Chapter 4: The Brother Who Came Back From London

Amara stared at the photograph until the faces began to blur.

Her younger brother, Ethan, stood beside the mechanic outside the garage. He was wearing a dark coat, his hands buried in his pockets, and his expression was unmistakably serious.

There was no confusion.

No mistaken identity.

It was Ethan.

The same brother who had held her hand in the hospital and promised that nobody would ever hurt her again.

"Grandpa," Amara whispered, "I need to hear him say it himself.""

Richard nodded.

"Of course.""

He turned toward the detective on the phone.

"Detective, can you arrange a meeting with the mechanic?""

"He's willing to speak, Mr. Williams. But he's frightened. He believes the people who hired him know where his family lives.""

"Tell him I'll arrange protection.""

The detective paused.

"There's another complication. Your grandson has already been contacted.""

Amara looked up sharply.

"Ethan knows?""

"Yes, ma'am. Someone warned him that we're reopening the investigation.""

Richard's jaw tightened.

"Who contacted him?""

"We're trying to establish that.""

The call ended.

For several seconds, the room remained silent.

Then Amara turned toward her grandfather.

"How long have you suspected Ethan?""

Richard looked uncomfortable.

"Three weeks.""

"Three weeks?""

"I didn't want to tell you until I had something substantial.""

"You knew my brother might have been involved in my accident, and you let me sit across from him at Thanksgiving?""

Richard lowered his eyes.

"He didn't attend Thanksgiving.""

Amara stopped.

She remembered.

Ethan had called that morning, claiming his flight had been delayed. He had promised to visit the following week.

He never came.

"Did he know about the inheritance?"" she asked.

"Yes.""

"Did he know Vanessa controlled the trust?""

Richard nodded.

"Your father discussed the arrangement with both children before he died.""

Amara looked away.

For years, she had believed Ethan was the one person in the family who understood what she had lost.

He had visited her rehabilitation center.

He had brought her favorite coffee.

He had sat beside her during painful physical therapy sessions.

Once, when she cried because she couldn't button her own blouse, he had quietly helped her without making her feel embarrassed.

She remembered telling him, "I don't know how to live like this.""

He had answered, "You don't have to figure it out alone. I'm your brother.""

Now those memories felt contaminated.

Richard reached for her hand.

"Amara, listen to me. Whatever happened, you are not responsible for it.""

She swallowed.

"I know.""

But her voice sounded unconvinced.

At 10:40 that night, Richard received another call.

This time, the caller was Ethan.

Richard answered immediately.

"Where are you?""

A familiar voice came through the speaker.

"Hello to you too, Grandfather.""

Amara's stomach tightened.

She moved closer.

"Ethan?""

There was a pause.

"Amara?""

His voice softened.

"Is that really you?""

She closed her eyes.

"Yes.""

"I heard about tonight. Are you okay?""

The question nearly broke her.

Three years earlier, that same voice had comforted her through countless nights.

Now she didn't know whether she was speaking to her brother or to the man who had helped destroy her life.

"Where are you, Ethan?""

"At home.""

"Which home?""

Another pause.

"Chicago.""

Richard leaned toward the phone.

"You told everyone you were in London.""

"I was.""

"You were photographed outside a garage here two days before Amara's accident.""

Silence.

Then Ethan laughed nervously.

"That's what this is about?""

"Answer the question.""

"Grandfather, I don't know what you're talking about.""

Amara leaned forward.

"Ethan, I saw the photograph.""

His voice changed.

"Amara, listen to me. You have to be careful about what Grandpa tells you.""

"Why?""

"He's been suspicious of everyone since Grandma died.""

Richard's face hardened.

"Don't use your grandmother's name to avoid answering.""

Ethan sighed.

"Look, I'll come over tomorrow. We can talk like a family.""

"No," Amara said.

Her brother fell silent.

"We'll talk tonight.""

"Amara, you're upset.""

"You're right. I'm upset. I'm also tired of people deciding what I can handle.""

Richard watched her quietly.

Ethan finally spoke.

"Fine. I'll be there in thirty minutes.""

The call ended.

Richard immediately instructed Margaret to contact the security team.

But before anyone could move, Amara noticed something.

A text message had appeared on Richard's phone.

It was from an unknown number.

Stop asking questions about the accident. Your granddaughter is already in danger.

Richard read it twice.

Then he looked at Amara.

She had seen the message.

"Grandpa, what does that mean?""

Richard slipped the phone into his pocket.

"It means someone is becoming desperate.""

Ethan arrived at 11:18.

He entered through the private entrance wearing a navy overcoat and carrying a small leather bag.

At thirty-one, he looked almost exactly as Amara remembered him. Same dark hair. Same familiar smile. Same small scar near his left eyebrow from when they had fallen off their bicycles as children.

He stopped when he saw her.

"Amara.""

For a moment, neither moved.

Then he approached and bent down to kiss her forehead.

She instinctively leaned away.

His expression faltered.

"What's wrong?""

"Don't.""

He straightened.

Richard stood beside the fireplace.

"Sit down, Ethan.""

Ethan glanced at him.

"Grandfather, I'd prefer to speak with my sister privately.""

"No.""

"Why not?""

"Because I don't trust you.""

Ethan gave a bitter laugh.

"Wonderful. Three years of silence, and now I'm suddenly the criminal.""

Amara watched him carefully.

"Did you arrange the service on my car?""

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But she noticed.

"What?""

"The mechanic. Did you pay him?""

Ethan removed his coat.

"Where did you get that idea?""

"Answer me.""

He looked toward Richard.

"You're letting him manipulate you.""

Amara's voice trembled.

"Please, Ethan. Just tell me.""

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he sat down.

"I paid the mechanic.""

Amara felt her stomach drop.

Richard's hand tightened around his cane.

Ethan continued quickly.

"But I didn't know what he was going to do.""

Amara stared at him.

"What did you ask him to do?""

"Check your brakes.""

"Why?""

"Because I thought you were driving recklessly.""

She shook her head.

"I had never had an accident before.""

"You were distracted. You were arguing with Vanessa about the trust.""

"I wasn't arguing with Vanessa.""

"You were asking questions about Dad's estate.""

Amara stared at him.

"So you arranged for someone to tamper with my car?""

"No!""

Ethan stood abruptly.

"I asked him to scare you. That's all.""

The room became deathly quiet.

Amara felt as though someone had struck her.

"Scare me?""

Ethan ran a hand through his hair.

"I wanted you to stop interfering with the inheritance.""

"By making my brakes fail?""

"I didn't know he'd go that far!""

Richard stepped forward.

"You paid a mechanic to sabotage your sister's vehicle?""

Ethan turned toward him.

"You don't understand!""

"Then explain.""

Ethan's voice rose.

"Vanessa promised me that if Amara became permanently incapacitated, the trust would be transferred to her administration. I was supposed to receive my share afterward.""

Amara stared at him.

"How much?""

Ethan swallowed.

"Eight million.""

She almost couldn't speak.

"You risked my life for eight million dollars?""

"I was in debt!""

"That doesn't answer my question.""

"I had people threatening me. I made a mistake.""

"A mistake?""

Amara looked down at her legs.

She could remember the hospital room.

The doctors explaining the damage.

The first time she tried to move her feet and nothing happened.

The nights she had cried into her pillow because she couldn't imagine anyone loving her again.

Then she looked at Ethan.

"You watched me learn how to live in this chair.""

His eyes filled.

"I know.""

"You held my hand when I couldn't stand up.""

"I know.""

"You told me you would always protect me.""

Ethan lowered his head.

"I'm sorry.""

Amara's voice became barely audible.

"You were the reason I needed protecting.""

Ethan began crying.

Richard turned toward the door.

"Security.""

Two guards entered.

Ethan looked up.

"Grandfather, wait!""

Richard's face remained cold.

"You're going to answer every question the investigators ask.""

"Please.""

"You will not approach Amara again without her permission.""

Ethan looked toward his sister.

"Amara, say something.""

She stared at him for a long moment.

Then she spoke.

"I want to know whether you ever loved me.""

Ethan opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, his phone began ringing.

The screen displayed a name.

*VANESSA.*

Richard held out his hand.

"Answer it.""

Ethan hesitated.

"Now.""

He answered.

Vanessa's voice came through immediately.

"Did you get the money?""

Ethan closed his eyes.

"Mom, not now.""

"Did you get it? We need to leave tonight.""

Richard looked at Amara.

And Amara suddenly understood something.

Vanessa hadn't been acting alone.

May you like

She was still coordinating with someone.

And whoever that person was, they were preparing to disappear.
