Chapter 5: The Recording That Changed Everything

The voice filled the classroom.

My mother’s voice.

The voice I had spent ten years wanting to hear.

The voice I had defended even when everyone told me I was wrong.

And now it was saying something impossible.

“I don’t want Maya anymore.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The recording continued.

“I can’t be her mother.””

My mother covered her mouth.

“No.””

Her face went pale.

“No, that’s not…”

Vanessa smiled.

Not happily.

Like someone watching a plan finally work.

“There it is.””

I looked at Angela.

My heart was breaking.

“Mom?””

She looked at me immediately.

“Maya, listen to me.””

But I stepped back.

Because for the first time since she came through those doors…

I felt afraid.

“Did you say that?””

“No.””

Her answer came instantly.

“No.””

Vanessa lifted her phone.

“I have the recording.””

My father stared at the device.

“Where did you get that?””

Vanessa ignored him.

She looked at me.

“You spent years believing your mother was some kind of victim.””

She shook her head.

“But you never knew what really happened.””

My mother’s voice shook.

“Vanessa, stop.””

“Why?””

Vanessa laughed softly.

“Because she’s finally hearing the truth?””

I looked between them.

“What truth?””

Nobody answered.

The silence was unbearable.

Then my mother stepped forward.

“Maya, the recording is real.””

My stomach dropped.

She continued quickly.

“But it’s not what you think.””

I wanted to believe her.

I wanted to.

But my entire life had been built on wanting to believe people.

And look where that got me.

“What does it mean?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“It was taken out of context.””

Vanessa immediately laughed.

“Of course.””

My mother turned.

“You know exactly what happened.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

For the first time, she looked almost nervous.

I noticed.

And so did my father.

“Play the entire recording,” he said.

Vanessa looked at him.

“No.””

“Why not?””

She didn’t answer.

My father stepped closer.

“Because you know there’s more.””

The room became silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Play it.””

She hesitated.

That hesitation told me everything.

“Play it.””

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

Then she pressed another button.

The recording continued.

The same room.

The same conversation.

But now there were other voices.

My mother sounded exhausted.

Broken.

“I don’t want Maya anymore.””

A man’s voice responded.

“You need to say it clearly.””

My blood ran cold.

Who was that?

My mother’s voice cracked.

“I don’t want Maya anymore.””

The man replied:

“Good. Now say you’re leaving willingly.””

A pause.

Then my mother whispered:

“I’m leaving willingly.””

I stared at the phone.

The room spun.

My mother began crying.

“Maya…”

But I couldn’t look at her.

Because I understood.

Someone had forced those words out of her.

Someone had created the recording.

“Who was that man?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

Then my father quietly said:

“Daniel.””

The name hit me.

My biological father.

The man I had never known.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

My father looked at her.

“I know exactly what happened.””

My mother looked at him.

“You knew?””

His expression collapsed.

“I found out later.””

“Later?””

Her voice became sharp.

“You knew Daniel threatened me?””

My father looked ashamed.

“I thought he was gone.””

“And Vanessa?””

Silence.

My father looked at her.

“I didn’t know she was involved.””

Vanessa scoffed.

“Don’t act innocent now.””

My father stared.

“You knew where Angela was.””

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

The accusation hung between them.

I looked at my father.

“What happened after she disappeared?””

He took a long breath.

“She went into hiding.””

My mother nodded.

“Because Daniel threatened to take Maya away.””

I whispered:

“So you both knew?””

My mother reached for me.

“I tried to come back.””

“When?””

“Many times.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Her eyes filled.

“Because every time I got close, someone stopped me.””

My father looked at Vanessa.

And I finally saw it.

The guilt.

He had known pieces of the truth.

Maybe not all of it.

But enough.

“You let me hate her.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“You let me think my mother abandoned me.””

“I was wrong.””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You were scared.””

He had no answer.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Maya, don’t let them manipulate you.””

I looked at her.

“Manipulate me?””

She nodded.

“Your mother is emotional. Your father is guilty. They’ll say anything to make themselves look better.””

I stared at her.

“You just admitted you knew my mother was alive.””

Her mouth closed.

That was enough.

My mother walked toward me slowly.

“I know you don’t have to forgive me.””

I looked at her.

“I don’t even know what to believe.””

She nodded.

“I understand.””

That hurt.

Because she didn’t fight.

She didn’t demand forgiveness.

She just stood there.

Like someone who had already lost so much.

Then my father’s phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

He checked the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

He answered.

“Hello?””

A few seconds passed.

Then his expression turned into pure fear.

“What do you mean he escaped?””

My blood went cold.

Vanessa suddenly looked nervous.

My father lowered the phone.

Slowly.

“Who escaped?”” I asked.

He didn’t answer.

My mother looked at him.

“Michael.””

The name meant nothing to me.

Until my father said:

“Daniel’s lawyer.””

Everyone froze.

“What does he want?”” Vanessa asked.

My father looked at me.

“He found out Angela came back.””

The classroom suddenly felt too small.

“And?””

My father’s voice dropped.

“He said if Maya knows the rest of the story…”

He stopped.

I stepped closer.

“Knows what?””

My father looked terrified.

“He said she’ll finally learn why Daniel disappeared.””

My mother grabbed my arm.

“Maya.””

The fear in her voice scared me more than anything else.

Because my mother had spent ten years fighting to return to me.

And now she looked like she was afraid I would discover the truth.

The classroom lights flickered.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

I opened it.

May you like

And my heart stopped.

*I know what your mother did the night she disappeared. Ask her about the car accident.*
