Amused

Chapter 9: The Daughter No One Was Supposed to Find

I stared at the papers scattered across the floor.

The old hotel.

The hidden vault.

The secrets my mother buried.

The father I thought I lost.

None of it mattered anymore.

Because there was only one sentence repeating in my mind.

Your mother wasn’t your biological mother.

I wanted to reject it.

I wanted to laugh.

I wanted to tell Adrian he was wrong.

But the problem was…

He looked like someone who had spent years carrying the weight of those words.

Not someone who had invented them.

“Say it again.””

My voice sounded different.

Smaller.

“Charlotte…”

“Say it again.””

Adrian looked at me.

“Eleanor wasn’t your biological mother.””

I felt the room tilt.

I grabbed the edge of the desk.

The same desk where my mother had written letters, signed contracts, and built an empire.

The desk where she had hidden the truth about me.

“Then who was?””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Jonathan.

He lowered his eyes.

“You knew.””

He didn’t deny it.

That hurt more than anything.

“You knew.””

“I knew there was a possibility.””

“A possibility?””

My voice rose.

“You knew my entire identity might be a lie, and you said nothing?””

Jonathan looked devastated.

“Your mother made me promise.””

“Everyone made promises.””

I looked around the room.

“My whole life has been controlled by promises other people made.””

Adrian stepped closer.

“Charlotte, listen to me.””

“No.””

I turned toward him.

“I spent my entire life believing I was Eleanor Vale’s daughter.””

“You are her daughter.””

“But not by blood.””

He nodded.

“No.””

The honesty hurt.

But somehow, it also helped.

At least he wasn’t trying to soften it.

“I don’t understand.””

Adrian looked at the documents.

“Your real parents were involved in something dangerous.””

“Who were they?””

He hesitated.

And that hesitation made my heart sink.

“Who?””

Adrian took a breath.

“Your biological mother’s name was Amelia Laurent.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But the reaction from Jonathan did.

He went completely still.

“You know that name.””

Jonathan didn’t answer.

“Jonathan.””

His face changed.

“She was part of the original Solmere investigation.””

“What investigation?””

Adrian looked at him.

“Tell her.””

Jonathan was silent.

Then he finally spoke.

“Before Eleanor expanded Solmere into an international company, there was another family involved.””

“Another family?””

“Yes.””

He walked toward the old files.

“The Laurents.””

I listened carefully.

“Your biological mother, Amelia, came from a family that owned a competing hospitality group. But unlike most competitors, she became close with Eleanor.””

“Why?””

“Because they discovered something together.””

“What?””

Jonathan looked at me.

“A network of people manipulating luxury businesses across the country.””

I frowned.

“That sounds impossible.””

“It did to many people.””

He opened a file.

“Until companies started collapsing. Executives disappeared. Evidence vanished.””

I looked at Adrian.

“And my parents?””

“Your biological parents tried to expose them.””

The room became silent.

“And that’s why they disappeared?””

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

All my life, I had wondered why my father was absent.

Why my mother refused to talk about him.

Why certain questions always ended in silence.

Now I understood.

The silence wasn’t because there was nothing to say.

It was because the truth was dangerous.

“What happened to Amelia?””

Adrian looked down.

“She died when you were very young.””

“And my father?””

Nobody answered.

I already knew.

I looked at Adrian.

“You.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

The pieces connected.

My biological father.

The man I thought abandoned me.

The man who had been hiding.

But not because he didn’t love me.

Because he was trying to keep me alive.

“Then why did Eleanor raise me?””

Adrian’s expression softened.

“Because she loved you.””

I looked away.

“That doesn’t explain everything.””

“No.””

He paused.

“It doesn’t.””

He walked closer.

“After Amelia died, Eleanor made a decision.””

“What decision?””

“She chose to become your mother.””

My eyes burned.

“She could have left me?””

“Yes.””

“And she didn’t.””

“No.””

Adrian smiled sadly.

“She fought for you.””

I looked down at the letter again.

My mother’s handwriting.

My mother’s words.

Even after learning she wasn’t my biological mother, something inside me knew.

She was still my mother.

Because blood wasn’t the only thing that created family.

But there was still one question.

“Why hide this from me?””

Jonathan answered.

“Because someone was searching for you.””

My head lifted.

“Why?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Because your existence threatened everything they built.””

“Why?””

He pointed to the documents.

“Because you weren’t just Amelia Laurent’s daughter.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

He picked up another file.

Inside was a legal agreement.

I read the title.

My eyes widened.

*Laurent Family Trust Agreement.*

I looked at Adrian.

“What is this?””

“Your biological family had ownership rights connected to a large financial network.””

“How large?””

He looked at me.

“Large enough to rival Solmere.””

I stared at the papers.

“So someone didn’t just want Solmere.””

“No.””

Adrian’s voice became quiet.

“They wanted you gone because you are the last person who can legally challenge them.””

The room went silent.

Suddenly, every piece made sense.

The attempts to erase my identity.

The lies.

The warnings.

The obsession with making me look like someone who didn’t belong.

It wasn’t only about the Solmere Empire.

It was about me.

I was the missing piece.

The one person who could expose everything.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

“Hello?””

At first, there was only silence.

Then a voice.

A voice I recognized immediately.

Richard.

“Charlotte.””

My grip tightened.

“How did you get this number?””

He ignored the question.

“You found the vault.””

It wasn’t a question.

I looked at Adrian.

“He knows.””

Jonathan’s expression turned serious.

“Hang up.””

I ignored him.

“Why?””

Richard sighed.

“Because I was hoping you would never discover the truth.””

“You mean the truth you spent years hiding?””

“Charlotte, you don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“You understand anger. Not reality.””

I walked toward the window.

“Then explain reality.””

Silence.

Then Richard said:

“Your mother wasn’t protecting you from me.””

My heart stopped.

“Then who?””

Another pause.

“The person who killed your biological parents.””

The room froze.

I whispered:

“What?””

Richard continued.

“The person who has been controlling everything from the beginning.””

“Who?””

His voice dropped.

And what he said next made everyone in the room go silent.

“Ask Jonathan Pierce.””

I turned slowly.

Jonathan’s face had lost all color.

“No.””

The word came from him.

Not Richard.

Jonathan.

Richard continued through the phone.

“Ask him why he was the last person to see Eleanor alive.””

My eyes locked onto Jonathan.

He looked away.

And suddenly, the man I thought might help me…

became another question.

Richard’s voice continued.

“You’ve been searching for the person who betrayed your family.””

A pause.

“You never considered that he was standing beside you the entire time.””

The call ended.

Nobody spoke.

The vault was silent.

Then I looked at Jonathan.

“Tell me he’s lying.””

Jonathan opened his mouth.

But no words came out.

And that was the moment I knew.

The final secret was not hidden in the vault.

It was standing right in front of me.

The man who helped my mother build everything.

The man who claimed he wanted to protect me.

The man who had known every secret.

Jonathan finally whispered:

“Charlotte…”

His voice cracked.

“I need to tell you what happened the night your mother died.””

I waited.

Because after everything I had learned…

I knew the truth would hurt.

But I also knew I was finally close.

Jonathan looked at me with tears in his eyes.

And said:

“Your mother didn’t die because of Richard.””

May you like

A pause.

“She died because she found out what I had done.””
