Amused

Chapter 8: The Secret Hidden Since The Beginning

For a few seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

The words echoed through the phone.

*“The proof that Ryan has been hiding since the day Maya was born.””*

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Vanessa…”

My voice came out barely above a whisper.

“What proof?””

The woman on the other end was crying.

“I don’t know where it is.””

“Then how do you know it exists?””

“Because Ryan showed it to me.””

I looked at Claire.

She was staring at me, waiting.

“Showed you what?””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“Documents.””

My heart sank.

“What kind of documents?””

“The kind that could ruin him.””

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“Why would he show you something like that?””

Silence.

Then Vanessa answered:

“Because he trusted me.””

The words hurt.

Not because I was jealous.

That part of me was already gone.

Because I realized how many people had seen pieces of Ryan’s truth while I was living inside his lie.

“When did he show you?””

“Why?””

“He thought he could use it against you.””

My stomach turned.

“Against me?””

“Yes.””

I gripped the phone tighter.

“Vanessa, I need you to tell me everything.””

She was quiet.

Then she said:

“Not over the phone.””

“Why?””

“Because Ryan knows I called you.””

My heart stopped.

“How?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because he was here.””

I looked around the room.

“What?””

“He came to my apartment.””

“When?””

My blood ran cold.

The same time I was in the hospital.

The same time I found the box.

“Where are you now?””

“I left.””

“Where?””

“I don’t know.””

Her voice cracked.

“I just know I can’t go home.””

I looked at Claire.

“Vanessa, listen to me. You need to go somewhere safe.””

“I know.””

“Do you have the documents?””

“No.””

My heart sank.

“Who has them?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Your husband.””

The call ended.

I stood there frozen.

Claire stepped closer.

“What happened?””

I lowered the phone.

“Ryan has been hiding something since Maya was born.””

Claire’s face tightened.

“What kind of something?””

“I don’t know.””

But I did know one thing.

Whatever it was, Ryan was willing to destroy everything to keep it hidden.

Including his own daughter.

I grabbed the box.

“We need to go back to the hospital.””

Claire nodded.

But before we left, I looked around the bedroom one more time.

This wasn’t my home anymore.

It was a crime scene.

A place filled with memories that suddenly had different meanings.

The family photos.

The conversations.

The promises.

All of it.

On the way back, I called the hospital.

I needed to make sure Maya was okay.

The nurse answered.

“Emergency department.””

“This is Emily Carter. My daughter Maya is there.””

“Yes, Mrs. Carter.””

“Is she okay?””

A pause.

That pause scared me.

“What happened?””

“Your husband returned.””

My hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“What?””

“He tried to enter the pediatric area.””

My heart raced.

“Did he get in?””

“No.””

I exhaled.

“Where is he?””

“He left.””

I didn’t believe it.

Not for a second.

Ryan didn’t leave because he gave up.

He left because he was planning.

When I arrived, Maya was awake.

The second she saw me, her eyes filled with relief.

“Mama.””

I rushed to her.

“I’m here.””

She grabbed my hand.

“Did you talk to Aunt Claire?””

I froze slightly.

“Yes.””

Maya looked away.

“I’m sorry.””

My heart broke.

“For what?””

“For making you think she did something.””

I stared at her.

“What do you mean?””

She looked confused.

“I didn’t mean Aunt Claire hurt me.””

I sat down.

“Then why did you write that?””

Maya looked at the note in my hand.

Her face changed.

“Oh.””

A small sound.

Like she suddenly understood.

“Maya?””

She swallowed.

“I meant Aunt Claire knew.””

The room went quiet.

“She knew?””

Maya nodded.

“She knew about Vanessa.””

I felt a wave of relief mixed with anger.

“Why didn’t you explain?””

“I tried.””

“When?””

“Before.””

“Before what?””

She looked at me.

“Before Dad made me promise.””

My blood ran cold.

“What promise?””

Maya looked down.

“He made me promise I wouldn’t tell anyone about the night I saw him.””

I moved closer.

“What night?””

She took a breath.

“The night he hurt me.””

The words still felt impossible.

But I listened.

“He was arguing with Vanessa.””

“About what?””

“I don’t know.””

Maya squeezed her eyes shut.

“But I heard him say my name.””

My chest tightened.

“Why?””

“Because he thought I knew something.””

“What?””

“That he wasn’t my real dad.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“What?””

Maya started crying.

“I don’t know if it’s true.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

But the word came out weak.

Because I remembered the paternity test.

The documents.

The secrets.

“Maya, look at me.””

She did.

“Ryan is your father.””

“But why would he say that?””

I didn’t have an answer.

Because suddenly I understood.

The paternity test wasn’t hidden because Ryan doubted her.

It was hidden because he was afraid someone else would.

The doctor entered then.

He stopped when he saw our faces.

“Is everything okay?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

I held up the papers.

“I need to understand something.””

He looked at the documents.

Then his expression changed.

“Where did you get these?””

“My husband’s things.””

The doctor became very serious.

“Mrs. Carter, there is something you need to know.””

My heart sank.

“About Maya’s birth?””

He nodded slowly.

“I wasn’t sure if I should tell you before.””

“Why?””

“Because Ryan requested confidentiality.””

My jaw tightened.

“He doesn’t get to decide that anymore.””

The doctor looked at Maya.

Then back at me.

“When Maya was born, there was a complication.””

“What complication?””

“You experienced severe bleeding.””

I nodded.

“I know that.””

“No.””

His voice softened.

“You were told you had a difficult delivery.””

My stomach turned.

“What else?””

He took a breath.

“You were unconscious longer than expected.””

I felt dizzy.

“How long?””

“Almost two days.””

I stared at him.

Two days.

“Ryan was the one who made decisions during that time.””

My hands went cold.

“What decisions?””

The doctor looked uncomfortable.

“He asked questions about Maya’s records.””

“What kind of questions?””

“About her biological information.””

I looked at Maya.

Then the doctor.

“And?””

He hesitated.

“He requested a private test.””

“The paternity test.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

“But it proved he was her father.””

“Yes.””

“Then why hide it?””

The doctor looked down.

“Because the test wasn’t the only document.””

My heart stopped.

“What else was there?””

He was quiet for a moment.

Then:

“A second report.””

“What report?””

The doctor looked at Maya.

“A report about what happened before she was born.””

The room went silent.

“Before she was born?””

He nodded.

“Mrs. Carter…”

His voice lowered.

“There was evidence that Ryan knew something about your pregnancy that you did not.””

My body went still.

“What?””

Before he could answer, Maya’s monitor began beeping faster.

She grabbed my hand.

“Mama…”

“I’m here.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“Dad knows.””

I looked toward the door.

“What?””

She whispered:

“He knows we found out.””

The lights in the hallway flickered.

Then my phone buzzed.

One message.

From Ryan.

I opened it.

Only one sentence.

*You should have left the past buried.*

And underneath it was a photo.

A photo taken inside the hospital.

Of Maya sleeping.

Taken minutes ago.

My blood turned cold.

May you like

Because Ryan wasn’t just watching us.

He was already inside.
