Amused

Chapter 8: The Voice That Changed Everything

My fifteenth birthday arrived beneath a gray November sky.

Grandma Evelyn woke me at seven in the morning.

She had made pancakes, scrambled eggs, and hot chocolate.

On the kitchen table sat a small white gift box tied with a blue ribbon.

I stared at it.

"What's that?""

"Your birthday present.""

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a silver necklace with a tiny star pendant.

My throat tightened.

"Grandma...""

She smiled.

"Your father called you his little star. I thought you should have something to remember that.""

I put the necklace around my neck.

Then I hugged her.

For a few minutes, I allowed myself to feel like an ordinary fifteen-year-old girl.

But the feeling disappeared when Michael called.

"The bank is ready," he said.

"Thomas has arranged the release meeting for ten o'clock.""

Grandma glanced at the clock.

"We'll be there.""

Before we left, I checked my phone.

There was a message from Brianna.

*Happy birthday, Bella. I'm sorry about everything.*

I stared at it.

I didn't know what to say.

So I wrote:

*Thank you.*

It wasn't forgiveness.

But it was a beginning.

At 9:45, we arrived at the bank.

Thomas was waiting in the private conference room.

Beside him sat a woman from the compliance department and Michael Harris.

A small digital recorder rested in the middle of the table.

I looked at it.

"Is that it?""

Thomas nodded.

"Your father's original recording has been preserved. We have verified the file and its metadata. Nobody has altered it.""

I sat down.

My grandmother held my hand.

Thomas explained that the recording would be played in its entirety and preserved as evidence.

Then he pressed a button.

A faint crackling sound filled the room.

There was background noise.

A machine beeping.

Someone moving a chair.

Then I heard my father's voice.

"Is this working?""

I covered my mouth.

It was him.

His voice was weaker than I remembered, but it was unmistakably his.

Thomas adjusted the volume.

My father continued.

"My name is Daniel Reyes. I'm making this recording because I don't know how much time I have left, and there are things I need my daughter to understand.""

My eyes filled.

"Isabella, mi pequeña estrella, if you're listening to this, I want you to know something first.""

He paused.

"I love you.""

I began crying.

Grandma Evelyn squeezed my hand.

My father continued.

"I wanted to be there for your quinceañera. I wanted to see you dance with your family. I wanted to embarrass you by dancing badly, just like I promised.""

A weak laugh came through the recording.

Then his voice became serious.

"I have established a trust for you. It is yours. Not your mother's.

Not Robert's. Not anyone else's.""

I looked at Michael.

He was watching the screen carefully.

My father continued.

"Linda has been under pressure from Robert to release funds from the trust. I have refused. The money was earned through years of work, and I want it to give Isabella choices when she grows up.""

A pause.

Then:

"Robert has told me that he intends to use the money for his property business. He says he will repay it. I do not believe him.""

Grandma Evelyn's eyes widened.

The recording continued.

"Linda has signed a preliminary document. I confronted her about it. She told me she thought it was temporary.""

My mother's name made my stomach tighten.

Then I heard my father sigh.

"I believe Linda is afraid of losing her marriage. I don't think she fully understands what Robert is doing. But fear is not permission to take from our daughter.""

I pressed my fingers against my lips.

My father was speaking about my mother.

He knew.

He had known.

Then came a sound I recognized.

A door opening.

A man's voice.

Robert.

"Daniel, we need to settle this.""

My entire body went rigid.

The recording continued.

My father answered.

"There's nothing to settle. The trust belongs to Bella.""

Robert sounded irritated.

"You're making this personal.""

"It is personal. She's my daughter.""

"Linda needs the money.""

"Then you should provide for your household without touching hers.""

Robert laughed.

"You're dying, Daniel. You need to stop pretending you're going to control everything from a hospital bed.""

I felt Grandma's hand tighten around mine.

My father didn't respond immediately.

Then he said something that made my eyes fill again.

"I may not be here when Isabella turns fifteen. But I'll make sure you can't use my death to steal her future.""

Silence.

Robert's voice returned.

"How?""

My father answered calmly.

"Everything is documented. Every conversation. Every transfer. Every request.""

Robert laughed again.

"Nobody is going to believe a dying man over his own wife.""

Then my father's voice became firm.

"They won't have to believe me. They'll have the evidence.""

The recording continued for several more minutes.

Robert admitted that he had already contacted a lender about using the trust as collateral.

He claimed the investment would make enough money to repay everything.

My father refused.

Then Robert said something that made the entire room go silent.

"You're going to regret choosing a bank account over your wife.""

My father's response was immediate.

"No. I'm choosing my daughter over your greed.""

The recording ended with the sound of a door closing.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

I was crying so hard that I couldn't see the table.

Grandma Evelyn pulled me against her.

"Oh, Daniel," she whispered.

Thomas paused the recording.

Michael slowly removed his glasses.

"That is significant evidence.""

I wiped my cheeks.

"Can I hear the rest?""

Thomas looked at me.

"That was the complete file.""

I shook my head.

"No. I mean, is there another recording?""

Michael exchanged a glance with Thomas.

"There is an additional voice memo stored in the same archive. It was not part of the original forty-minute recording.""

My heart began pounding again.

"What's in it?""

Thomas opened the file.

"It appears to have been recorded separately, approximately one week later.""

I stared at the screen.

My father had left another message.

The recording began with a soft rustling sound.

Then my father's voice returned.

"Bella, if you've reached this point, I need you to know that I did everything I could to protect you.""

I closed my eyes.

He paused.

"There is one thing I haven't told anyone except Evelyn.""

Grandma Evelyn sat up.

My father continued.

"The trust contains a second asset. It is not included in the account balance you were given.""

Thomas looked at the screen.

Michael leaned forward.

My father's voice continued.

"I purchased a small commercial property years ago and placed it in a separate holding arrangement for Isabella. It has been maintained independently of the trust.""

Grandma Evelyn gasped.

My father continued.

"Robert doesn't know the full details. He believes the property belongs to my estate, but it was transferred to Isabella's protected ownership before my death.""

I looked at Thomas.

"Another property?""

He nodded slowly.

"Your father appears to be referring to a separate asset.""

My father continued.

"I wanted Bella to have something that could never be taken away by a business partner, a spouse, or anyone who thought they had a right to her future.""

Then his voice softened.

"Isabella, if you ever feel alone, remember that you are not responsible for fixing the mistakes of adults. You don't have to earn love. You don't have to buy your place in a family. You are already enough.""

I began sobbing.

Grandma Evelyn wrapped both arms around me.

My father spoke one final time.

"Happy fifteenth birthday, my little star. I hope you're wearing blue.""

The recording ended.

I looked down at my necklace.

The silver star caught the light.

For the first time since he died, I felt that my father had been able to celebrate my birthday with me.

But Michael was still examining the property documents.

"Thomas, can you verify the ownership of the commercial building?""

Thomas opened another file.

His expression changed.

"Yes.""

He turned the screen toward us.

The property was located on the west side of San Antonio.

It had been purchased by Daniel Reyes eight years earlier.

Its estimated current value was approximately $510,000.

And the registered owner was:

*Isabella Marie Reyes.*

I stared at my name.

Half a million dollars.

A property my father had secretly protected for me.

But there was another entry.

A recent lien request had been submitted against the property.

The applicant was Whitaker Property Holdings.

Michael's face hardened.

"Robert attempted to use this property as collateral too.""

Grandma Evelyn stood.

"Can he?""

Thomas shook his head.

"Not without the beneficiary's authorized consent and the required legal verification.""

I looked at the document.

A second signature appeared beneath the request.

Linda Reyes.

My mother had signed again.

But this time, something was different.

The signature had been witnessed by someone else.

A person named Patricia Cole.

Michael closed the file.

"Now we have a clear pattern.""

Then Thomas received an urgent notification.

He read it.

His face changed.

"What happened?"" I asked.

He looked at Michael.

"Robert Whitaker has just attempted to sell the commercial property.""

My heart stopped.

"Can he do that?""

"No," Thomas replied.

"But someone has already signed a preliminary purchase agreement.""

Michael stood.

"Who?""

Thomas looked at the screen.

Then he said:

"Linda Reyes.""

I stared at the name.

My mother hadn't just helped Robert take the trust money.

May you like

She had attempted to sell the property my father had secretly left me.

And the buyer was scheduled to complete the transaction in forty-eight hours.
