Amused

Chapter 2: The Man Who Heard Everything

Nobody moved.

The room felt smaller than it had ever felt before.

Vanessa’s hand fell away from my wrist.

My father, Daniel, stood in the doorway holding the torn piece of my future between his fingers.

I had imagined telling him about the scholarship hundreds of times.

I imagined him smiling.

I imagined him hugging me.

I imagined him saying he knew I could do it.

I never imagined him finding out like this.

“Daniel,” Vanessa said quickly.

Her voice changed instantly.

The coldness disappeared.

The fear disappeared.

She became the woman everyone else knew.

The caring wife.

The supportive stepmother.

The person who brought cookies to school events and smiled for family photos.

“You’re home early,” she said.

Dad didn’t answer.

He looked at me.

Then at the pieces of paper scattered across the floor.

“Is this what I think it is?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

My voice barely came out.

“It was my scholarship letter.””

His eyes moved back to Vanessa.

“Why is it torn?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You’re misunderstanding.””

“Am I?””

“Of course not.””

She walked toward him.

“It was an accident.””

An accident.

The word hit me harder than I expected.

I laughed once, but there was no happiness in it.

“An accident?””

Vanessa looked at me sharply.

“Be quiet.””

Dad noticed.

His expression changed.

“Why did you tell her to be quiet?””

Vanessa stopped.

“I was just saying—”

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“Answer the question.””

I had never heard my father speak like that.

Not to her.

Not ever.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“This scholarship isn’t what you think.””

Dad looked confused.

“What does that mean?””

She took a breath.

“Ethan has been struggling.””

I stared at her.

“What does Ethan have to do with this?””

She ignored me.

“He needs more support. He needs better opportunities.””

Dad looked between us.

“Vanessa.””

She continued.

“You know how much pressure he’s under.””

“And?””

“And she already gets enough attention.””

The room went silent.

I felt like someone had punched the air out of my lungs.

Dad looked at me.

Then back at her.

“Enough attention?””

Vanessa realized too late that she had said too much.

“She’s always been independent,” she corrected quickly.

“She doesn’t need as much help.””

I wiped my tears.

“So because I worked hard, I deserve less?””

“No one said that.””

“You ripped my letter.””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“You can request another copy.””

Dad looked down at the torn paper.

Then at my wrist.

His eyes narrowed.

“What happened there?””

I pulled my sleeve down.

“Nothing.””

Vanessa looked relieved.

That made me angry.

Because she knew exactly why I lied.

I was scared.

Not of Dad.

Of what would happen after he left the room.

Dad noticed my hesitation.

He walked closer.

“Look at me.””

I did.

“Did she hurt you?””

I opened my mouth.

No words came out.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, this is ridiculous.””

He didn’t look away from me.

“Did she hurt you?””

My silence answered.

His face changed.

Not anger.

Something worse.

Disappointment.

“Vanessa.””

She shook her head.

“You’re making this bigger than it is.””

“No.””

Dad looked at the torn scholarship pieces.

“You made it bigger.””

Before anyone could say anything else, footsteps came from upstairs.

Ethan appeared at the top of the stairs.

“What’s going on?””

Nobody answered.

He looked at the floor.

Then at me.

Then at his mother.

His expression changed.

“You told him?””

Vanessa immediately turned.

“Ethan, go upstairs.””

But Dad heard.

His eyes moved slowly toward him.

“Told me what?””

Ethan froze.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

“Nothing.””

Dad stared at him.

“Come downstairs.””

Ethan hesitated.

Then walked down.

Every step sounded louder than the last.

Dad held up the torn letter.

“Did you know about this?””

Ethan looked at his mother.

That one glance said everything.

“Yes,” Dad whispered.

Vanessa immediately stepped between them.

“Daniel, don’t blame Ethan.””

“I’m not.””

He looked at her.

“I’m trying to understand why my family thought hiding this from me was acceptable.””

No one spoke.

Then Ethan said something that made my entire body go cold.

“I didn’t want her to get it either.””

Dad looked at him.

“Why?””

Ethan looked down.

“Because Mom said if she left for college, everything would change.””

I stared at Vanessa.

She didn’t deny it.

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“What else did she say?””

Ethan stayed silent.

Then his phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His face turned pale.

Dad noticed.

“Who is that?””

Ethan slowly turned the phone around.

The message was from Vanessa.

But it wasn’t a new message.

It was an old one.

A conversation that had been saved.

Dad read the first line.

And his expression changed completely.
