Amused

Chapter 9: The Last Secret

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa’s words stayed in the room like smoke.

“She was investigating him.””

My eyes moved to my father.

He looked devastated.

Not angry.

Not surprised.

Just tired.

Like he had been carrying something heavy for years.

“Explain,” I whispered.

Vanessa looked at Dad.

“You tell her.””

He didn’t answer.

So she continued.

“Your father lied about the day your mother died.””

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

Dad’s voice was barely audible.

“Vanessa.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“She deserves to know.””

I shook my head.

“No. Tell me this isn’t true.””

Dad closed his eyes.

And that was when I knew.

There was something.

Something real.

“Dad?””

He sat down.

“I didn’t kill your mother.””

The words shocked me.

Because I had never considered that.

Not once.

But the fact that he said it meant someone had suspected it.

“What happened?””

Dad looked at his hands.

“Your mother and I argued the night before the accident.””

I swallowed.

“About what?””

“About Vanessa.””

The room went silent.

Dad continued.

“She discovered Vanessa and Richard were trying to access your trust.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

A tiny flicker of fear.

Dad noticed.

“You thought I didn’t know.””

“You didn’t know everything.””

“But I knew enough.””

I looked between them.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Dad’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because the next morning your mother died.””

The room became quiet.

“She was driving to meet someone.””

“Who?””

Richard looked away.

My heart sank.

“Richard?””

Dad nodded.

“Your mother had evidence.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She was going to expose everyone.””

I stared at her.

“Then why are you acting like Dad was the problem?””

Her face hardened.

“Because your father found out too late.””

“What does that mean?””

Dad looked at me.

And I saw the pain in his eyes.

“I followed her.””

I froze.

“What?””

“That morning. I followed her because I thought she was meeting someone about our marriage.””

His voice cracked.

“I was jealous. Angry. Stupid.””

He looked down.

“I arrived after the crash.””

Nobody moved.

“I saw the car.””

My breathing became shallow.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

His answer broke me.

“That I would lose you too.””

The anger inside me fought with the sadness.

All these years.

He had carried this alone.

But he had also hidden it from me.

Vanessa suddenly laughed.

A bitter laugh.

“You see?””

Everyone looked at her.

“She still protects him.””

I turned.

“You’re the one who destroyed my scholarship.””

She looked at me.

“And he destroyed the truth.””

Richard stepped forward.

“This is becoming emotional.””

Dad looked at him.

“Funny. You always say that when people get close to exposing you.””

Richard’s face changed.

The calm disappeared.

“You have no proof.””

I looked at the documents.

The emails.

The forged signature.

Then I remembered my mother’s letter.

The truth always survives.

I stood up.

“We do.””

Richard looked at me.

“What?””

I pulled out my phone.

While everyone argued, I had taken pictures of every document.

Every email.

Every signature.

Richard realized too late.

“You wouldn’t.””

“I would.””

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Vanessa stepped back.

“You recorded everything?””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I documented everything.””

The same way my mother did.

The next weeks were a storm.

Investigations.

Legal meetings.

Questions that had no easy answers.

Richard was removed from handling the estate.

Vanessa faced consequences for the forged documents and financial attempts.

But the hardest part was rebuilding trust with my father.

One evening, we sat outside.

The same backyard where my mother used to watch me play.

“I’m sorry,” Dad said.

I looked at him.

“I know.””

“No. I don’t think you do.””

He wiped his eyes.

“I should have told you everything.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

A long silence passed.

Then he smiled sadly.

“You know what your mother would say?””

“What?””

“She’d say you’re stronger than both of us.””

I looked toward the house.

For the first time in months, I didn’t feel trapped.

I felt free.

But there was still one thing I needed to know.

The last piece.

The reason Vanessa had destroyed my scholarship.

The reason she was willing to risk everything.

I found out when the court released one final document.

A document Vanessa had hidden.

A document signed three days before she tore my letter.

And when I read the name on it…

I realized the scholarship was never her biggest fear.
