Amused

Chapter 1: The Lie at Gate C17

“I got pulled into an emergency procedure,” Daniel whispered over the phone.

His voice carried the exact exhaustion I had spent twelve years learning to recognize.

The slow breathing. The quiet pauses between words. The faint sound of hospital machines humming in the background.

I almost apologized for calling.

I almost told him I was proud of him.

I almost thanked him for being the kind of man who ran toward emergencies while everyone else ran away.

Then I looked down from the second-floor balcony at O’Hare International Airport and saw my husband laughing with another woman.

The world did not collapse loudly.

There was no dramatic crash.

No warning.

No thunder.

Just one second where everything I believed was still alive.

And the next second where it wasn’t.

Daniel stood below me near Gate C17, wearing the navy jacket I had bought him for our twelfth anniversary.

I remembered the day I gave it to him.

He had opened the box at our kitchen table, laughed, and pulled me into a hug.

“You know you don’t have to keep proving you love me,” he had said.

I had smiled.

“Maybe I like reminding you.””

He kissed my forehead.

“I’ll wear this forever.””

Now he wore it while holding another woman’s hand.

She leaned against him like she belonged there.

Like she had done it a thousand times.

Like my entire marriage had been a room she was quietly living in while I was still paying the rent.

My fingers tightened around my phone.

Daniel was still on the line.

“Are you there?”” he asked.

I couldn’t answer.

My eyes were fixed on him.

On her.

On the matching boarding passes in their hands.

On the luggage lined up beside them.

On the people standing behind them.

His father, Robert.

His sister, Emily.

His two children from his first marriage, Lily and Noah.

All of them.

A family vacation.

A vacation I knew nothing about.

A vacation my husband was apparently too busy saving lives to mention.

“Emma?”” Daniel said.

My name sounded foreign coming from him.

I watched him look at the woman beside him.

She smiled.

He smiled back.

Then he reached up and touched her cheek.

A gesture I knew.

A gesture I thought belonged to me.

“Emma, I’m sorry,” he continued.

“The procedure came up suddenly. I might be stuck here all night.””

I finally found my voice.

“Daniel.””

The woman laughed at something he said.

My husband turned away from the crowd.

“Yes?””

I swallowed.

“What hospital are you at?””

There was a pause.

Only half a second.

But after twelve years with someone, you notice half a seconds.

“Mercy General.””

My stomach twisted.

Because I knew Mercy General.

I knew it because I had brought him coffee there during his overnight shifts.

I knew the layout.

I knew the parking lot.

I knew his coworkers.

And I knew something was wrong.

The airport announcement echoed above me.

“Passengers traveling on Flight 482 to Maui, please begin boarding at Gate C17.””

Maui.

My brain repeated the word.

Maui.

Daniel and I had talked about going there for years.

Every anniversary.

Every birthday.

Every time we saw a couple’s vacation photos online.

“One day,” he always said.

“One day when life slows down.””

I believed him.

I believed that one day we would sit on a beach together and laugh about how busy we used to be.

Instead, he was going there with someone else.

I ended the call without saying goodbye.

Daniel immediately looked at his phone.

I watched him.

He frowned.

Then he shrugged.

Like my silence was nothing.

Like losing me for a few seconds was less important than catching a flight.

The woman beside him noticed.

“What happened?”” she asked.

Daniel smiled.

“Nothing. Work stress.””

Work stress.

That was what I was now.

An inconvenience between him and his secret vacation.

I stepped away from the balcony.

My legs felt strangely calm.

That scared me.

I thought I would scream.

I thought I would run down those stairs and expose him in front of everyone.

I thought I would throw my wedding ring at his face.

But instead, I walked to a quiet corner near the airport windows and sat down.

I watched planes move across the runway.

People rushed around me carrying bags, children, coffee cups, and dreams.

Nobody knew my life had just changed.

Nobody knew that twelve years of marriage had disappeared between one phone call and one boarding announcement.

My phone buzzed.

Daniel.

I stared at his name.

A few minutes ago, seeing it would have made me smile.

Now it looked like a stranger’s number.

I answered.

“Hey,” he said softly.

“Sorry about hanging up earlier. Things got crazy.””

I looked back toward Gate C17.

He was still there.

Still laughing.

Still touching her.

“You sound upset,” he said.

I almost laughed.

Almost.

“Do I?””

“Yes.””

His voice became gentle.

The same voice he used when he wanted me to trust him.

“What happened?””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The question.

The perfect opening.

I could have said everything.

I could have asked why he was at an airport instead of a hospital.

I could have asked why his whole family was leaving without me.

I could have ended everything right there.

But something stopped me.

Not forgiveness.

Not love.

Something colder.

Understanding.

I wanted to know how long.

How long had they planned this?

How long had everyone known?

How many conversations had happened while I was sitting beside them?

How many lies had been told while I cooked dinner?

“I’m just tired,” I said.

Daniel relaxed.

“I know, baby. I’ll make it up to you.””

Baby.

The word almost hurt more than the betrayal.

“Sure,” I whispered.

“I love you.””

I looked down.

Below me, Daniel pulled the other woman closer.

Then he kissed her.

Right there.

In front of his family.

In front of strangers.

In front of the entire world except the one person who mattered.

Except me.

I watched his lips move.

“I love you too,” he said.

Not to me.

To her.

My phone screen went dark.

And for the first time in twelve years…

I felt nothing.

Then my phone lit up again.

This time, it wasn’t Daniel.

It was a message from an unknown number.

The photo attached made my blood freeze.

It was a picture of Daniel and the woman at the airport.

Taken from behind.

Taken only seconds earlier.

May you like

Underneath it were six words:

*You deserve to know who she is.*
