Chapter 4: The Paper She Hid
I didn’t sleep that night.
The photo stayed on my phone.
Claire inside my mother’s room.
Holding papers.
My mother had never mentioned any document.
Not once.
The next morning, I went straight to my mother.
“Mom, did Claire ever ask you to sign anything?””
Her face went pale.
That was all the answer I needed.
“Mom.””
She looked away.
“Daniel…”
“What did she ask you to sign?””
My mother’s hands began shaking.
“I didn’t think it mattered.””
“Please.””
She swallowed.
“It was a few months ago.””
I sat down.
“Tell me everything.””
She looked embarrassed.
“Claire said it was just paperwork for the house.””
My stomach dropped.
“The house?””
My father had left the house to my mother.
It was the one place she always said she would never leave.
“What kind of paperwork?””
“I don’t know.””
“You signed something you didn’t read?””
She looked ashamed.
“She said you already knew about it.””
I closed my eyes.
Claire had used my name.
She had convinced my mother that I approved.
“Mom, where is the paperwork?””
“I don’t know.””
That afternoon, I searched through every drawer in the house.
Bills.
Receipts.
Medical records.
Then I found an envelope hidden behind old family documents.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a legal form.
My eyes moved across the page.
And I felt the room spin.
It was a transfer document.
Not complete.
Not yet.
But it gave Claire power to make decisions regarding the property.
I heard footsteps behind me.
My mother.
“Oh no.””
She covered her mouth.
I turned around.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Because she said you would be angry with me.””
I stared at her.
“She blamed you?””
My mother nodded.
“She said I was causing problems in your marriage.””
I felt something break inside.
That evening, Claire came home.
She looked at the papers on the table.
Then she stopped.
“You went through my things?””
I stood up.
“No.””
I held up the document.
“I found what you were hiding.””
Her expression changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She stayed silent.
“Explain why you needed my mother to sign this.””
“It wasn’t like that.””
“Then what was it?””
She walked closer.
“You’re being dramatic.””
I stared at her.
“That’s your answer?””
She looked angry now.
“You always choose your mother.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I chose my mother when you didn’t.””
The silence between us was brutal.
Then Claire said something I would never forget.
“She’s old, Daniel. People like her don’t need control over everything anymore.””
My blood ran cold.
“People like her?””
Claire realized too late what she had said.
I stepped back.
“You don’t see her as a person.””
She looked away.
And that was confirmation.
I packed a bag that night.
Not hers.
Mine.
My mother watched silently.
“Where are you going?””
I looked at her.
“Somewhere I can think.””
But before I reached the door, my phone rang.
It was Linda.
I answered immediately.
“Daniel, you need to listen carefully.””
“What happened?””
Her voice was shaking.
“I found out why Claire wanted your mother’s signature.””
I gripped the phone.
“Why?””
A pause.
May you like
Then Linda whispered:
“Because Claire wasn’t planning to stay married to you.””
