Chapter 9: The Final Evidence

I spent the entire night trying to understand the bank records.

The numbers didn’t make sense.

My father had never been wealthy.

So why was there a transfer connected to Claire?

The next morning, I called Linda.

“I need answers.””

She sounded nervous.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t find that yet.””

“Why?””

“Because it changes everything.””

I met her within an hour.

She brought another folder.

“This is everything I found.””

I opened it.

Inside were records from years ago.

Emails.

Transactions.

Documents.

Then I saw it.

Claire had contacted my father before she met me.

Not casually.

Repeatedly.

“She knew about your family’s finances before the relationship began,” Linda said.

I stared at the papers.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

“Because your father asked people not to.””

“Why?””

“Because he wanted to handle it himself.””

I closed my eyes.

My father had tried.

He had seen something wrong.

But he had been too late.

When I returned home, I found Claire waiting.

She stood in the living room.

“You’re investigating me.””

I didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

She smiled sadly.

“I can’t believe you.””

I looked at her.

“You’re angry because I found the truth.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I’m angry because you never trusted me.””

I stared at her.

“You lied.””

She stepped closer.

“I was trying to build a future.””

“By taking my mother’s house?””

“By protecting us.””

I laughed.

“Us?””

“Yes.””

Her voice became emotional.

“Do you know how hard it is being married to someone whose mother always comes first?””

I looked at her.

“My mother washed your dishes because she wanted to help.””

“She wanted control.””

“No.””

“She made you feel guilty.””

“No.””

The room went silent.

Then Claire said:

“You’re choosing her.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

Her face changed.

And finally, I saw it.

Not sadness.

Not heartbreak.

Anger.

Pure anger.

“You’ll regret this.””

I pulled out my phone.

“I recorded our conversation.””

Her expression changed.

“What?””

“I also have the documents.””

For the first time, Claire looked afraid.

“You wouldn’t.””

“I would.””

She stepped back.

“You think this proves everything?””

“It proves enough.””

She grabbed her coat.

“You have no idea what I’m capable of.””

I watched her leave.

And for the first time in months, I felt something I hadn’t felt.

Relief.

But I knew it wasn’t over.

Because Claire wasn’t someone who walked away quietly.

Three days later, I received a letter.

A legal notice.

Claire had filed a claim.

She was accusing my mother of manipulating family assets.

I read the document twice.

Then I noticed the signature.

The person who filed the complaint wasn’t Claire.

It was someone else.

Someone I knew.

Someone I never expected.

My mother saw the paper.

Her face went pale.

“Daniel…”

“Who is this?””

She whispered:

“That’s your uncle.””

I froze.

“My uncle?””

My mother nodded.

“He’s the reason your father lost that money years ago.””

The room went silent.

And suddenly, I understood.

May you like

Claire hadn’t created the trap alone.

She had found someone who already knew where the cracks were.
