Amused

Chapter 5: The Name Hidden in the Account

The name on the account belonged to my mother.

At first, I thought I was reading it wrong.

I stared at the screen.

Then I checked again.

Same name.

Same date.

Same account number.

My mother.

A woman who had passed away five years earlier.

A woman who had spent her final months believing Daniel was the perfect husband.

My hands went cold.

I called the bank again.

“I need more information about this account.””

The representative hesitated.

“Mrs. Carter, because of privacy rules—”

“I’m listed as the beneficiary.””

Another pause.

Then:

“I can transfer you to a specialist.””

Twenty minutes later, I was sitting in my car outside my house, listening to a stranger explain my husband’s secrets.

The account had been created shortly after our wedding.

Money had been deposited monthly.

Large amounts.

The notes attached to several transfers said:

*Family support.*

I whispered:

“My mother never received this money.””

The woman on the phone was quiet.

“No, ma’am.””

“Then where did it go?””

Another pause.

“We can only tell you the receiving account.””

I already knew.

But I needed to hear it.

“The money was transferred to an account under the name Robert Hayes.””

Daniel’s father.

I ended the call.

Everything connected.

The airport.

The family vacation.

The lies.

His father wasn’t just aware.

He was involved.

That night, I drove to Robert’s house.

I didn’t plan what I would say.

I didn’t need to.

Some conversations are written by years of silence.

He opened the door and froze.

“Emma?””

“Did you think I wouldn’t find out?””

His face changed.

“About what?””

I held up the bank documents.

“Don’t do that.””

He stepped back.

“Where did you get those?””

“Interesting question.””

His expression told me enough.

“You knew.””

Robert looked away.

“Emma…”

“You knew your son was cheating.””

Silence.

“You knew about Sophie.””

Silence.

“You knew about the vacation.””

Finally, he spoke.

“Daniel was unhappy.””

I laughed.

There it was.

The excuse.

The same one.

“He was unhappy?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t he leave?””

Robert didn’t answer.

“Why did he stay married to me while building another life?””

“He didn’t want to hurt you.””

I stared at him.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

My voice shook.

“But everyone keeps hurting me anyway.””

Robert sighed.

“You don’t understand the situation.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I understand perfectly.””

He looked tired.

“Daniel made mistakes.””

“Your whole family helped.””

That landed.

Because it was true.

Robert’s eyes lowered.

“We wanted to protect the children.””

I frowned.

“What children?””

He looked confused.

Then nervous.

And that was when I knew.

There was something else.

“What children?””

Robert said nothing.

I felt my heartbeat increase.

“Robert.””

He whispered:

“Daniel was going to tell you.””

I almost laughed.

“Tell me what?””

Before he answered, the front door opened.

Daniel walked in.

He looked at me.

Then at his father.

Then he closed his eyes.

“Dad.””

Robert looked guilty.

“Daniel…”

I turned to my husband.

“What wasn’t I supposed to know?””

Daniel didn’t speak.

“Tell me.””

His jaw tightened.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“Sophie isn’t just someone I’m seeing.””

I waited.

“She’s my daughter’s mother.””

I stared at him.

The room stopped moving.

“What?””

Daniel looked down.

“Before we met…”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Before we met?””

He nodded.

“I had a child.””

My mind raced.

Lily.

Noah.

The children I had helped raise.

The children I had loved.

The children who knew their father had another woman.

“How long have you known?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

“Since the beginning.””

My eyes filled.

“The beginning of our marriage?””

He nodded.

I stepped back.

Twelve years.

Twelve years of secrets.

Twelve years of everyone knowing something I didn’t.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Sophie.

I stared at her name.

Daniel reached toward me.

“Emma, don’t.””

I opened it.

One sentence.

One photo.

And suddenly, I understood why everyone had been so afraid.

The photo showed Sophie holding a newborn baby.

The date was three months after Daniel and I got married.

Underneath it, Sophie had written:

*Ask Daniel who the baby really belongs to.*

I looked up slowly.

Because there was one thing Daniel had forgotten.

May you like

One person who knew the truth.

And that person was about to expose everything.
