Amused

Chapter 5: The Document Hidden in the Garage

Michael Harris answered his phone at 12:16 a.m.

He sounded tired, but the moment Grandma Evelyn explained Brianna's messages, his voice became serious.

"Do not confront Robert," he said.

Grandma put the phone on speaker.

"He's planning to destroy evidence.""

"Then we need to make sure the bank preserves every original record and recording. I'll contact their compliance department first thing in the morning.""

"What about the document Brianna mentioned?"" I asked.

Michael paused.

"If it's authentic, it's potentially important evidence. But we cannot send Isabella into a confrontation to retrieve it.""

I looked at Grandma.

"Could Brianna get it?""

Michael sighed.

"Nobody should take unnecessary risks. We'll deal with the evidence through proper channels.""

After the call, Grandma sat beside me on the couch.

"Do you believe Brianna?""

I looked at my phone.

"I don't know.""

"She hurt you badly.""

"She ruined my dress.""

"Yes.""

"And she laughed while I cried.""

My grandmother nodded.

"People can do terrible things and still be frightened of what other people are doing.""

I read the messages again.

For the first time, I wondered whether Brianna had been participating in something she didn't fully understand.

At seven the next morning, Michael called.

The bank had confirmed that the original recording was stored in a restricted digital archive, with a separate encrypted backup.

Robert could not simply walk in and destroy it.

However, the original signed documents were another matter.

Michael wanted us to preserve the bank's records before anyone attempted to interfere.

At nine, we met him at the bank.

Thomas Bennett was waiting in the lobby.

He led us into his office and placed a thick file on the desk.

"We've reviewed the preliminary transaction records," he explained.

"Several transfers were made from an account associated with the trust.""

Grandma Evelyn leaned forward.

"Who authorized them?""

Thomas opened the file.

"Linda Reyes signed two withdrawal requests. A third request was submitted with a signature attributed to Daniel Reyes.""

I stared at the paper.

"Was it his real signature?""

Thomas shook his head.

"We cannot make that determination. That's why we are preserving the original.""

Michael examined the documents.

"Where is the original authorization?""

"In secure records storage.""

"Has anyone requested access?""

Thomas hesitated.

"Yesterday afternoon, an individual identifying himself as Robert Whitaker contacted the bank.""

Grandma's face tightened.

"What did he want?""

"Copies of the original trust agreement and the recording release instructions.""

Michael leaned forward.

"Did you provide them?""

"No. The restrictions are still active.""

I felt my stomach twist.

"He knows about the recording.""

Thomas nodded.

"He appears to.""

Michael closed the folder.

"Then I want a formal preservation notice issued immediately.""

Thomas began typing.

While the adults discussed legal procedures, my phone vibrated.

Brianna.

*Brianna:* Are you with Grandma?

*Me:* Yes.

*Brianna:* I need to tell you something.

*Me:* What?

*Brianna:* Robert found out I messaged you.

I stared at the screen.

Another message arrived.

*Brianna:* He's furious.

Then:

*Brianna:* He took the phone I use for school and checked everything.

I typed quickly.

*Me:* Are you okay?

There was no response.

I waited.

A minute passed.

Then two.

Finally:

*Brianna:* I found something in the garage.

My heartbeat quickened.

*Me:* What?

*Brianna:* A box with Dad's name on it.

I looked at Grandma.

She was still talking to Michael.

I showed her the screen.

Her expression changed immediately.

"Ask her where.""

I typed.

*Me:* Where is it?

Brianna replied:

*Brianna:* Behind Robert's workbench. There's a loose panel in the cabinet.

Then another message appeared.

*Brianna:* Bella, I think he knows I found it.

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Brianna.

I answered.

"Hello?""

Her voice was barely audible.

"Bella?""

"Brianna, what's happening?""

"I don't have much time.""

"Are you okay?""

She let out a nervous breath.

"He's downstairs. He thinks I'm in my room.""

"Where's the box?""

"In the garage.""

"Can you get it?""

"I don't know.""

I looked at Grandma.

She motioned for me to put the call on speaker.

"Brianna," Grandma said gently, "this is Evelyn. Listen to me. Don't do anything dangerous. We'll get help.""

Brianna sounded close to tears.

"I didn't know what he was doing.""

I froze.

"What do you mean?""

"I thought he was helping Mom. He said your dad had left debts and that the money was supposed to pay them.""

"Then why did you destroy my dress?""

Silence.

I gripped the phone.

"Why, Brianna?""

Her voice broke.

"Because he told me to.""

I felt as if someone had punched me.

"What?""

"He said if you had your quinceañera, your grandmother would bring you to the bank and ask questions. He said if the dress was ruined, your mom would cancel everything and you'd stay home.""

My throat tightened.

"So you did it because Robert told you?""

"Yes.""

"You knew how much I worked for it.""

"I know.""

"You watched me cry.""

"I know, Bella.""

I closed my eyes.

"Then why are you helping me now?""

Brianna began crying.

"Because I found the box.""

She took a shaky breath.

"And because Robert said something last night. He said once the money was transferred, we wouldn't have to worry about you anymore.""

I looked at Grandma.

Her face had gone pale.

"Brianna," I whispered, "what did he mean?""

"I don't know. But he has papers with your name on them. Papers saying your mother has permission to control your inheritance.""

Grandma Evelyn immediately stood.

"Michael, we need to contact the authorities if there is a threat.""

Michael nodded and reached for his phone.

I kept listening.

"Brianna, can you leave the house?""

"I can't. Robert locked the garage door.""

"Don't go near him.""

"I know.""

Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

"Bella, there's a photograph inside the box.""

"What photograph?""

"Your dad. He's standing next to Robert.""

"Okay.""

"But Robert is holding a document.""

"What document?""

"I think it's the original trust agreement.""

A loud noise sounded on her end.

Then a man's voice.

"Brianna!""

She gasped.

"He's coming.""

"Brianna, hang up and get somewhere safe!""

But before the call ended, I heard Robert shout again.

"Who are you talking to?""

The phone went silent.

I stared at the screen.

Grandma Evelyn placed her hand on my shoulder.

"Michael is contacting the appropriate authorities. We're not going anywhere near that house until it's safe.""

I nodded, but my hands wouldn't stop shaking.

Less than twenty minutes later, Michael received a call.

He listened carefully.

Then his expression changed.

"What do you mean he's leaving?""

He looked at Grandma.

"Robert's vehicle has just been reported leaving the neighborhood.""

My heart dropped.

"With Brianna?""

Michael didn't answer immediately.

He listened again.

Then he put the phone down.

"Your mother is still at the house. Brianna is with her.""

I let out a breath.

"She's safe?""

"For now.""

But the relief disappeared when Thomas approached with another document.

"Mr. Harris, there's something else you need to see.""

Michael examined it.

His face hardened.

"What is this?""

Thomas pointed to a recent request.

"Someone submitted an application yesterday to change the beneficiary contact details and transfer the trust administration to another institution.""

Grandma Evelyn frowned.

"Who signed it?""

Thomas turned the page.

Linda Reyes.

But underneath her signature was another name.

Robert Whitaker.

I stared at the form.

There was a handwritten note at the bottom.

*Complete before November 7.*

My fifteenth birthday.

Michael slowly folded the paper.

"Now we know why they're rushing.""

I looked at him.

"What happens on November seventh?""

He met my eyes.

"According to your father's instructions, that's the day the recording becomes available.""

Then he added something that made my stomach twist.

"And it's also the deadline on the document transferring your trust.""

Robert wasn't simply trying to hide the past.

May you like

He was racing against my birthday.

And he was getting desperate.
