Chapter 7: The Grandfather's Terrible Confession
"Richard Williams, you're under arrest for conspiracy, fraud, and evidence tampering.""
The officer's voice echoed through the study.
Amara sat frozen in her wheelchair.
Two uniformed officers entered, followed by a detective carrying a thick folder. Behind them stood Vanessa and Christopher Carter.
Vanessa looked remarkably calm.
In fact, she was smiling.
"Well," she said, removing her gloves, "I suppose the truth finally has a way of coming out.""
Richard turned toward her.
"You're enjoying this?""
Vanessa shrugged.
"After everything you've put me through, I think I've earned a little satisfaction.""
Christopher stood beside her, his hands in the pockets of his expensive overcoat.
"Let's not make this more complicated than necessary," he said.
"The officers are simply doing their jobs.""
Richard looked at him with disgust.
"You arrogant little parasite.""
"Careful," Christopher replied.
"Those words could become part of your statement.""
Amara wheeled herself between them.
"Stop.""
Everyone turned.
She looked at the detective.
"May I ask why my grandfather is being arrested?""
The detective checked his folder.
"Mr. Williams is suspected of interfering with a criminal investigation involving the accident that left you permanently disabled. We also have evidence of unauthorized financial transfers and the destruction of relevant records.""
Amara felt her stomach tighten.
"Evidence of what destruction?""
The detective glanced toward Richard.
"Several original documents disappeared from a private archive belonging to your father. We have reason to believe Mr. Williams removed them.""
Richard didn't deny it.
Amara turned toward him.
"Grandpa?""
He looked at her.
"I'll explain everything.""
"Now.""
Richard lowered his head.
"Yes, sweetheart. Now.""
Vanessa laughed.
"Don't bother. He's been lying to you for years.""
Richard suddenly turned toward her.
"At least I never tried to kill a member of this family.""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Christopher stepped forward.
"Detective, perhaps you should take him away before he makes another accusation.""
The officer reached for Richard's arm.
Amara raised her hand.
"Wait.""
The detective paused.
"My grandfather has a medical condition. Can he have a moment to collect his medication?""
The detective nodded.
"Five minutes.""
Richard looked at her gratefully.
But Amara wasn't finished.
"And I want the officers to know that I have an original recording connected to the accident. It was given to me by Dr. Samuel Reed.""
Christopher's expression changed.
Only for a second.
But she saw it.
"An original recording?"" he repeated.
Amara turned toward him.
"Yes.""
Christopher forced a smile.
"Interesting. I thought Dr. Reed had lost everything.""
"What do you mean?""
"Nothing.""
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
"Amara, darling, you're being manipulated. Give the recording to the police and let the professionals handle this.""
Amara looked at her.
"You don't get to call me darling anymore.""
Vanessa's face tightened.
The detective approached.
"Ms. Williams, do you have the recording with you?""
Amara placed a hand over her handbag.
"Yes.""
"May I see it?""
Before she could answer, Richard spoke.
"Not until you understand what you're holding.""
The detective frowned.
"Mr. Williams, you're not in a position to give instructions.""
Richard nodded.
"You're right. But I am in a position to tell you that the recording contains evidence involving a murder conspiracy.""
The room went silent.
Amara stared at him.
"A murder conspiracy?""
Richard looked at her.
"Your father didn't die of natural causes.""
Amara stopped breathing.
"What?""
Vanessa suddenly looked toward Christopher.
And Christopher's calm expression vanished.
Richard continued.
"James Williams was poisoned.""
The officers eventually escorted Richard downstairs.
He wasn't handcuffed immediately, but two detectives remained close to him.
Amara insisted on accompanying him to the police station.
Vanessa and Christopher were allowed to leave after agreeing to answer additional questions.
As Christopher passed Amara, he stopped.
"You should be careful about what you believe.""
She looked up.
"Is that a threat?""
He smiled faintly.
"It's advice.""
"Then here's some advice for you. Stay away from my family.""
Christopher leaned closer.
"Your family is exactly why you're in this position.""
He walked away.
Amara watched him enter the elevator.
Then she looked toward Vanessa.
Her stepgrandmother had stopped near the reception desk.
For the first time, she seemed uncertain.
"Vanessa.""
The older woman turned.
"Yes?""
"Did you know my father was poisoned?""
Vanessa's face became expressionless.
"Your father was a sick man.""
"That's not an answer.""
"Some people refuse to accept that death is sometimes unavoidable.""
Amara stared at her.
Then Vanessa added quietly:
"Be careful, Amara. You might discover things about your father that you won't like.""
She walked away.
At the police station, Richard was taken into a private interview room.
Amara waited outside with Margaret.
Her phone vibrated repeatedly.
News alerts appeared one after another.
*BILLIONAIRE RICHARD WILLIAMS ARRESTED IN FAMILY FRAUD INVESTIGATION.*
*WILLIAMS FAMILY EMPIRE FACES UNCERTAINTY.*
*DISABLED HEIRESS CAUGHT IN MULTIMILLION-DOLLAR SCANDAL.*
Amara switched off her phone.
Margaret placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Your grandfather loves you.""
Amara looked at her.
"Then why didn't he tell me the truth?""
Margaret hesitated.
"Because he was afraid.""
"Of what?""
"Of losing you.""
Amara frowned.
Margaret continued.
"Three years ago, after your accident, Mr. Williams spent weeks trying to find out what happened. He hired investigators, contacted doctors, and personally visited the garage where your car had been serviced.""
"Why didn't he tell me?""
"Because he discovered that your brother was involved.""
Amara looked down.
"Then he should have told me.""
"Perhaps. But he also discovered that someone was watching you.""
Margaret lowered her voice.
"Your grandfather believed that if the people responsible knew he had discovered the truth, they might try again.""
Amara's chest tightened.
"Was that why he kept everything secret?""
Margaret nodded.
"Partly.""
Before Amara could ask anything else, the interview room door opened.
A detective approached.
"Ms. Williams, your grandfather is ready to speak with you.""
Richard sat alone at a metal table.
He looked exhausted.
His expensive jacket was folded over the back of the chair, and his silver hair was slightly disheveled.
When Amara entered, he stood.
"Sweetheart.""
She remained near the door.
"Sit down, Grandpa.""
He obeyed.
For several seconds, they simply looked at each other.
Then Amara placed the USB drive on the table.
"Tell me everything.""
Richard nodded.
"Your father discovered that Vanessa had been secretly transferring money from the family accounts. He confronted her shortly before he died.""
"Did she poison him?""
Richard looked away.
"I don't know.""
"Grandpa.""
"I suspected her. But I couldn't prove it.""
"Then why were you arrested?""
"Because I removed certain documents from the family archive.""
"Why?""
"To protect the original evidence.""
Amara shook her head.
"That's not how you protect evidence.""
"I know.""
He leaned forward.
"Three years ago, when you were injured, I discovered that Ethan had paid the mechanic. I also found evidence connecting Christopher to the arrangement.""
"Why didn't you tell the police?""
"I did.""
Amara frowned.
"What?""
"I gave them the information. But someone inside the department leaked it. The mechanic disappeared, and the investigation stalled.""
"Then why not go to another department?""
Richard looked at her sadly.
"Because I discovered that the leak came from someone with access to the original investigation.""
Amara felt a chill.
"Who?""
Richard shook his head.
"I never identified them.""
He looked down at the USB drive.
"But there was something else.""
"What?""
"Your father left a second recording.""
Amara leaned forward.
"Where?""
"In a safety deposit box.""
"Whose?""
"Yours.""
She stared at him.
"Mine?""
Richard nodded.
"Your father arranged for it to be transferred into your name. I discovered its existence shortly after your accident.""
"Then why didn't you give it to me?""
"Because the box had already been accessed.""
Amara's heart began pounding.
"By whom?""
Richard looked directly at her.
"Your mother.""
Amara froze.
Her biological mother, Elizabeth, had died when she was eleven.
Vanessa was her stepgrandmother.
But Richard's words made her realize he was referring to someone else.
"Which mother?""
Richard took a breath.
"Your father's first wife.""
Amara stared at him.
"My mother is dead.""
"Yes.""
"Then how could she have accessed it?""
Richard closed his eyes.
"Because Elizabeth didn't die when we were told she did.""
The room seemed to disappear.
Amara gripped the edge of the table.
"What are you saying?""
Richard's voice broke.
"Your mother survived the car accident that everyone believed killed her. But she disappeared shortly afterward.""
Amara shook her head.
"No.""
"Your father searched for her for years.""
"No, Grandpa.""
"I found a letter from her last month.""
Amara's eyes filled.
"Where is she?""
Richard looked toward the window.
"I don't know.""
Then he added:
"But I believe she's alive.""
An hour later, the detective returned.
"Mr. Williams, we have confirmation that your financial records were accessed without authorization. The prosecution has agreed to postpone formal charges while we review the new evidence.""
Richard stood.
"Am I free to leave?""
"For now.""
Amara helped him gather his belongings.
As they approached the exit, a young officer hurried toward them.
"Mr. Williams?""
Richard turned.
"Yes?""
"We found something in your private vehicle.""
"What?""
The officer handed him a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was a small silver key.
Amara recognized it immediately.
It belonged to the safety deposit box Richard had mentioned.
But there was something else.
A folded note.
Richard opened it.
His face went white.
The message contained only one sentence.
*SHE KNOWS YOU FOUND THE BOX. DON'T LET AMARA GO HOME.*
Amara looked up.
"Who sent that?""
Richard folded the note.
"I don't know.""
Then his phone rang.
The screen displayed a name that made him stagger.
*ELIZABETH WILLIAMS.*
Amara stared at the screen.
Her mother's name.
Richard slowly answered.
A woman's voice came through.
"Richard?""
He closed his eyes.
"Elizabeth?""
There was a pause.
Then the woman whispered:
"Please tell Amara I'm sorry.""
Amara leaned toward the phone.
"Mom?""
The voice began crying.
"My baby.""
Amara covered her mouth.
"Where are you?""
"I can't tell you.""
"Why?""
"Because Vanessa knows I'm alive.""
Richard's face hardened.
The woman continued.
"And she knows where the safety deposit box is.""
The call suddenly became distorted.
Then came a sound.
A door opening.
A man's voice.
"Who are you talking to?""
Elizabeth gasped.
"Richard, listen to me! The person who arranged Amara's accident wasn't Ethan or Vanessa.""
A crash sounded.
Then the call ended.
Amara stared at the phone.
Richard slowly lowered it.
May you like
And for the first time in three years, he whispered the name of the person he feared most.
"James Williams.""
