Amused

Chapter 9: The Truth He Couldn’t Hide Anymore

My fingers went numb around the phone.

The picture stared back at me.

Maya.

Sleeping in her hospital bed.

Taken from inside the hospital.

My first thought wasn’t fear.

It was rage.

A kind of anger I had never felt before.

Not the kind that made you raise your voice.

The kind that made your entire body go still.

Ryan had crossed every line.

He wasn’t just lying anymore.

He was watching us.

I turned to the doctor.

“Call security.””

He looked at my phone.

His face changed.

“Where did he get that?””

“That’s what I want to know.””

The doctor immediately stepped into the hallway and spoke to a nurse.

Within seconds, the room became a storm of movement.

Security officers.

Hospital staff.

Questions.

But I barely heard any of it.

Because Maya was shaking.

“Mama…”

I sat beside her.

“I’m here.””

“He’s mad.””

I brushed her hair back.

“Let him be.””

She looked surprised.

“You’re not scared?””

I looked at my daughter.

The little girl who had spent months being afraid.

The little girl who thought telling the truth would destroy everything.

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“Not anymore.””

A few minutes later, a security officer came in.

“We checked the cameras.””

My stomach tightened.

“And?””

He looked serious.

“There was unauthorized access to this floor.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Was it Ryan?””

“We’re still confirming.””

The doctor stepped forward.

“He cannot come near this patient.””

The officer nodded.

“We’re handling it.””

But I knew something.

Ryan didn’t need to be physically close to hurt us anymore.

He had already spent years doing that.

The officer left.

The room became quiet again.

Maya looked exhausted.

I sat beside her until her eyes closed.

Only when I knew she was asleep did I step outside.

Claire was waiting.

The second she saw my face, she knew something happened.

“What?””

I showed her the message.

Her expression changed.

“He was here?””

“Yes.””

Claire looked toward the hallway.

“Emily…”

“What?””

“There’s something else I need to tell you.””

I almost laughed.

Another secret.

Another thing someone had hidden.

“Of course there is.””

Her face fell.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at her.

“I don’t need apologies.””

“What do you need?””

“The truth.””

Claire nodded.

“I should have told you years ago.””

“About what?””

She took a breath.

“Vanessa.””

I crossed my arms.

“What about her?””

“She wasn’t just someone Ryan was seeing.””

I waited.

Claire looked down.

“She worked at the same company as Ryan.””

“Okay.””

“And she found something.””

“What?””

“Something about Ryan’s business.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“What does that have to do with Maya?””

Claire shook her head.

“I don’t know everything.””

“But?””

“But Ryan was using Maya’s medical records to cover something.””

My stomach turned.

“What?””

“I overheard him talking.””

“When?””

“Months ago.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t understand it.””

I stared at her.

“You understood enough to be scared.””

She looked away.

That hurt.

Because she knew.

Everyone knew.

Except me.

“What did he say?””

Claire swallowed.

“He said if anyone looked too closely, they would find out what happened the year Maya was born.””

I felt cold.

“The year she was born.””

“Yes.””

I thought about the doctor.

The confidential report.

The missing pieces.

“Claire.””

“What?””

“What happened to me after I gave birth?””

Her eyes filled.

“I thought you remembered.””

“I don’t.””

She looked devastated.

“Emily…”

“Tell me.””

She sat down.

“After Maya was born, Ryan told everyone you were exhausted.””

I waited.

“But you weren’t just exhausted.””

My heart pounded.

“What happened?””

“You found out something.””

“What?””

Claire shook her head.

“You were trying to leave.””

The hallway seemed to tilt.

“Leave?””

“Yes.””

“Me?””

She nodded.

“You told me Ryan had lied to you.””

My throat tightened.

“What lie?””

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

She wiped her eyes.

“You were going to tell me after you got home from the hospital.””

I stared at her.

“And then?””

“Then you changed.””

“What do you mean?””

“You stopped talking about it.””

I whispered:

“Why?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because Ryan told me you had postpartum anxiety.””

The words hit me.

“He told you I was crazy.””

Claire looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“And you believed him?””

“I was wrong.””

The silence between us was painful.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

This time I answered.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice.

Not Ryan.

“Mrs. Carter?””

“Yes.””

“This is Detective Lewis.””

I straightened.

“Yes?””

“We found your husband.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where?””

“He’s outside the hospital.””

I looked toward the entrance.

“What is he doing?””

A pause.

“He’s requesting to speak with you.””

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

Detective Lewis continued.

“He claims he has evidence that changes everything.””

I looked at Claire.

“What evidence?””

“He didn’t say.””

I almost hung up.

Then Detective Lewis added:

“Mrs. Carter.””

“Yes?””

“You need to know something.””

“What?””

“Your husband brought an attorney.””

My stomach dropped.

An attorney.

He wasn’t coming to apologize.

He was preparing.

“What does he want?””

The detective’s voice lowered.

“He wants custody of Maya.””

My blood ran cold.

“No.””

“He claims you are unstable and have been influenced by false accusations.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

The same strategy.

Make me doubt myself.

Make everyone doubt me.

“He says he can prove it.””

I looked through the hospital window at Maya sleeping.

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“He can’t.””

“Mrs. Carter, there’s one more thing.””

“What?””

The detective hesitated.

“We found something in his vehicle.””

My heart pounded.

“What?””

“A folder.””

“What was inside?””

“Medical records.””

I felt sick.

“Whose?””

A pause.

Then:

“Yours.””

I couldn’t speak.

“From the hospital twelve years ago.””

The world went silent.

“What does that mean?””

“We’re still reviewing them.””

“Detective.””

“Yes?””

“Tell me.””

Another pause.

Then he said:

“There is a signed document.””

My fingers went cold.

“Signed by who?””

“By you.””

I froze.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“What does it say?””

His voice became careful.

“Mrs. Carter…”

“Yes?””

“The document states that you requested Maya’s records be sealed.””

My heart stopped.

“I never did that.””

“We know.””

The hallway disappeared.

The hospital.

The voices.

Everything.

Because suddenly the truth became clear.

Someone had used my name.

Someone had made decisions for me.

Someone had rewritten my own history.

And then Detective Lewis said the words that made me realize Ryan’s biggest secret wasn’t an affair.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t even what happened to Maya.

It was this:

“Mrs. Carter…”

“Yes?””

“The signature on that document was dated two days after Maya was born.””

My breath caught.

“That was when I was unconscious.””

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.””

I stared at the floor.

Because there was only one possibility.

Someone had signed my name.

And Ryan had spent twelve years making sure nobody ever found out.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Ryan.

I opened it.

*Now you finally understand why I had to protect our family.*

I looked at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*Ask Claire what she saw that night.*

Slowly, I turned toward my sister.

Claire was already crying.

Because she knew.

She knew exactly what I was about to ask.

“Claire…”

Her face broke.

“Emily, I need to tell you something.””

My voice trembled.

“What?””

She whispered:

“I wasn’t the one who signed your name.””

I stared at her.

“Then who did?””

Claire looked toward Maya’s room.

Then back at me.

May you like

And said:

“The person who was supposed to protect you.””
