Amused

Chapter 8: The File Hidden Beneath My Name

The emergency lights flickered on.

Red.

Dim.

Unnatural.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Then everyone moved at once.

Customers rushed toward the exits.

Servers tried to calm people.

Maya shouted instructions from across the room.

But I wasn’t looking at them.

I was looking at the empty space where Thomas had been standing.

He was gone.

So was Vanessa.

Richard grabbed my arm.

“Where did they go?””

I pulled away.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re telling me your father appears after fifteen years and disappears during a blackout?””

“Yes.””

Richard looked frustrated.

“That’s not normal.””

I almost laughed.

“Nothing about tonight is normal.””

My security team arrived minutes later.

The restaurant was secured.

Cameras were checked.

Doors were inspected.

Nothing.

No forced entry.

No suspicious movement.

Which somehow made it worse.

Because whoever had entered knew exactly what they were doing.

Maya approached me.

“Mr. Bennett.””

“Yes?””

“You need to see something.””

She handed me a tablet.

On the screen was the security footage.

I watched the moment before the blackout.

The restaurant.

The customers.

My table.

Then Thomas.

Then something caught my attention.

A man near the bar.

He wasn’t moving.

Everyone else was talking.

Eating.

Laughing.

But he was watching me.

“Stop.””

Maya paused the video.

I pointed.

“Zoom in.””

The image became clearer.

The man turned slightly.

And I recognized him.

Daniel Brooks.

My hands went cold.

“He was here.””

Richard looked over my shoulder.

“Your partner?””

“Yes.””

“But he left?””

“No.””

I looked at the screen.

“He never left.””

The realization hit me.

Daniel wasn’t reacting to what happened.

He was waiting for it.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time, from Daniel.

*“You’re closer than you realize.””*

I stared.

Then another message arrived.

*“Your father is not the person you should fear.””*

Richard saw it.

“What does that mean?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

The question was no longer who betrayed me.

It was who had been protecting me.

I went into my office.

The flash drive Vanessa gave me sat on my desk.

I connected it to my computer.

Files appeared.

Hundreds.

Financial records.

Emails.

Photos.

Documents.

And one folder.

Named:

*ETHAN BENNETT*

My hands froze.

I opened it.

Inside were records from my childhood.

School reports.

Medical documents.

Photographs.

Everything.

Someone had been collecting information about me.

Since I was a child.

Richard stood behind me.

“Who would do that?””

I clicked another file.

A scanned document appeared.

A report.

From fifteen years ago.

The title:

*Bennett Family Investigation*

I read the first page.

And my heart sank.

The investigator had written:

“Subject Ethan Bennett is unaware of his father’s involvement.””

I scrolled.

Then I saw another line.

“Recommendation: Keep Ethan away from financial operations until adulthood.””

I stopped.

Financial operations.

My entire life.

Someone had been monitoring me.

Protecting me.

Or controlling me.

I opened the final document.

A handwritten note.

My mother’s handwriting.

I knew it instantly.

Ethan,

If you ever find this, it means I failed to keep you away from this world.

I closed my eyes.

The words blurred.

She continued.

Your father made mistakes, but he never stopped trying to protect us.

I swallowed.

Then I read the next sentence.

The one that changed everything.

The greatest danger to you is not the person who hates you.

It is the person who loves you enough to lie.

I looked at Richard.

“What?””

I shook my head.

“Nothing.””

But I knew.

Someone close to me had lied.

Someone I trusted.

I continued reading.

Your father will tell you he disappeared to protect you.

He is telling the truth.

But there is another truth.

He wasn’t the only one who left.

I stopped.

My heart started racing.

Another page.

Missing.

Someone had removed it.

I searched the folder.

Nothing.

Only a blank space.

Then my computer froze.

The screen went black.

A message appeared.

*“You were never supposed to open this.””*

Richard stepped back.

“Someone hacked your system?””

“No.””

“How do you know?””

Because the message continued.

*“Your mother should have destroyed it.””*

I stared.

Then another line appeared.

*“Ask Daniel why he let her live.””*

I felt sick.

The office door opened.

I turned quickly.

Daniel stood there.

Alone.

No fear.

No surprise.

Just exhaustion.

“I wondered when you would find that file.””

Richard stepped forward.

“You knew?””

Daniel looked at him.

“Yes.””

I stood.

“How long?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Longer than you think.””

My voice became quiet.

“Were you watching me?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You were.””

Daniel looked down.

“I was protecting you.””

I laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

He looked at me.

“Because it’s true.””

“Then why does everyone who protects me lie to me?””

Daniel had no answer.

I stepped closer.

“Tell me the truth.””

He looked at the file.

Then at me.

“Your mother didn’t lose her job.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel whispered:

“She was fired because she was going to expose the person behind everything.””

“Who?””

Daniel looked terrified.

May you like

And then he said:

“The person who owns half of your company.””
