Amused

Chapter 8: The Father Who Was Erased

I wanted to believe it was impossible.

I wanted to believe grief had finally broken something inside my mind.

Because the man standing in front of me couldn’t be real.

My father had been a question mark my entire life.

A name that was never spoken.

A photograph that never existed.

A story my mother always changed before it reached the ending.

And now he was standing in front of me inside a hidden vault beneath an abandoned hotel.

Older.

Different.

But unmistakably familiar.

His eyes were the same ones I had seen every morning when I looked in the mirror.

“Charlotte.””

The way he said my name almost destroyed me.

Not because it sounded like a stranger saying it.

Because it sounded like someone who had been waiting years to say it again.

I stepped back.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

My father’s expression changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“I understand.””

“No, you don’t.””

I looked at Jonathan.

Then back at the man.

“You’re telling me my father, who supposedly disappeared before I was old enough to remember him, has been alive this entire time?””

He swallowed.

“Yes.””

“And my mother knew?””

“Yes.””

“And she lied to me?””

His face fell.

“She protected you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice echoed through the vault.

Protected.

That word had become an excuse.

Every secret.

Every lie.

Every decision made without me.

Everyone claimed they were protecting me.

But nobody asked what I wanted.

My father lowered his eyes.

“I deserve your anger.””

“You deserve more than that.””

He nodded slowly.

“I know.””

Jonathan stepped forward.

“Charlotte, you need to hear the full story.””

I turned toward him.

“Do I?””

His expression tightened.

“You do.””

“Because everyone keeps giving me pieces.””

I held up the birth certificate.

“My mother hid my father.””

I pointed toward him.

“He disappeared.””

Then I looked at Jonathan.

“You knew.””

Nobody spoke.

“I’m standing in a room full of people who knew my entire life was built on a lie.””

My father took a step forward.

“Charlotte—”

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

The pain in his face was obvious.

But I couldn’t let myself soften.

Not yet.

Because if I did, I was afraid I would break.

“My whole life, I thought you left.””

His eyes closed.

“I know.””

“I thought maybe I wasn’t important enough.””

That sentence hit harder than I expected.

The room became completely silent.

My father looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something worse than guilt.

Regret.

“You were the most important thing in my life.””

“Then why weren’t you there?””

He had no answer.

That was the only answer that mattered.

I turned away.

Jonathan spoke quietly.

“Charlotte, there’s something you need to understand.””

I looked at him.

“This better be good.””

He nodded.

“Your father didn’t abandon you.””

“Then what happened?””

Adrian — my father — looked at the floor.

“I found out someone inside Solmere was stealing from the company.””

I crossed my arms.

“Richard.””

“Yes.””

“Everyone keeps saying his name.””

Adrian nodded.

“Because he was part of it.””

“How?””

He walked slowly toward one of the shelves.

“Your grandfather left the company with a strict structure. No single person could control everything. Your mother continued that tradition.””

He touched an old folder.

“She believed power should be divided.””

“And Richard wanted all of it.””

“Yes.””

I looked at the documents.

“So he tried to take control.””

“Not just control.””

Adrian’s voice became heavier.

“He wanted ownership.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

Jonathan answered.

“He discovered a legal weakness in the company structure.””

I looked at him.

“What weakness?””

“Your mother inherited control after your grandfather died. But there was one condition.””

I waited.

“Your father had equal ownership rights.””

I stared at Adrian.

“What?””

He nodded.

“Your grandfather created the agreement before I married your mother.””

I looked back at the documents.

“So Richard couldn’t take everything while you were alive.””

“Correct.””

“And after you disappeared?””

Adrian’s expression darkened.

“He believed I was dead.””

Silence.

Then everything connected.

Richard wasn’t just trying to control the company.

He needed the other owner gone.

My father’s disappearance.

My mother’s fear.

The hidden files.

The warnings.

It was all connected.

“Why didn’t you come back?””

Adrian looked at me.

The question seemed to hurt him.

“Because I couldn’t.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It’s the truth.””

He took a breath.

“After I discovered what Richard was doing, I confronted him.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?””

“He threatened me.””

“With what?””

“With you.””

The room went cold.

“He told me if I went to the authorities, if I exposed him, he would make sure you disappeared too.””

I stared at him.

“He threatened a child?””

Adrian’s face broke.

“He was willing to do anything.””

“And my mother?””

“She wanted to fight.””

A small smile appeared on his face.

“Your mother was never afraid of anyone.””

I almost smiled.

Because that was true.

“She wanted me to stay hidden until she could gather enough evidence.””

“But she died.””

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.””

The words remained between us.

“She never got the chance.””

I looked away.

For years, I thought my mother had left me.

Now I was discovering she had been fighting for me until the end.

My anger was still there.

But it was changing.

Becoming something heavier.

A sadness I didn’t know what to do with.

Then I noticed something.

One file sitting separately from the others.

No label.

No date.

Just my name.

I picked it up.

Charlotte Vale.

My fingers went cold.

“What is this?””

Neither man answered.

That worried me.

I opened it.

Inside was a collection of documents.

Medical records.

Legal papers.

And one letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

Not addressed to me.

To someone else.

I read the first line.

*Adrian, if you are reading this, it means I failed to keep Charlotte away from the truth.*

I looked at my father.

He looked shocked.

I continued.

*But she deserves to know everything.*

My eyes moved down.

*The greatest danger to Charlotte is not Richard.*

I stopped.

Jonathan stepped closer.

“What does it say?””

I didn’t answer.

Because the next sentence made my entire body freeze.

*The person who started this was someone we never suspected.*

I kept reading.

*Someone inside our own family.*

The room went silent.

Richard.

That was what we all assumed.

But my mother had written this after everything happened.

She knew something we didn’t.

I turned the page.

There was a final note.

Only one sentence.

*Adrian, if Charlotte finds this file, tell her the truth about her birth.*

My heartbeat increased.

My birth?

I looked at the medical records.

Then I saw it.

A document with a hospital logo.

A different hospital.

A different date.

My hands began to shake.

“This…”

My father stepped closer.

“Charlotte.””

I looked up.

“What is this?””

His face was full of pain.

“Something your mother never wanted you to find out this way.””

I looked down at the paper.

The words blurred.

Because they changed everything.

The child I thought I was…

The family I thought I belonged to…

The identity I had carried my entire life…

All of it was suddenly uncertain.

I looked at Adrian.

“Tell me.””

He closed his eyes.

“Charlotte…”

“Tell me.””

A long silence passed.

Then he finally spoke.

And the truth was worse than any betrayal I had uncovered before.

“Your mother wasn’t your biological mother.””

The vault went silent.

I couldn’t hear anything.

Not the lights.

Not the air.

Not my own breathing.

Nothing.

My father continued.

“She raised you because she loved you.””

My fingers loosened.

The papers fell.

“Then who am I?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Adrian looked at the file.

At the name written inside.

And whispered:

“Charlotte…”

May you like

His voice broke.

“Your real identity is the reason someone tried to destroy the Solmere Empire.””
