Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Locked Cabinet
Lucas stared at the sentence until the words stopped looking like words.
*“Final stage: wait until the inheritance transfer is complete.””*
His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.
The mansion around him suddenly felt unfamiliar.
The expensive furniture.
The polished marble floors.
The photographs hanging on the walls.
Everything that had once represented his success now felt like a carefully designed stage where someone had been pretending.
Vanessa stood frozen near the kitchen entrance.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Marcus folded the paper and placed it carefully on the table.
“Mr. Hale,” he said quietly, “we need to secure everything in this room.””
Lucas didn’t look away from Vanessa.
“Did you know about this?””
Marcus understood the question immediately.
“No.””
Lucas nodded slowly.
But his eyes remained fixed on Vanessa.
“Not you.””
Vanessa’s lips parted.
“Lucas…”
“I asked her.””
The softness was gone from his voice.
The woman who had spent months telling him she loved him suddenly looked like a stranger.
Vanessa took a step forward.
“You have to listen to me.””
Lucas laughed once.
A quiet, broken sound.
“Do I?””
“Yes.””
She looked around the room.
“At least let me explain.””
Lily moved closer to her father.
Lucas noticed.
His daughter was afraid of Vanessa.
That realization hurt more than anything else.
A child who usually ran toward everyone was now hiding behind his wheelchair.
Lucas placed a hand gently on Lily’s shoulder.
“Stay with me.””
Lily nodded.
Vanessa saw the gesture.
And something changed in her expression.
A flash of anger crossed her face.
“You’re really going to believe this?””
Lucas stared at her.
“I’m looking at evidence.””
“You’re looking at paper!””
“Paper with my name on it.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
Because she had no answer.
Marcus motioned to the security officers.
“Take photos of everything. Nobody touches anything until we know exactly what we’re dealing with.””
Vanessa suddenly turned toward him.
“You don’t have authority over this house.””
Marcus looked at her calmly.
“I work for Mr. Hale.””
She looked back at Lucas.
“Lucas, tell him to stop.””
Lucas said nothing.
That silence was the answer.
Marcus continued searching the cabinet.
A few minutes later, one of the officers found a small black notebook hidden behind the bottles.
“Mr. Reed.””
Marcus took it.
The cover was worn.
No label.
No name.
He opened the first page.
His eyebrows tightened.
“What is it?”” Lucas asked.
Marcus looked up.
“Records.””
“Of what?””
Marcus hesitated.
Then he walked over and handed the notebook to Lucas.
The handwriting was neat.
Organized.
Almost professional.
Dates.
Times.
Symptoms.
Dosages.
Lucas read the first entry.
*March 14. Increased medication. Patient reported extreme fatigue.*
The next one.
*March 22. Patient unable to walk without assistance. Continue monitoring.*
The next.
*April 3. Physical decline progressing as expected.*
Lucas’s breathing became heavier.
Expected.
That word echoed in his mind.
His decline hadn’t been unexpected.
Someone had been watching it happen.
Someone had been planning it.
He turned another page.
Then another.
Every entry described his worsening condition.
Every entry matched the timeline of when Vanessa began controlling his medication.
Lucas looked up.
“Why?””
The question was not directed at anyone.
Maybe it was directed at the universe.
Maybe at himself.
How had he missed this?
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Lucas, please.””
He looked at her.
“Tell me I’m wrong.””
She remained silent.
“Tell me this isn’t yours.””
Silence.
“Tell me you didn’t write these.””
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
But Lucas had spent years negotiating with people who tried to manipulate him.
He knew the difference between regret and fear.
Vanessa wasn’t crying because she had hurt him.
She was crying because she had been caught.
“I didn’t want it to happen like this,” she whispered.
The room went still.
Marcus looked at Lucas.
Lily covered her mouth.
Lucas felt something inside him break.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked down.
“I never wanted you to find out this way.””
Lucas stared at her.
“Find out what?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her shoulders shook.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
For the first time, Vanessa’s voice became desperate.
“You think you know everything about me. You think I came into your life because I loved your money.””
Lucas said nothing.
“But you don’t know what I sacrificed.””
Marcus frowned.
“Sacrificed?””
Vanessa ignored him.
“I was there when nobody else was.””
Lucas’s expression hardened.
“You were there because you were the one making me sick.””
“No!””
The shout echoed through the room.
Lily flinched.
Vanessa immediately lowered her voice.
“I didn’t poison you.””
Lucas looked at the cabinet.
“Then what did you do?””
She looked away.
That answer was enough.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Mr. Hale, we should call the police.””
Vanessa’s face changed instantly.
“No.””
Lucas noticed.
Again.
That reaction.
Not confusion.
Not innocence.
Fear.
“Why are you afraid of the police?”” he asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
“I’m not.””
“You just said no before anyone mentioned what happened.””
She froze.
Lucas leaned back in his wheelchair.
Every movement was painful now.
But somehow, he felt stronger than he had in months.
“Who are you?””
Vanessa looked at him.
The question seemed to hurt her.
“I’m the woman who loved you.””
Lucas stared at her.
“No.””
His voice was quiet.
“You’re the woman who studied me.””
Vanessa looked away.
And that was when Lucas noticed something else.
The notebook.
The dates.
The records.
They started long before Vanessa moved into his mansion.
His eyes narrowed.
“When did this begin?””
Vanessa didn’t respond.
“Answer me.””
She remained silent.
Marcus flipped through the pages.
“Mr. Hale.””
Lucas looked at him.
Marcus held up the notebook.
“There are entries from eighteen months ago.””
Lucas’s face changed.
Eighteen months.
That was before Vanessa became his fiancée.
Before she started managing his medication.
Before she told him they had a future together.
“Impossible,” Lucas whispered.
Marcus looked at the page.
“It’s here.””
Lucas looked at Vanessa.
“You knew me before you met me.””
Vanessa’s silence confirmed it.
Lily looked confused.
“Daddy…”
Lucas looked down at his daughter.
“It’s okay.””
But it wasn’t.
Nothing was okay.
Because suddenly, every memory had a question attached to it.
The first time Vanessa appeared at his company event.
The night she comforted him after his diagnosis.
The moment she told him she wanted to build a life with him.
Were those moments real?
Or were they carefully planned?
Lucas turned back toward her.
“Who sent you?””
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
“No one.””
“Then why were you tracking my health before we were together?””
“I wasn’t.””
Marcus held up the notebook.
“Your handwriting is on every page.””
Vanessa looked at the notebook.
Then at Lucas.
Her expression changed.
The fear disappeared.
Something colder replaced it.
“You really think you’ve figured everything out?””
Lucas felt a chill.
Because that was not the voice of a woman who had been exposed.
That was the voice of someone who still believed she had control.
“What does that mean?”” Lucas asked.
Vanessa slowly wiped the tears from her face.
“You’re angry because you think I betrayed you.””
Lucas stared at her.
“You did.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
A strange calm returned to her.
“You don’t even know the truth about your own family.””
Lucas’s eyes narrowed.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa looked toward Lily.
Then back at him.
“The reason I came into your life wasn’t because of your inheritance.””
She paused.
“It was because of something your father did before he died.””
Lucas went completely still.
His father had been dead for twelve years.
And there was one thing everyone knew about him.
He had left behind a spotless reputation.
A successful company.
A loving family.
No scandals.
No secrets.
At least, that was what Lucas had believed.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You want to know why I had access to your medication?””
Lucas didn’t answer.
“You want to know why I knew your condition would get worse?””
Her eyes locked onto his.
“Because I wasn’t the only person watching you.””
Marcus immediately moved between them.
But Lucas raised a hand.
“Let her talk.””
Vanessa smiled faintly.
Not happily.
Almost sadly.
“You think I’m your enemy.””
She looked at the notebook.
“But I’m the only person who knows what really happened.””
Lucas felt his heartbeat quicken.
“What happened?””
Vanessa reached into her purse.
Slowly.
Everyone tensed.
But instead of a weapon, she pulled out an old photograph.
She placed it on the table.
Lucas looked down.
And the moment he saw it, his face lost all color.
Because the photograph showed his father standing beside a woman Lucas had never seen before.
A woman holding a baby.
And written on the back of the photograph were five words:
*“The child your father abandoned.””*
Lucas looked up.
“Who is she?””
Vanessa stared at him.
May you like
Then whispered:
“She’s your sister.””
