Chapter 7: The Name Written In The Dark
I stared at the last line until my vision blurred.
*“It was Aunt Claire.””*
For a moment, I couldn’t understand what I was reading.
Not because the words were unclear.
Because my heart refused to accept them.
I slowly lowered the paper.
Claire was standing beside me.
My sister.
My best friend.
The woman who held my hand when Maya was born.
The woman who sat beside me through every argument with Ryan.
The woman who just told me she always knew something was wrong.
My mouth felt dry.
“Claire.””
She looked at me.
“What?””
I held up the note.
Her face changed.
Not dramatically.
Not like someone caught in a lie.
Like someone seeing a ghost.
“Where did you get that?””
My stomach dropped.
Because that was not the question of an innocent person.
An innocent person would ask, “What is that?””
Not “Where did you get that?””
I took a step back.
“Maya wrote this.””
Claire went completely still.
“What?””
“She wrote that you know what happened.””
Claire looked toward the hallway.
Then back at me.
“Emily, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice surprised both of us.
“No, you listen to me.””
She opened her mouth.
But I kept going.
“My daughter was terrified in her own house.””
“I know.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You don’t get to say that.””
Her face softened.
“Emily…”
“You knew something was wrong.””
Silence.
That silence answered more than words could.
My chest tightened.
“How long?””
Claire looked away.
“How long did you know?””
She sat down slowly.
“I didn’t know everything.””
“But you knew something.””
She didn’t answer.
I felt tears building.
“Claire.””
Her eyes filled.
“Six months.””
The number hit me.
Six months.
For six months, my daughter had been suffering.
For six months, my sister had carried a secret.
For six months, everyone knew something except me.
“Why?””
My voice broke.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Claire wiped her face.
“Because Maya begged me not to.””
I laughed once.
But there was no humor in it.
“She begged you not to tell me?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because she thought Ryan would hurt you.””
My anger froze.
“What?””
“She wasn’t worried about herself.””
Claire’s voice shook.
“She was worried about what would happen if you found out.””
I looked down at the note.
The handwriting suddenly felt heavier.
My daughter wasn’t trying to accuse Claire.
She was trying to warn me.
But about what?
I stepped closer.
“Tell me everything.””
Claire took a deep breath.
“I came over that night because you called me.””
“I called you?””
“Yes.””
I frowned.
“I don’t remember.””
“You were crying.””
My heart skipped.
“What?””
“You said Ryan was acting strange.””
I searched my memory.
Nothing.
Just a blank space.
“I don’t remember that.””
Claire looked at me carefully.
“That’s what scared me.””
“What do you mean?””
“You don’t remember a lot of things that happened when Ryan was angry.””
The words sent a chill through me.
I thought about Dr. Bennett.
The hospital report.
The missing memories.
“What happened after Maya was born?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“I thought you knew.””
“Knew what?””
She swallowed.
“Emily… you had a medical emergency.””
My fingers went cold.
“What kind of emergency?””
“You lost a lot of blood.””
I stared at her.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
“You were told.””
“No.””
My voice got louder.
“I would remember.””
Claire looked heartbroken.
“You were exhausted. You were on medication. You were barely awake.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Because somewhere inside me, I knew something was wrong.
There were missing pieces.
Pieces Ryan had taken from me.
“What does this have to do with Maya?””
Claire looked at the box.
“Everything.””
She opened one of the letters.
“I found out something after Maya was born.””
“What?””
“Ryan wasn’t at the hospital the whole time.””
I stared at her.
“He wasn’t?””
“No.””
“Where was he?””
Claire hesitated.
Then whispered:
“With someone.””
My stomach twisted.
“The woman in the photograph?””
Claire looked at me.
“You found that?””
I nodded.
“Who is she?””
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me.
“Claire.””
Her eyes moved toward the door.
Then she said:
“Her name is Vanessa.””
I froze.
The name meant something.
Not because I knew Vanessa.
Because I had heard it before.
“Where?””
Claire looked at me.
“Ryan said it.””
“When?””
“Last year.””
My heart started pounding.
“What did he say?””
Claire’s voice dropped.
“He said Vanessa was tired of waiting.””
I felt sick.
“Waiting for what?””
Claire didn’t answer.
She didn’t have to.
I knew.
A second life.
A secret relationship.
A whole world built behind my back.
But something still didn’t make sense.
“If Ryan was hiding another woman, why was Maya involved?””
Claire looked at the note.
“Because Maya saw them.””
The room went silent.
“When?””
“Months ago.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“She saw Vanessa leaving the house.””
My breath caught.
“Our house?””
Claire nodded.
“Maya confronted Ryan.””
“What did he do?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“He threatened her.””
The word hung between us.
I grabbed the box.
“What exactly did he say?””
Claire looked at me.
“He told her that if she ruined his life, he would make sure you blamed her.””
My hands shook.
That was it.
That was the weapon.
Not fear of punishment.
Fear of losing me.
He convinced my daughter that telling the truth would destroy the person she loved most.
My daughter.
My baby girl.
She carried that alone.
I picked up my phone.
“I’m calling the police.””
Claire nodded.
“Good.””
But before I could dial, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I stared at it.
Neither of us moved.
Then it rang again.
Claire whispered:
“Don’t answer.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Her face turned pale.
“Because I think I know who it is.””
The phone kept vibrating.
Finally, I answered.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then a woman’s voice whispered:
“Emily?””
My blood ran cold.
“Who is this?””
A shaky breath came through the phone.
“My name is Vanessa.””
I looked at Claire.
Her face had gone completely white.
“What do you want?””
The woman started crying.
“I need to tell you the truth.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“About Ryan?””
A pause.
Then:
“Yes.””
My heart pounded.
“Why should I believe you?””
Another pause.
Then Vanessa said something that made my entire body freeze.
“Because I was there the night Maya got hurt.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“What?””
“I saw what happened.””
My fingers went numb.
“Then why didn’t you help her?””
The woman sobbed.
“Because Ryan told me if I spoke, he would destroy both of us.””
I looked at Claire.
At the box.
At the evidence scattered across the room.
Everything was falling into place.
But then Vanessa said the one thing I wasn’t prepared for.
“Emily…”
Her voice broke.
“Ryan didn’t hurt Maya because he was angry.””
I swallowed.
“Then why?””
The answer came quietly.
“He hurt her because she found the proof.””
I froze.
“What proof?””
May you like
Vanessa whispered:
“The proof that Ryan has been hiding since the day Maya was born.””
