Amused

Chapter 6: The Person I Trusted Most

I stared at the photograph.

Three men.

My father.

Michael Parker.

And someone else.

Someone I knew.

Someone whose face made my stomach drop.

Because it belonged to the person who had spent the last ten years helping me build everything.

My mentor.

My business partner.

Daniel Brooks.

I looked at the message again.

Then at Vanessa.

She saw my expression.

“What?””

I turned the phone toward her.

She looked at the picture.

And immediately covered her mouth.

“You know him?””

Richard asked.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Who is Daniel Brooks?””

Her face became pale.

“He was your father’s closest friend.””

The words felt impossible.

Daniel.

The man who taught me how to negotiate.

The man who believed in my ideas before anyone else.

The man who invested in my first restaurant.

The man who always said:

“Ethan, never forget where you started.””

I had trusted him more than anyone.

“You knew?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“I knew his name.””

“Did you know he was involved?””

“No.””

Her answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

I stepped closer.

“Are you sure?””

She looked hurt.

“Yes.””

Richard looked between us.

“Someone explain what is happening.””

I barely heard him.

My mind was somewhere else.

Back fifteen years.

Back to the day I opened my first restaurant.

Daniel had shown up with a check.

I told him I couldn’t accept it.

He laughed.

“Ethan, everyone needs someone who believes in them.””

At the time, I thought he was saving me.

Now I wondered if he was protecting something.

My phone rang.

This time, I answered immediately.

“Daniel.””

Silence.

Then:

“You found the picture.””

His voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

My entire body went cold.

“You sent it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

A pause.

“Because you deserve to know.””

I laughed quietly.

“You’re the one who sent me proof that you were standing next to my father?””

“Yes.””

“Why would you do that?””

Another pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Because I’m tired of carrying someone else’s sins.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Instead:

“Meet me.””

“No.””

“Ethan.””

His voice changed.

The first time I had ever heard fear in it.

“If you want the truth about your father, your mother, and Michael…”

He paused.

“You need to come alone.””

I ended the call.

Richard looked at me.

“You’re not actually considering that.””

I looked at him.

“I am.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“That’s exactly what someone dangerous wants.””

I looked at the flash drive.

The letter.

The photograph.

Everything connected to a past I never knew existed.

“What would you do?””

Richard didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

Everyone wants answers until the answers become dangerous.

Vanessa stood.

“I’ll come with you.””

“No.””

She stopped.

“Ethan.””

“You lied to me.””

“I know.””

“You humiliated me.””

“I know.””

“You helped hide this.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

I looked at her.

“Then why should I trust you?””

She whispered:

“You shouldn’t.””

That surprised me.

She continued:

“But you should know something.””

“What?””

“Michael died trying to protect you.””

I froze.

“Why?””

“Because he believed the same person who destroyed your family would eventually come after you.””

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“And who is that person?””

She looked at the photograph.

At Daniel.

Then she said:

“We never found out.””

A sound came from the entrance.

The restaurant doors opened.

Everyone turned.

A man walked in.

Older.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

Calm expression.

I recognized him instantly.

Not because I knew him.

Because I had seen his face before.

In old photographs.

In memories.

In the stories my mother never finished telling.

Vanessa whispered:

“No…”

Richard looked confused.

“Who is that?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because the man was looking directly at me.

And when he spoke, his voice was exactly like the one from the phone.

“Hello, Ethan.””

My heart stopped.

The man smiled.

“I’m sorry it took me so long to come home.””

May you like

Then he said the words that destroyed everything I believed about my past.

“I’m your father.””
