Amused

Chapter 6: The Night Everyone Lied About

I stared at the message until the words blurred.

My mother noticed my expression.

“What happened?””

I didn’t answer.

I couldn’t.

My fingers felt numb as I handed her my phone.

She read the message.

And the color disappeared from her face.

“Who sent this?””

My father looked over her shoulder.

His jaw tightened.

“Michael.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped backward.

I saw it.

A tiny movement.

But I saw it.

“You know him,” I said.

Vanessa looked at me.

“No.””

Too fast.

Too defensive.

“You do know him.””

“I said no.””

My mother’s voice was quiet.

“You always were a terrible liar when you were scared.””

Vanessa glared at her.

“You don’t know me anymore.””

Angela looked at her.

“I knew you before you became this.””

Nobody spoke.

The graduation hall outside was almost empty now.

The celebration was gone.

The music had stopped.

The decorations still hung on the walls, bright and cheerful.

A cruel reminder that my life had changed on a day that was supposed to be perfect.

I walked toward the window.

Outside, students were taking pictures.

Families were hugging.

People were celebrating futures.

And I was standing inside a room full of people who had stolen my past.

“Tell me about the accident.””

My voice was quiet.

Everyone heard it.

My mother looked at me.

“Maya…”

“Tell me.””

She sat down.

Slowly.

Like she had been waiting for this moment.

“The night I disappeared, I was driving home.””

She took a breath.

“I had just picked you up from school.””

My heart stopped.

“I thought you were coming home with me?””

She nodded.

“You were.””

My eyes filled.

“But I never saw you.””

“No.””

She looked down.

“Because before I reached your school, another car hit mine.””

The room was silent.

“Daniel?””

She nodded.

“He wanted me to sign documents.””

“What documents?””

“Documents saying I was giving up custody.””

I felt sick.

“And you refused.””

“Yes.””

Her hands trembled.

“So he followed me.””

My father interrupted.

“I didn’t know any of this.””

My mother looked at him.

“You knew enough.””

He lowered his head.

She continued.

“The crash wasn’t an accident.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

My mother looked at me.

“He tried to make it look like one.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s impossible.””

My mother looked at her.

“You know it isn’t.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why are you defending him?””

She looked away.

And again…

That was the answer.

My father opened the file again.

“There’s something else.””

I stared.

“What else could there be?””

He pulled out a photograph.

It showed a car.

Destroyed.

Burn marks across the front.

“The police report was changed.””

My mother nodded.

“Because someone paid them.””

I looked at my father.

“And you?””

His face tightened.

“I found out years later.””

“Years?””

He closed his eyes.

“I was told Angela left voluntarily.””

My mother whispered:

“You believed it.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

The pain in his voice almost made me angry.

Because regret was easy.

Living with the consequences wasn’t.

Then Vanessa suddenly laughed.

Everyone looked at her.

Not a happy laugh.

A broken one.

“You all act like you’re innocent.””

My mother stared.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You think Angela is the only one who suffered?””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I lost everything too.””

I almost couldn’t believe it.

“You stole my mother from me.””

Her eyes hardened.

“I saved you.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked desperate.

“Daniel wasn’t just dangerous because of what he did to Angela.””

She looked at my mother.

“He was dangerous because he knew things.””

My mother went still.

“What things?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

My father did.

“He knew about the money.””

I looked at him.

“What money?””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father opened the last section of the file.

Inside were financial records.

My name appeared repeatedly.

My eyes widened.

“What is this?””

My father whispered:

“A trust fund.””

I looked at him.

“For me?””

He nodded.

“Created by your grandfather before you were born.””

My mother explained:

“Daniel wanted access to it.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“And you?””

Her face changed.

Because she knew there was no hiding anymore.

“I wanted to protect it.””

I stared.

“You destroyed my family for money?””

Her eyes filled with anger.

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“I destroyed your family because Daniel would have destroyed you.””

The room went quiet.

That was the first time Vanessa sounded like she believed herself.

My mother shook her head.

“You manipulated a child.””

“I kept her alive.””

“You kept her away from her mother.””

“Because her mother disappeared!””

My mother’s face broke.

“I was forced.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“And you think she’s telling you everything?””

I froze.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small envelope.

My mother immediately reacted.

“Where did you get that?””

Vanessa smiled.

“I found it after the accident.””

My mother’s face went pale.

“No.””

“What is it?”” I asked.

Vanessa held it out.

“A letter.””

She looked directly at me.

“From your mother.””

My heart pounded.

My mother whispered:

“Maya, don’t.””

But I took it.

The envelope was old.

My name was written on the front.

My mother’s handwriting.

I opened it with shaking hands.

The first line made my entire body freeze.

*Dear Maya,*

*If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you.*

I looked up.

My mother was crying.

“What did you write?””

She didn’t answer.

I continued reading.

The next sentence destroyed everything I thought I knew.

*There is something about your birth that I never told you.*

I looked at my mother.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at the letter.

Because the secret I had spent my whole life searching for…

May you like

wasn’t about why my mother left.

It was about why she had been afraid to come back.
