Amused

Chapter 2: The Name That Changed Everything

The two men entered the lobby without saying a word.

Both wore black suits, white shirts, and discreet earpieces.

The taller one scanned the room before spotting me.

"Ms. Brooks?""

I nodded.

"Yes.""

"Are you Danielle Brooks?""

"Yes. Is my father here?""

The man glanced toward the entrance.

"Mr. Brooks is on his way upstairs from the vehicle, ma'am. He asked us to make sure you're safe.""

Victoria let out an amused laugh.

"How dramatic.""

The shorter man looked at her.

"Ma'am, please give us some space.""

Victoria raised her eyebrows.

"Excuse me?""

"You're standing too close to Ms. Brooks.""

She laughed again.

"Do you have any idea who I am?""

The taller man didn't answer.

That seemed to irritate her more than anything.

"Marcus!"" she called.

The manager hurried over.

"Mrs. Hale?""

"Who are these people? Why are they ordering me around?""

Marcus looked at the men.

"Can I help you?""

The taller man reached into his jacket and presented an identification card.

"Daniel Price. Executive Protection.""

Marcus glanced at the card.

His expression remained neutral.

"All right. What does that have to do with this situation?""

Daniel looked toward me.

"We've been instructed to remain with Ms. Brooks until Mr. Brooks arrives.""

Victoria laughed.

"Mr. Brooks? That's supposed to impress me?""

The shorter man spoke for the first time.

"We're not trying to impress anyone.""

Victoria narrowed her eyes.

"Then perhaps you should explain why you're causing a scene in a hotel lobby.""

I couldn't help noticing how differently everyone was being treated.

When I asked Marcus to check the cameras, he had dismissed me.

When Victoria demanded his attention, he practically ran across the room.

Now two men had arrived to protect me, and suddenly the manager seemed uncertain.

"Danielle," Daniel said quietly, "are you comfortable standing here?""

I nodded.

"Yes. But I'd like someone to check my daughter's condition. She got frightened when that woman hit me.""

"Of course. I'll arrange that.""

Marcus interrupted.

"There's no need for outside personnel to interfere with hotel operations.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Then perhaps you should have handled the situation properly before we arrived.""

Marcus stiffened.

"I beg your pardon?""

"You heard me.""

Victoria stepped forward.

"Marcus, I want these men removed.""

Daniel didn't even look at her.

"That's not your decision.""

Victoria's cheeks flushed.

"You cannot speak to me like that.""

The younger man glanced at his colleague.

"Sir, should I call Mr. Brooks?""

Daniel nodded.

"Tell him we're here.""

I looked at the entrance.

My father was still outside.

I knew he was coming.

I also knew that he wouldn't be happy.

My father, Richard Brooks, was a difficult man to surprise. At sixty-one, he had spent most of his life building businesses, negotiating contracts, and managing people who were far more powerful than they appeared.

But he was also the gentlest father I knew.

When my mother died, he learned how to braid my hair from online videos.

When I was sixteen and broke my arm, he slept in a hospital chair for three nights.

When I got pregnant, he had cried harder than I did.

He had never made me feel that I needed to earn his love.

And I knew what he would do when he saw the mark on my face.

He would ask who had done it.

Then he would make sure it never happened again.

A few seconds later, the entrance doors opened.

My father walked inside.

He wore a dark navy overcoat over a white shirt, with no tie. His silver hair was neatly combed, and his expression was unreadable.

Two additional men followed him.

But he didn't look at them.

He looked directly at me.

"Danielle.""

I felt my throat tighten.

"Dad.""

He crossed the lobby in several quick steps.

Then he stopped in front of me and looked at my face.

The red mark was still visible across my cheek.

His eyes moved down to Grace.

"Is she okay?""

I nodded.

"She's just scared.""

He gently touched the blanket around her.

"Hello, little princess.""

Grace made a tiny sound.

My father smiled for half a second.

Then he looked at me again.

"Who hit you?""

I pointed toward Victoria.

"Her.""

My father turned.

Victoria was standing beside Marcus, her arms folded across her chest.

She looked him up and down.

He wasn't wearing anything flashy.

No visible designer labels.

No expensive jewelry.

Just a dark coat and a silver watch.

Victoria seemed unimpressed.

"Are you the father?""

"Yes.""

"Well, perhaps you should teach your daughter how to behave in public.""

My father stared at her.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he asked quietly, "Did you strike my daughter?""

Victoria laughed.

"Your daughter was being disruptive.""

"That wasn't my question.""

"She was disrespectful.""

"Did you strike her?""

Victoria lifted her chin.

"She needed to learn that actions have consequences.""

My father's expression didn't change.

But I knew him well enough to recognize the anger building beneath it.

"Marcus," he said.

The manager looked confused.

"Yes?""

"Are you the general manager here?""

"Yes, sir.""

"Did you witness what happened?""

Marcus shifted his weight.

"I arrived after the disagreement had already started.""

"Did you review the security footage?""

"No.""

"Did you speak to witnesses?""

"I spoke with Mrs. Hale.""

My father nodded slowly.

"Only Mrs. Hale?""

Marcus cleared his throat.

"She is a valued guest of this property.""

My father looked around the lobby.

"And my daughter?""

Marcus hesitated.

"Excuse me?""

"Is my daughter not a valued person?""

"That's not what I meant.""

"Then perhaps you should explain what you meant.""

Victoria interrupted.

"Richard, is it? I think you're misunderstanding the situation. Your daughter walked into a private hotel and started an argument with me.""

My father looked at her.

"Do you know who I am?""

Victoria gave a dismissive smile.

"No. Should I?""

Before he could answer, Marcus stepped forward.

"Sir, I understand you're upset, but I need to ask you and your daughter to leave. This matter has already been addressed.""

My father turned toward him.

"Addressed?""

"Yes.""

"How?""

Marcus looked uncomfortable.

"Mrs. Hale has explained her side of the story.""

"And my daughter has explained hers.""

"Yes, but—"

"But you chose to believe the person wearing diamonds.""

Marcus's face reddened.

"Sir, that's an unfair characterization.""

My father reached into his coat and took out his phone.

He tapped the screen once.

Then he looked at me.

"Sweetheart, has anyone told you who owns this hotel?""

I shook my head.

"No. I just wanted somewhere to feed Grace.""

He gave me a sad smile.

"Of course you did.""

Then he turned back toward Marcus.

"Would you like to answer that question for her?""

Marcus frowned.

"I don't understand.""

My father looked toward the reception desk.

"Would someone please bring me the property ownership file?""

The receptionist looked terrified.

Victoria laughed.

"Ownership file? What is this, some kind of performance?""

My father didn't acknowledge her.

He looked at Daniel.

"Call the regional director.""

Daniel immediately stepped aside.

"Yes, sir.""

Marcus stared at my father.

"Sir, the regional director isn't available to guests.""

My father finally looked directly at him.

"I'm not a guest.""

A strange silence settled over the lobby.

Then my father's phone rang.

He answered.

"Richard Brooks.""

A man's voice came through loudly enough for Marcus to hear.

"Mr. Brooks, we're aware there's an incident at the Halcyon Grand. The regional team is being notified.""

My father glanced at Marcus.

"Good. I want the security footage preserved immediately. Every camera covering the lobby, reception desk, entrance, and lounge.""

"Understood.""

"I also want the incident report, the employee roster, and the name of whoever authorized the removal of my daughter.""

Marcus's face went pale.

Victoria looked between them.

"Wait. Richard Brooks?""

My father ended the call.

He didn't answer her.

Instead, he took a small step toward Marcus.

"Do you know the ownership structure of this hotel?""

Marcus swallowed.

"Yes, sir.""

"Then tell me.""

Marcus looked down.

"The Halcyon Grand is owned by Brooks Hospitality Group.""

My father nodded.

"And who is the chairman of Brooks Hospitality Group?""

Marcus didn't respond.

My father waited.

Finally, Marcus whispered, "You are, sir.""

Victoria's smile disappeared.

The receptionist slowly raised her head.

The businessman near the fireplace lowered his newspaper.

I stood there holding Grace, trying to process what had just happened.

My father owned the hotel.

Not just one hotel.

Brooks Hospitality Group owned a portfolio of luxury properties across the United States and Europe.

The Halcyon Grand was one of its flagship properties.

I had known this, of course.

But my father had never encouraged me to use his position to get special treatment.

He had raised me to be independent.

I'd attended college, worked in nonprofit administration, and rented my own apartment before Grace was born.

I hadn't told anyone at the hotel who my father was because I hadn't thought it mattered.

And honestly, I hadn't expected to need his help.

Victoria suddenly found her voice.

"That's impossible.""

My father turned toward her.

"Is it?""

She stared at him.

"You're Richard Brooks?""

"Yes.""

Victoria's face changed.

I'd never seen someone lose confidence so quickly.

"Well," she began, adjusting her bracelet.

"I wasn't aware of the connection.""

My father looked at her.

"What connection?""

She forced a laugh.

"I mean, obviously, if I'd known Danielle was your daughter, this misunderstanding could have been avoided.""

My father stared at her.

"You're suggesting you would have behaved differently if my daughter had been someone important?""

Victoria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

I stepped forward.

"Dad, she knew I was holding a baby. She knew exactly what she was doing.""

My father's jaw tightened.

"I know, sweetheart.""

Marcus attempted to regain control.

"Mr. Brooks, I sincerely apologize for the confusion. I was trying to protect the reputation of the hotel.""

My father looked at him.

"You protected the reputation of a woman who assaulted a mother holding her newborn.""

"Sir, I didn't know—"

"You didn't know what?""

Marcus stopped.

My father continued.

"You didn't know she was my daughter? Or you didn't know that striking someone in front of a newborn was unacceptable?""

Marcus lowered his eyes.

Victoria stepped between them.

"Now, Richard, surely we can resolve this privately. I have a long-standing relationship with the hotel.""

My father looked at her.

"Then you should have known better than to assault someone inside it.""

Victoria's lips tightened.

"That is a serious accusation.""

"Then we'll let the footage speak.""

She turned toward Marcus.

"Marcus, tell him I was defending myself.""

Marcus looked trapped.

"I wasn't present when the incident occurred.""

"Then you should have reviewed the footage!""

My father slowly nodded.

"That's the first sensible thing you've said.""

He turned toward Daniel.

"Has security preserved the recordings?""

"Yes, sir. The security supervisor has been contacted.""

"Good. I want copies secured before anyone touches the system.""

Then my father looked at me.

"Let's get you and Grace somewhere comfortable.""

I nodded.

But as he turned, Victoria suddenly spoke.

"Richard, wait.""

He stopped.

She lowered her voice.

"I think you should understand that my family has significant business relationships with several people in your industry.""

My father looked at her.

"And?""

She hesitated.

"My husband sits on the board of a major investment firm. We have friends in important places.""

My father gave her a cold smile.

"Then I suggest you call them.""

Victoria's expression hardened.

"You don't want to make an enemy of my family.""

My father looked at her for a long moment.

Then he said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

"Mrs. Hale, you made yourself my enemy the moment you raised your hand against my child. Everything that happens after this will be a consequence of your own choices.""

He turned away.

But before we could reach the elevators, Marcus's assistant came running from the back office.

She was carrying a tablet.

"Mr. Brooks!""

My father stopped.

"What is it?""

The assistant looked terrified.

"It's about the footage.""

My father held out his hand.

"Show me.""

She opened a video file.

The lobby appeared on the screen.

There was Victoria approaching my chair.

There was the argument.

There was the slap.

And then there was something else.

Something none of us had noticed.

A second camera had captured the reception desk from another angle.

It showed Marcus speaking to Victoria before he came over to us.

The timestamp was clear.

The conversation had taken place several minutes before he approached me.

My father watched without blinking.

Then he turned toward the assistant.

"Can you increase the audio?""

She nodded.

A faint voice emerged from the recording.

Marcus's voice.

May you like

And the words he had spoken before arriving at my chair made my father's expression turn to stone.

"Just get her out before the owner finds out.""
