Chapter 9: The Man Who Was Buried Before He Died
Lucas stared at the photograph.
His mind struggled to understand what his eyes were showing him.
The person standing behind Lily was not a stranger.
Not an enemy he had never met.
Not someone hiding in the shadows.
It was someone whose face had been printed in family albums.
Someone whose name had been spoken in whispers for years.
His uncle.
Alexander Hale.
The man everyone believed had died twelve years ago.
The man his father had mourned.
The man whose funeral Lucas had attended as a teenager.
Lucas slowly looked up.
“That’s impossible.””
Emma took the phone from his hand and studied the image.
Her expression changed.
“No.””
Lucas looked at her.
“You know him?””
Emma nodded.
“I know who he is.””
“Who?””
Her voice was quiet.
“Your father’s older brother.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Alexander Hale.””
Lucas looked at him.
“You knew too?””
Marcus looked away.
“Yes.””
The answer cut deeper.
Again.
Lucas felt surrounded by people who had known his life was built on lies.
“You all knew he was alive.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
“Then explain this.””
Marcus looked at the photo.
“I thought he was dead.””
Lucas looked at Emma.
“And you?””
Emma’s face hardened.
“I knew he survived.””
The room went silent.
Lucas stared.
“How?””
Emma looked down.
“Because he found me before I found you.””
Lucas felt a chill.
“What does that mean?””
Emma took a breath.
“After my mother died, I spent years trying to understand why your father abandoned us.””
She looked at the photograph.
“I thought Daniel Hale was the villain.””
Lucas listened carefully.
“But then Alexander came to me.””
“When?””
“Six years ago.””
“What did he say?””
Emma’s expression became painful.
“He told me Daniel was responsible for everything.””
Lucas looked toward Richard.
“And you believed him?””
“At first.””
Lucas frowned.
“Then what changed?””
Emma looked at him.
“I discovered he was lying.””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“That’s what your father was afraid of.””
Lucas turned.
“What?””
Marcus looked at him.
“Alexander was always jealous of Daniel.””
“Because of the company?””
“Yes.””
Lucas shook his head.
“That doesn’t explain everything.””
“No.””
Marcus looked serious.
“Because Alexander didn’t just want Hale Global.””
Lucas waited.
“He wanted the Hale name.””
A silence followed.
Lucas thought about the years.
The family dinners.
The arguments.
The old stories.
His father always saying:
“Your uncle is complicated.””
Lucas had never understood what that meant.
Now he did.
“Where is he taking Lily?””
Nobody answered.
Lucas’s phone rang.
Everyone froze.
Unknown number.
Marcus immediately said:
“Don’t answer.””
Lucas looked at the screen.
“It’s him.””
He answered.
“Where is my daughter?””
A deep voice laughed softly.
“Still direct, Lucas.””
Lucas closed his eyes.
Hearing his uncle’s voice made everything real.
“Where is Lily?””
“She’s safe.””
“If you hurt her—”
“You misunderstand me.””
Alexander sounded calm.
“I don’t want to hurt Lily.””
“Then why take her?””
A pause.
“Because I needed you to listen.””
Lucas gripped the phone.
“You could have talked to me.””
“No.””
Alexander’s voice became colder.
“You were too protected.””
Lucas looked at Marcus.
“You mean everyone lied to me.””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
Lucas felt anger rise.
“Where are you?””
“You’ll find me.””
“Tell me.””
“No.””
Lucas’s voice hardened.
“Then I’ll find you.””
Alexander laughed.
“That’s exactly why I chose Lily.””
Lucas went silent.
“What?””
“Because she’s the only person who can make you stop thinking like a businessman.””
The words hurt because they were true.
Alexander continued.
“You built your life believing every problem could be solved with money, intelligence, or control.””
Lucas looked at his wheelchair.
“And you think kidnapping my daughter proves something?””
“No.””
Alexander sighed.
“It proves I know you.””
Lucas felt his jaw tighten.
“What do you want?””
“Your father’s hidden account.””
Lucas frowned.
“What?””
“The one containing the evidence.””
Emma immediately looked at him.
“The key.””
Lucas understood.
The key everyone had been searching for.
“The evidence against you.””
Alexander laughed.
“No.””
“Then what?””
“The evidence against Daniel.””
Lucas froze.
“You’re still blaming my father?””
“Because he was responsible.””
“No.””
Alexander’s voice became sharper.
“You don’t know him.””
Lucas looked at the phone.
“You’re right.””
A pause.
“I don’t.””
His voice lowered.
“But I know you took my daughter.””
Silence.
Then Alexander spoke.
“You sound like him.””
Lucas frowned.
“Like who?””
“Your father.””
The call became quiet.
Then Alexander said:
“He always chose people over the truth.””
Lucas felt something strange.
Not anger.
Something else.
Sadness.
Because for the first time, Alexander sounded less like a villain.
And more like someone carrying an old wound.
But Lucas refused to let that distract him.
“Where is Lily?””
“I’ll send you the location.””
“Why?””
“Because it’s time you saw what happened that night.””
“What night?””
“The night your mother died.””
The call ended.
Seconds later, a message arrived.
An address.
Emma looked at it.
Her face changed.
“No.””
Lucas looked at her.
“What?””
“That’s impossible.””
“What is it?””
She stared at the screen.
“That’s the old Hale estate.””
Marcus frowned.
“The property your grandfather owned?””
Emma nodded.
Lucas remembered.
The abandoned estate outside the city.
The place his family stopped visiting after his grandfather died.
The place everyone said held painful memories.
“Why would he take Lily there?””
Marcus answered quietly.
“Because that’s where everything started.””
Lucas looked at the address.
Then at Emma.
“Come with me.””
Emma hesitated.
“Lucas…”
“I need the truth.””
She nodded.
Marcus moved toward the door.
“We’ll take two vehicles.””
Lucas looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because if Alexander planned this, he expects us to come.””
“And?””
Marcus’s expression hardened.
“We don’t give him the advantage.””
The drive felt endless.
Nobody spoke much.
Lucas sat beside Lily’s empty seat in the car.
The silence reminded him of every morning she climbed beside him.
Every drawing she made.
Every time she told him he was the strongest person she knew.
And now she was somewhere with a man who had destroyed his family.
When they arrived at the old estate, the gates were already open.
That frightened Marcus.
“This is wrong.””
Lucas looked at him.
“What?””
“Someone wanted us to enter.””
They moved carefully through the property.
The house looked abandoned.
Broken windows.
Dust-covered furniture.
A place frozen in time.
Then they heard it.
A child crying.
Lucas’s heart stopped.
“Lily.””
He moved forward.
“Wait,” Marcus warned.
But Lucas was already inside.
“Lily!””
The sound came from the old dining room.
The door opened.
And there she was.
His daughter.
Sitting in a chair.
Unharmed.
Crying.
Lucas rushed toward her.
“Daddy!””
He held her tightly.
“I’m here.””
Lily buried her face against him.
“He said you would come.””
Lucas looked up.
“Who?””
Before she answered, a voice came from behind him.
“I knew you would.””
Lucas turned.
Alexander Hale stood in the doorway.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
The man who had haunted their family’s history.
The man who had been missing for twelve years.
Lucas stared.
“Why?””
Alexander looked at Lily.
Then at Lucas.
“Because you deserve to know what your father did.””
Lucas stood between his daughter and his uncle.
“You have five seconds to explain before I call the police.””
Alexander smiled sadly.
“You still sound like him.””
Lucas’s anger rose.
“Stop saying that.””
Alexander looked around the old room.
“This is where your mother discovered the truth.””
Emma stepped forward.
“What truth?””
Alexander looked at her.
“The truth that Daniel Hale wasn’t trying to save this family.””
He paused.
“He was trying to save himself.””
Lucas shook his head.
“You’re lying.””
Alexander reached into his coat.
He pulled out an old file.
“I knew you would say that.””
He placed it on the table.
Lucas looked down.
The first page had his mother’s handwriting.
His heart stopped.
Because he recognized it.
Alexander whispered:
“Your mother wrote this the night before she died.””
Lucas opened the file.
And read the first line.
*“If anything happens to me, Daniel is responsible.””*
The room went silent.
Emma looked shocked.
Marcus stepped closer.
Lucas stared at the words.
His entire world shifted again.
Then Alexander said:
“Now you understand why your father wanted the truth buried.””
Lucas looked up.
“Why?””
Alexander’s face became cold.
“Because your father killed your mother.””
And behind him, from the darkness of the hallway, another voice spoke.
A voice Lucas knew.
A voice that made everyone turn.
“Not again, Alexander.””
Lucas froze.
Because standing there was the man he thought was dead.
His father.
Daniel Hale.
Alive.
And looking directly at his brother.
“After twelve years…”
May you like
Daniel said quietly.
“…you’re still telling the same lie.””
