Amused

Chapter 5: The Enemy Wearing a Family Name

The darkness swallowed everything.

For one terrifying second, I couldn’t see anything.

Not the desk.

Not the windows.

Not Jonathan.

Only the sound of my own heartbeat filling the room.

The stranger’s footsteps moved closer.

Slow.

Confident.

Like someone who had already decided how this moment would end.

“You should have stayed away.””

The voice came again.

Cold.

Familiar.

And impossible.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it at family dinners.

At birthday celebrations.

At my mother’s funeral.

“Richard?””

The footsteps stopped.

A quiet laugh came from the darkness.

“Still recognizing family before enemies.””

The emergency lights flickered on.

A dim red glow filled the office.

And standing near the doorway was my uncle.

Richard Vale.

The man who had held my shoulder while I cried after my mother’s death.

The man who had told reporters that Eleanor Vale’s legacy would be protected.

The man who had looked me in the eyes and said he would always be there for me.

Now he stood inside my mother’s office after secretly entering during a blackout.

Watching me.

Jonathan appeared beside me.

His face was tense.

“Richard.””

My uncle smiled.

“Jonathan.””

The way they said each other’s names told me everything.

Not surprise.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

They had a history.

I looked between them.

“How long?””

Neither answered.

My voice became sharper.

“How long have you both been hiding things from me?””

Jonathan looked uncomfortable.

Richard, however, looked almost amused.

“Charlotte, you always were more observant than people gave you credit for.””

I stared at him.

“Don’t compliment me.””

His smile faded slightly.

“Excuse me?””

“You don’t get to stand there and pretend this is some family conversation.””

Richard slowly walked into the office.

The red emergency lighting made his face look unfamiliar.

Or maybe I was finally seeing it clearly.

“You’re angry.””

“Yes.””

“That’s understandable.””

“No, it isn’t.””

He stopped.

“Why not?””

“Because you’re acting like this is a disagreement.””

I held up the photograph.

“Someone was watching me.””

His eyes moved to it.

A small reaction.

But enough.

“You knew about this too.””

Richard sighed.

“Charlotte.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“I’m tired of everyone saying my name like they’re trying to calm down a child.””

The room went silent.

For years, I had been the youngest person in every business discussion.

The daughter.

The niece.

The girl who was supposed to learn someday.

But I was done waiting for someday.

Richard looked at Jonathan.

“She found the files.””

Jonathan’s expression tightened.

“Not all of them.””

“Yet.””

Richard looked back at me.

“Your mother always had a talent for making things complicated.””

I felt my anger rise.

“My mother built this company.””

“She built an empire.””

“Yes.””

“And empires attract enemies.””

I stared at him.

“Were you one of them?””

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

That pause hurt more than a confession.

Because I had spent my entire life believing family meant something.

I believed blood created loyalty.

I believed the people closest to you would never be the ones who hurt you.

Richard walked toward the desk.

“You know what your mother’s mistake was?””

I said nothing.

“She thought loyalty could be earned forever.””

He touched the edge of the desk.

“She thought because someone stood beside her for twenty years, they would stand beside her for twenty more.””

His eyes met mine.

“She was wrong.””

The words made my stomach twist.

“You’re talking about yourself.””

“I’m talking about reality.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You’re talking about betrayal.””

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You have your mother’s stubbornness.””

“And you have none of her character.””

The moment the words left my mouth, the room went completely still.

Jonathan looked at me.

Richard stared.

Then he laughed.

Not loudly.

Not angrily.

Almost sadly.

“That’s exactly why you’re dangerous.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“You still believe people are divided into good and bad.””

He stepped closer.

“The world doesn’t work that way.””

“Maybe yours doesn’t.””

His eyes narrowed.

“You think your mother was perfect?””

“No.””

That surprised him.

I continued.

“She made mistakes. She trusted the wrong people. But she never destroyed someone else’s life just to protect her own.””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

For the first time, I saw real anger.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

“Tell me what you sacrificed.””

He looked away.

That was when I knew there was a story.

A reason.

But no reason could erase what he had done.

Jonathan suddenly stepped between us.

“Richard, this needs to stop.””

My uncle looked at him.

“Now you care?””

Jonathan’s face changed.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Richard smiled coldly.

“You spent years pretending you were different from me.””

The words hung in the air.

I looked at Jonathan.

“Pretending?””

Jonathan said nothing.

Richard continued.

“You helped Eleanor build the legal structure. You knew every weakness. Every account. Every protection.””

“Richard.””

“But now you want to act like the hero.””

Jonathan’s voice became firm.

“I tried to protect Charlotte.””

Richard laughed.

“By hiding the truth?””

I turned toward Jonathan.

He looked away.

Again.

Always looking away.

That was when I understood.

There were no innocent people in this room.

Only people who had chosen different sides.

I walked toward the desk.

“Where is the vault?””

Both men froze.

I noticed immediately.

Richard’s expression changed.

Jonathan looked alarmed.

There.

That was the answer.

“The paper said Project Evergreen. Vault.””

I looked at Richard.

“You know what that means.””

He didn’t respond.

“Where is it?””

Richard’s voice became quiet.

“You shouldn’t look for things your mother buried.””

“My mother buried them because she knew someone would try to destroy them.””

He stared at me.

“She buried them because she was afraid.””

“Of you?””

A long silence.

Then Richard said:

“Of what she discovered.””

My heart skipped.

“What did she discover?””

Before he could answer, the office door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A young employee stood there, breathing heavily.

“Mr. Pierce.””

Jonathan looked at him.

“What happened?””

The employee looked nervous.

“There’s a problem downstairs.””

“What kind of problem?””

He swallowed.

“The media is outside.””

Richard frowned.

“Why?””

The employee looked at me.

Then back at Jonathan.

“Someone leaked security footage from the lobby.””

My blood went cold.

“What footage?””

The employee hesitated.

“The video of Miss Vale being dragged across the floor.””

Nobody spoke.

Then he continued.

“And someone sent it to every major news outlet.””

Richard’s expression changed.

Jonathan looked furious.

“Who sent it?””

The employee shook his head.

“We don’t know.””

I stared at them.

For weeks, someone had worked to erase me.

To make me disappear.

But now someone had exposed the humiliation.

Why?

Who would release a video that could damage the company?

Unless…

I looked at Richard.

“This wasn’t an accident.””

Nobody answered.

Because they knew.

The timing was too perfect.

Someone wanted the world watching.

Someone wanted questions asked.

Jonathan stepped closer.

“Charlotte, you need to leave.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because this situation is escalating.””

“Exactly.””

I picked up the photograph.

“Which means I’m finally getting close.””

Richard moved toward the door.

“Charlotte.””

I looked at him.

For the first time in my life, I didn’t see my uncle.

I saw a stranger wearing my family’s name.

“If you keep digging,” he said quietly, “you may find out your mother wasn’t the only person who lied to you.””

I held his gaze.

“Good.””

His expression changed.

“Good?””

“Yes.””

I walked past him.

“Because I’m done living with other people’s secrets.””

As I stepped into the hallway, my phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One message.

I opened it.

And my blood ran cold.

It was a photograph.

A recent photograph.

Taken inside the Solmere Hotel.

Of me.

Standing in my mother’s office.

May you like

The message underneath contained only one sentence:

*“You found the door. Now find out who has the key.””*
