Amused

Chapter 6: The Child He Never Mentioned

The photo stayed on my phone screen for so long that it dimmed.

A baby.

A tiny face wrapped in a pink blanket.

Sophie’s arms around her.

And Daniel standing beside them.

Not years ago.

Not before me.

After.

After our wedding.

After he promised me forever.

After I changed my entire life to build a family with him.

My fingers trembled as I looked at Daniel.

“Who is that?””

Nobody spoke.

The silence was louder than any confession.

Daniel looked at his father.

Then at me.

Then away.

That was when I knew.

People look innocent when they are shocked.

Daniel looked guilty.

“Emma…”

I held up my hand.

“No.””

My voice surprised me.

It wasn’t angry.

It wasn’t broken.

It was empty.

“Do not explain this unless you are going to tell me the whole truth.””

Daniel swallowed.

“I was going to.””

I laughed.

A quiet, painful laugh.

“You keep saying that.””

He stepped closer.

“Emma, please.””

“Don’t come near me.””

He stopped.

For the first time in twelve years, my husband looked afraid of me.

Not because I could hurt him.

Because he finally understood that I was no longer the woman who would forgive everything.

“Who is the baby?””

Daniel sat down slowly.

“Her name is Mia.””

“Mia.””

I repeated the name.

A name that had existed in his world while I was living in a different reality.

“She’s my daughter.””

The words landed like a physical blow.

I looked at Robert.

At Daniel’s father.

“You knew?””

Robert lowered his head.

“Yes.””

I turned to Daniel.

“Your sister knew?””

“Yes.””

“The children knew?””

He hesitated.

“Yes.””

I closed my eyes.

Everyone knew.

Everyone.

Except me.

The person who had shared his bed.

The person who had cooked his meals.

The person who had stood beside him when he buried his mother.

The person who had believed every promise.

“You let me love children who knew more about your life than I did.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“That’s not fair.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

“Fair?””

I stared at him.

“You want to talk about fair?””

He looked down.

“I didn’t know how to tell you.””

“You had twelve years.””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

He didn’t answer.

So I did.

“You were scared I would leave.””

His silence confirmed it.

I nodded.

“There it is.””

Daniel rubbed his hands together.

“I thought if you knew everything at once, I would lose you.””

“You were right.””

His eyes lifted.

“What?””

“You should have lost me.””

The pain on his face almost made me feel something.

Almost.

But then I remembered the airport.

The kiss.

The lies.

The secret account.

The documents.

The years.

I looked at my phone again.

“Why did Sophie send this?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Why?””

“She’s angry.””

“At you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Another silence.

I felt something building.

Something worse.

“What did you do?””

Daniel looked away.

“Daniel.””

“I made mistakes.””

My chest tightened.

“Stop calling them mistakes.””

He looked at me.

“They are choices.””

The next morning, Sophie asked to meet.

I almost refused.

Then I realized something.

For years, Daniel controlled the story.

He decided what I knew.

What I didn’t know.

Who was innocent.

Who was guilty.

I was done letting him write the script.

We met at a park near the lake.

Sophie arrived alone.

She looked different outside the airport.

Less confident.

More human.

She sat across from me.

“I know you hate me.””

I looked at her.

“I don’t know you well enough to hate you.””

That surprised her.

“I’m sorry.””

I almost laughed.

“Are you?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

“Then why were you standing beside my husband with a boarding pass?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because I thought he was finally choosing me.””

That answer hurt because I understood it.

She wasn’t a stranger.

She was another person who had believed him.

“Tell me everything.””

She took a deep breath.

“Daniel and I met before your wedding.””

I stared at her.

“He told me his marriage was ending.””

My stomach turned.

“He wasn’t married to me yet.””

“He told me you two were only together because he felt responsible for you.””

I closed my eyes.

The same pattern.

The same words.

“He said he was going to leave.””

“When?””

“After your honeymoon.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“He said he needed time.””

My hands tightened around my coffee cup.

“He never went on a honeymoon with me.””

Sophie froze.

“What?””

“We canceled it because his father got sick.””

Her face changed.

A realization.

“He told me he had to stay home because he was taking care of family.””

I looked away.

Another lie.

She whispered:

“He was with me.””

The truth sat between us.

Two women.

One man.

One endless trail of excuses.

“Why did you stay?””

Sophie looked at the ground.

“Because he had Mia.””

I looked up.

“Mia?””

She nodded.

“When I found out I was pregnant, he promised me he would make things right.””

“And he didn’t.””

“No.””

The wind moved through the trees.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Sophie reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“He doesn’t know I have this.””

I stared at it.

“What is it?””

“Something I found in his office.””

My heart started racing.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

A handwritten letter.

The handwriting was Daniel’s.

The first line made my blood run cold.

*If anything happens to me, Emma must never know the truth.*

I looked at Sophie.

“What is this?””

She whispered:

“The truth about Mia’s father.””

I stared at the page.

Then read the next sentence.

And suddenly, the entire story changed.

May you like

Because Daniel had lied about one more thing.

Mia was not his daughter.
