Chapter 5: The Truth Behind the Smile
I met Linda again the next morning.
This time, she brought more than documents.
She brought a truth I wasn’t ready to hear.
“She had a plan,” Linda said.
I stared at the papers in front of me.
“A plan for what?””
Linda looked uncomfortable.
“For leaving.””
I felt strangely calm.
Sometimes the worst pain doesn’t arrive as a shock.
It arrives as a confirmation.
“She wanted the house,” Linda continued.
“And she wanted financial security.””
I looked down.
“All this time…”
“She built an image,” Linda said.
“The perfect wife. The caring daughter-in-law. The person everyone trusted.””
I remembered every family dinner.
Every smile.
Every hug.
How many of those moments were real?
When I returned home, my mother was sitting in the garden.
She looked peaceful.
Too peaceful.
“Mom.””
She smiled.
“Did you find answers?””
I sat beside her.
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
“Are you okay?””
I almost laughed.
She was asking if I was okay.
After everything.
“I should have protected you.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“I brought someone into this family who hurt you.””
My mother reached for my hand.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I did.
“Love is not proven when everything is easy.””
Her voice trembled.
“It is proven when someone gives you a reason to walk away, and you choose to do what is right.””
I looked at the woman beside me.
The woman who had spent her whole life choosing me.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Claire.
“I know you talked to Linda.””
My heart stopped.
Another message appeared.
“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””
Then a third.
“Ask your mother what she did ten years ago.””
I stared at the screen.
My mother noticed my expression.
“What is it?””
I didn’t answer.
Because suddenly, I had another question.
Why would Claire bring up something from ten years ago?
What secret was my mother hiding?
I looked at my mother.
And for the first time in days, I wondered if Claire’s cruel words had contained one small piece of truth.
“Mom,” I said quietly.
She looked at me.
May you like
“What happened ten years ago?””
