Chapter 7: The Woman Who Tried to Steal My Father's Voice
Michael Harris stared at the computer screen for several seconds without speaking.
The authorization request carried my father's name, his signature, and a date that supposedly placed the document three days before his death.
But my father had been unconscious in the hospital at that time.
I knew because I had been there.
I remembered sitting beside his bed, drawing little stars on the back of his hand with a purple marker. I remembered the nurse gently asking me to stop when he needed another IV.
He hadn't been able to hold a pen.
He certainly hadn't been able to authorize anyone to access a recording.
"Who submitted this?"" Grandma Evelyn asked.
Michael scrolled through the electronic record.
"Patricia Cole.""
"The attorney who came to our house?""
"Yes.""
"Can she access the recording?""
"Not without verification. But she appears to have submitted documents claiming she has authority to act on behalf of the estate.""
I leaned forward.
"Why would she do that?""
Michael turned toward me.
"Because someone wants to hear that recording before you do.""
He immediately called Thomas Bennett at the bank.
While they spoke, Grandma Evelyn placed her hand over mine.
"Your father was very careful, Bella. Don't forget that.""
I nodded, although my stomach was twisting.
A few minutes later, Michael ended the call.
"The bank has frozen the access request. No recording has been released.""
I exhaled.
"Thank goodness.""
"But there's a complication," he continued.
"Patricia claims she received the authorization directly from Robert.""
Grandma Evelyn frowned.
"Then Robert must have given her the forged document.""
"That's what we need to establish.""
Michael picked up his phone again.
"I'm requesting a formal investigation and a review of every person who has accessed the trust records.""
He looked at me.
"Isabella, from this point forward, nobody gets to speak to you about your inheritance without me or another independent representative present.""
I nodded.
For the first time, an adult was telling me that I didn't have to defend myself alone.
But the situation was about to become much worse.
At 6:30 that evening, my mother arrived at Grandma's house.
She came alone.
Her hair was untidy, her eyes were swollen, and she was still wearing the same blouse from the previous day.
Grandma opened the door but didn't invite her inside.
"Linda.""
"I need to see Bella.""
"Why?""
"Because she's my daughter.""
I stepped into the hallway.
"What's happening, Mom?""
She looked at me.
For a moment, she seemed as though she wanted to hug me.
Then she noticed Michael's folder on the dining table.
"You're really doing this?""
I frowned.
"Doing what?""
"Taking legal action against Robert.""
Michael stood.
"Mrs. Reyes, nobody has accused you of anything beyond what you've already acknowledged. But we need to establish what happened.""
My mother looked at him.
"You don't understand. Robert is my husband.""
"And Isabella is your daughter.""
Linda flinched.
She turned toward me.
"Bella, please. Robert is under a lot of pressure. His business is failing. He made mistakes, but he didn't intend to hurt you.""
I stared at her.
"He ruined my father's trust.""
"He was trying to protect the family.""
"He used my money to borrow three hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""
"He thought he could repay it!""
"With what?""
My mother looked away.
I stepped closer.
"Mom, did you know he was planning to use the recording?""
She shook her head.
"Not until today.""
"Did you know Patricia tried to access it?""
"No.""
"Did you know Robert wanted to make me look unstable?""
My mother's eyes filled again.
"Bella, he said it was only an option if everything else failed.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"An option?""
She covered her mouth.
Grandma Evelyn moved closer.
"Linda, you need to stop making excuses.""
My mother suddenly turned on her.
"You don't know what it's like! You weren't living with us! You didn't see how Daniel left everything behind!""
Grandma's voice remained calm.
"Daniel left his daughter a future.""
"He left me with bills, hospital expenses, and a child who reminded me of him every single day!""
The room went silent.
I felt as though the air had disappeared.
My mother looked at me.
For a second, I thought she might apologize.
Instead, she whispered, "I was trying to survive.""
I looked down at my hands.
"Was I the reason you were struggling?""
"No.""
"Then why did you treat me like I was?""
Linda began crying.
I wanted to comfort her.
That was the worst part.
Even after everything, some part of me still wanted my mother to hold me and tell me that I hadn't done anything wrong.
But I couldn't pretend anymore.
Michael stepped forward.
"Mrs. Reyes, I strongly recommend that you give a full statement to the attorney and the bank. If you have documents or messages showing what Robert instructed you to do, preserve them.""
My mother nodded.
Then she reached into her purse.
She removed a small flash drive.
"I have something.""
Michael looked at it.
"What is it?""
"Robert's business files. He keeps copies of everything on his laptop, but he backed up some of the documents here.""
"Why are you giving this to us?""
My mother looked at me.
"Because I don't want him doing this to Bella.""
Grandma Evelyn took a breath.
"Linda, why now?""
My mother lowered her head.
"Because I heard him talking to Patricia. He said once the recording was gone, nobody would be able to prove what Daniel wanted.""
Michael carefully placed the flash drive into an evidence envelope.
"What exactly did you hear?""
My mother swallowed.
"Robert said the recording contained proof that he had been warned not to touch the trust. He said Daniel had recorded their conversation.""
My heart began pounding.
A recording of my father talking about Robert?
I looked at Michael.
"Can we hear it?""
He nodded slowly.
"Once the bank completes the verification process.""
My mother stood.
"I should go.""
I watched her walk toward the door.
"Mom?""
She stopped.
I hesitated.
"Did you ever like my dress?""
She turned around.
Her face crumpled.
"Yes, Bella.""
"Then why didn't you defend me?""
She couldn't answer.
She walked out.
I stood in the hallway long after the door closed.
That night, Michael contacted the bank's compliance department and submitted the flash drive for secure examination.
The next morning, Thomas Bennett called.
The files contained several emails between Robert and Patricia.
One message was dated two days before the attempted access request.
Robert had written:
Once the recording is destroyed or discredited, Daniel's alleged restrictions become unenforceable. We need the transfer completed before Isabella's birthday.
Patricia had replied:
I can submit the authorization, but I will not guarantee the bank will release the file.
Robert's response was even more disturbing.
The girl is fourteen. She won't understand the paperwork. Her mother will sign whatever we put in front of her.
I read the message twice.
Then I looked at Grandma Evelyn.
"That's what he thinks of me?""
She closed the laptop.
"That's what he thinks he can get away with.""
Thomas had another piece of news.
The bank had recovered an original audio file from the archive.
It was intact.
And because the attempted access request had triggered a security review, the bank had moved the recording into an even more restricted evidence vault.
My birthday was two days away.
Michael arranged for Grandma Evelyn, Thomas, and an independent bank representative to be present when the recording was released.
But there was one final detail.
The recording had been created in my father's hospital room.
And the bank's metadata showed that it was almost forty minutes long.
I couldn't sleep that night.
I kept imagining my father's voice.
Would he sound tired?
Would he sound frightened?
Would he say my name?
At 2:13 a.m., I received a text from Brianna.
*Brianna:* Robert knows Mom gave you the flash drive.
I sat upright.
*Me:* How?
*Brianna:* He saw the messages on her phone.
Then:
*Brianna:* He's packing.
*Me:* Where is he going?
*Brianna:* I don't know. But he said he isn't going to prison for a little girl's inheritance.
I stared at the screen.
Another message appeared.
*Brianna:* Bella, I think he's coming to the bank tomorrow.
Then a final message arrived.
*Brianna:* He said if your father gets to speak one more time, everything is over.
I immediately called Michael.
He answered half asleep.
"Isabella?""
I read him the messages.
His voice became sharp.
"Don't leave your grandmother's house. I'm contacting the bank and the authorities now.""
I looked at the photograph of my father beside my bed.
For the first time, I understood something.
Robert wasn't afraid of me.
May you like
He was afraid of what my father had left behind.
And tomorrow, I was finally going to hear it.
