Amused

Chapter 9: The Betrayal Inside Bennett House

I couldn’t move.

The words didn’t make sense.

My company.

My restaurants.

My name.

Everything I built.

Someone had been inside it.

Watching.

Waiting.

“How?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because you didn’t build it alone.””

The sentence hurt more than I expected.

Because it was true.

No one builds anything alone.

But there was a difference between receiving help…

And being used.

Richard looked at Daniel.

“Who owns part of his company?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

I did.

“Tell me.””

Daniel took a breath.

“Your original investors.””

I frowned.

“My investors?””

“Yes.””

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“It was hidden through several companies.””

I remembered.

When I started my first restaurant, Daniel introduced me to investors.

People who believed in my vision.

People who helped me grow.

I thought they were strangers taking a chance on me.

But maybe they weren’t.

Maybe they were buying access.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“Charles Parker.””

Richard went pale.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Ethan.””

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“You’re telling me my entire career was funded by the family that destroyed mine?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

That was exactly what he was saying.

I walked to the window.

Outside, the city lights reflected against the glass.

The same city where I built my dreams.

The same city where someone had been controlling pieces of my life.

“How much?””

Daniel looked confused.

“What?””

“How much of my company?””

He hesitated.

“Twenty-eight percent.””

I closed my eyes.

Twenty-eight percent.

Enough to influence.

Enough to watch.

Enough to sabotage.

Richard whispered:

“Why?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Because Charles Parker believed Ethan would eventually uncover the truth.””

“And he wanted control.””

“Yes.””

I turned around.

“Then why help me?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because your father asked me to.””

That answer stopped me.

“My father?””

Daniel nodded.

“The night before he disappeared, Thomas came to me.””

“What did he say?””

Daniel swallowed.

“He said, ‘If I fail, protect my son.’”

The anger inside me weakened.

Only slightly.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because your mother made me promise.””

“My mother?””

“She believed the truth would destroy you.””

I laughed.

“It almost did anyway.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

A long silence followed.

Then Richard spoke.

“What about Vanessa?””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel’s expression changed.

“She was involved.””

“In what?””

Daniel hesitated.

“She helped Michael.””

I shook my head.

“She also stole money.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Because someone threatened her.””

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

The office door suddenly opened.

Vanessa stood there.

Her face was bruised.

Not badly.

But enough.

Everyone froze.

Richard moved toward her.

“What happened?””

She looked at Daniel.

“You didn’t tell him everything.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“Vanessa.””

She ignored him.

She looked at me.

“Your father wasn’t the only person who disappeared.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

She stepped inside.

“Michael didn’t die.””

Silence.

Complete silence.

Richard looked like the world had stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“I saw him.””

Daniel stood.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two days ago.””

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Is it?””

She pulled out her phone.

Her hands shook.

Then she showed us a picture.

A man standing outside a building.

Older.

Thinner.

But recognizable.

Michael Parker.

Alive.

Richard covered his mouth.

“No.””

Vanessa whispered:

“He contacted me because he knew Ethan found the letter.””

I stared at the photo.

The dead man.

The missing brother.

The person whose secrets started everything.

Alive.

“How?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because the accident wasn’t an accident.””

Daniel became pale.

“Vanessa, stop.””

She turned toward him.

“You knew.””

Everyone looked at Daniel.

My stomach dropped.

Daniel didn’t deny it.

Richard stepped back.

“You knew Michael was alive?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

I stared at the man who had guided me for ten years.

My mentor.

My friend.

The person I trusted.

“You knew.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I was trying to protect you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You were hiding him.””

Daniel said nothing.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“There’s one more thing.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“The person who ordered Michael’s disappearance…”

She paused.

“The person who controlled your father…”

Her voice dropped.

“It wasn’t Charles Parker.””

I waited.

“Then who?””

Vanessa looked at me.

May you like

And whispered the name I never expected.

“Your mother.””
