.""

Eleanor shook her head.

"That won't be sufficient. We need to establish who created it, who authorized it, and whether it was used to influence hotel operations.""

Robert's expression hardened.

"You're making this sound criminal.""

"We're determining whether company records were falsified.""

He turned toward my father.

"Richard, do you really want this to become a public scandal?""

My father didn't hesitate.

"If the truth creates a scandal, then the truth isn't the problem.""

Robert stared at him.

Then he looked toward me.

"Danielle, I sincerely regret what happened. Victoria shouldn't have lost her temper.""

I looked directly at him.

"She didn't lose her temper. She looked at me, insulted me, and deliberately slapped me.""

He lowered his eyes.

"I understand.""

"No. You understand that my father owns the hotel.""

Robert said nothing.

That silence told me enough.

My father placed a hand on my back.

"Robert, you should leave.""

Robert looked surprised.

"Richard—"

"Now.""

Robert turned toward the entrance.

But before he walked away, he stopped.

"One more thing.""

My father waited.

Robert lowered his voice.

"Victoria isn't the only person who has access to those agreements.""

Then he left.

I stared after him.

"What did he mean?""

My father looked at Eleanor.

She was already reading through the document again.

"There may be more than one person involved," she said.

My father nodded.

"Find out.""

A few minutes later, Eleanor received another call.

She listened without interrupting.

Then she slowly closed her laptop.

"Richard, I think we have a serious problem.""

"What now?""

"The document was uploaded through an executive account.""

My father frowned.

"Whose?""

Eleanor looked at me.

Then she answered.

"Your daughter.""

I felt my stomach drop.

"That's impossible.""

Eleanor turned the laptop toward me.

The system showed an account labeled DANIELLE BROOKS.

It included a timestamp.

Fourteen months earlier.

I stared at it.

"I didn't upload anything.""

My father stepped closer.

"Could someone have created an account using her name?""

"Yes," Eleanor replied.

"But the account is connected to an email address.""

I leaned forward.

The address was familiar.

Too familiar.

It was an old email account I had stopped using years ago.

An account that only three people knew how to access.

Me.

My father.

And someone who had once worked inside our family home.

I whispered the name.

"Margaret.""

My father froze.

Margaret Collins had worked for our family for nearly twenty years.

She had been my mother's personal assistant before becoming my father's executive secretary.

She had helped organize my graduation party.

She had been there when I brought Grace home from the hospital.

And she had access to many of my father's private documents.

But she had retired eight months earlier.

I looked at my father.

"Why would Margaret use my account?""

He didn't answer.

Instead, he took out his phone.

"Call her.""

Eleanor nodded.

She dialed the number listed in the company's records.

It rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then a woman's voice answered.

"Hello?""

Eleanor put the call on speaker.

"Margaret, this is Eleanor Grant from Brooks Hospitality Group.""

There was a pause.

"Yes?""

"We need to ask you about a document bearing Richard Brooks's electronic signature and Danielle Brooks's name.""

Silence.

May you like

Then Margaret asked a question that made my father close his eyes.

"Has Victoria Hale finally told you what really happened to Danielle's mother?""
