Amused

Chapter 7: The Truth Written Before I Was Born

I held the letter with both hands.

My mother stood a few feet away, crying silently. Vanessa watched me with an expression I couldn't read, while my father sat frozen beside the desk.

Nobody tried to take the letter from me.

Nobody dared.

I looked down at the words again.

Dear Maya,

If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.

There is something about your birth that I never told you.

Daniel Carter is not your biological father.

I stopped reading.

The words seemed to move across the page.

I blinked.

Then I read them again.

Daniel Carter is not your biological father.

I lifted my head slowly.

“But the birth certificate…”

My mother closed her eyes.

“The certificate was changed.””

I stared at her.

“Changed by who?””

“Vanessa and Daniel.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“That is a lie.””

My mother turned toward her.

“Then explain the laboratory report.””

For the first time since the letter had been opened, Vanessa had nothing to say.

My father stood up.

“Angela, what are you telling her?””

My mother wiped her cheeks.

“The truth.””

She looked at me.

“The man on that certificate was your legal father. When you were born, I was still married to Daniel. Everyone assumed the baby was his, and he encouraged that assumption.””

“Why?”” I asked.

“Because Daniel wanted an heir.””

She paused.

“But there was a problem. He had known for years that he might not be able to have children.””

My father looked at the floor.

I turned toward him.

“Why do you look like you already know this?””

He didn't answer.

My mother looked at him, too.

And suddenly, I realized this wasn't the first time they had discussed my birth.

“Dad?””

He swallowed.

“Maya, please read the rest.””

I looked back at the letter.

The man who raised you knows more about your birth than he has ever admitted.

My fingers went cold.

He was there before you were born. He loved you before he knew whether you would ever call him Dad.

And when Daniel discovered the truth, he made a promise to destroy everyone who had helped me.

The next sentence was underlined.

Your biological father is Robert Brooks.

I looked up.

My father stood so abruptly that his chair scraped across the floor.

My mother covered her mouth.

Vanessa's expression changed from defiance to something close to panic.

I stared at Robert.

My father.

The man who had packed my lunches, attended my elementary school concerts, and taught me how to ride a bicycle.

The man who had watched Vanessa tear my mother's name card apart.

The man who had stood silently while I wondered why my mother had abandoned me.

“You're my biological father?””

He looked at me.

Tears were running down his face.

“Yes.””

One word.

One devastating word.

I backed away from the desk.

“No.””

“Maya—”

“No!””

My voice echoed through the classroom.

I shook my head, gripping the letter.

“You let me discover that my mother was alive in front of hundreds of people. Now I'm discovering that the man I thought was my biological father isn't even the man who made me?””

“I am your father,” Robert said desperately.

“You just admitted it.””

“I know.””

“You knew all this time?””

He took a step toward me.

I stepped back.

“Don't.””

He stopped.

For a moment, none of us moved.

Then my mother spoke.

“Robert didn't know at first.””

I turned toward her.

“Please don't protect him anymore.””

She flinched.

I hated that my words hurt her.

But I couldn't stop.

“I spent ten years defending him. I spent ten years believing he was the only parent who hadn't abandoned me.””

My voice broke.

“And all this time, he knew you didn't leave voluntarily.””

My father bowed his head.

“I knew you had been threatened. I knew Daniel was dangerous. I didn't know Vanessa had helped him arrange everything.””

“You knew enough to do something.””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

That answer hurt because it was honest.

And because it was all I had wanted from him.

The truth.

My mother approached slowly.

“Maya, your father and I fell in love before you were born. I was still trapped in my marriage to Daniel. I had already started planning how to leave him.””

She paused.

“When I found out I was pregnant, I told Robert the truth. Daniel eventually discovered our relationship. He threatened to use his family's money and influence to take you away from me before you were even born.””

“So you let him put his name on the birth certificate?””

“I thought it would protect you.””

“Did it?””

She looked down.

“No.””

The answer was barely a whisper.

I stared at both of them.

They had made decisions about my life before I had even opened my eyes.

Then they had made more decisions while I was growing up.

And every decision had supposedly been for my protection.

I was beginning to hate that phrase.

For your protection.

It was what people said when they wanted to make their cowardice sound like love.

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

“You're all making this sound like a tragedy.””

I turned toward her.

She straightened her red dress and lifted her chin.

“Your mother had an affair. Robert helped her deceive her husband. Daniel found out. And everyone wants to pretend they're innocent.””

My mother took one step forward.

“No one has claimed to be innocent.””

“Really?”” Vanessa snapped.

“Because Angela has spent years pretending she was the perfect mother.””

My mother stood still.

Vanessa pointed toward the letter.

“She left you with a man she knew was afraid of Daniel. She knew what kind of family you were born into, and she still thought love would be enough.””

I wanted to tell Vanessa to shut up.

But the words wouldn't come.

Because there was a piece of truth buried inside her cruelty.

My mother had made mistakes.

My father had made mistakes.

And I had been the person paying for them.

Vanessa saw my hesitation and stepped closer.

“Now you understand why Daniel's family wanted you.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She glanced toward the file.

“The trust fund.””

My father moved between us.

“Don't.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“Your grandfather established a trust for Daniel's legitimate heir. Once it became clear Daniel might not have a biological child, the entire arrangement became complicated.””

She looked directly at me.

“But Daniel knew the truth about you. If you weren't his daughter, his family's lawyers could challenge your claim to the money.””

My mother shook her head.

“The trust was never the reason she was born.””

“No, but it was the reason everyone wanted control of her.””

Vanessa's voice sharpened.

“Daniel wanted an heir. His family wanted its money protected. I wanted to make sure my brother's wishes were respected.””

“Your brother?”” I repeated.

She paused.

Then she corrected herself.

“My brother's interests.””

It was a small slip.

But I heard it.

My father did, too.

“You said Daniel was your brother.””

Vanessa's face hardened.

“He was.””

The room fell silent.

Then she looked at me.

“And he is still your legal father, whether you like it or not.””

I held up the letter.

“Not for long.””

Her expression changed.

My mother reached into her bag and removed a folded laboratory report.

“I kept the original.””

Vanessa stared at it.

“You shouldn't have that.””

“I have a great many things you thought you destroyed.””

My mother placed the report on the desk.

It contained three names, a date, and the results of a paternity test conducted before I was born.

Robert Brooks: biological father.

Daniel Carter: excluded.

A second page showed the signatures authorizing the examination.

One belonged to a physician.

One belonged to my mother.

The final signature belonged to Vanessa.

I looked at her.

“You knew.””

She said nothing.

“You knew before I was born.””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

Then she reached for the report.

My mother snatched it away.

“Don't touch it.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely frightened.

Because the report didn't just reveal a family secret.

It proved she had known about it when she helped arrange my guardianship.

And if she had known the truth about my birth, then every document she had signed afterward could be questioned.

My father stared at the report.

“Where did you get this?””

My mother answered quietly.

“From the only doctor who refused to help Daniel bury the truth.””

“Where is he now?””

She looked toward the window.

“He died three years ago.””

Vanessa exhaled.

Relief flashed across her face.

But my mother wasn't finished.

“He gave a copy to his daughter.””

Vanessa froze again.

My mother's phone vibrated.

She checked the screen, and her expression changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

She showed me the message.

It came from an unknown number.

*Dr. Ellis's daughter is ready to testify. But she says she won't meet Angela. She wants to speak to Maya alone.*

I looked at my mother.

Then at my father.

For the first time that day, I understood that the truth wasn't simply something my parents had hidden.

May you like

It was something other people had been forced to carry, too.

And one of them was finally ready to tell me what happened before I was born.
