Amused

Chapter 8: The Betrayal Behind The Desk

Mr. Collins had been in our family for fifteen years.

He handled my mother’s estate.

He attended family gatherings.

He brought me gifts on my birthdays.

He was the person my father trusted to protect me.

And now his name was at the bottom of Vanessa’s emails.

I couldn’t stop staring.

“This has to be fake.””

Ethan shook his head.

“I checked.””

“How?””

“I looked through Mom’s old laptop.””

I looked at him.

“You had access?””

“After she left, I searched everything.””

His voice became quiet.

“I wanted to know what she was hiding.””

I understood.

Because I wanted the same thing.

The truth.

Dad came home that afternoon and found both of us sitting at the kitchen table.

He immediately knew something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I pushed the email toward him.

He read it.

Then read it again.

His face changed.

“No.””

That was all he said.

“No.””

“Dad.””

He shook his head.

“Richard wouldn’t do this.””

I stared at him.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

“Everyone keeps believing people are good because they want them to be.””

The silence was heavy.

Dad picked up his phone.

“I’m calling him.””

“No.””

I stopped him.

“Why?””

“Because if he knows we found out, he can destroy evidence.””

Dad looked at me.

And for the first time, he didn’t see a child.

He saw someone who had learned from all of this.

“You’re right.””

That night, we watched the house.

It felt ridiculous.

Like something from a movie.

But nothing about our lives felt normal anymore.

At 11:43 p.m., a car stopped outside.

My heart raced.

Dad looked through the window.

“It’s him.””

Richard Collins.

The family lawyer.

He walked toward the door.

Dad moved before he could knock.

When the door opened, Richard froze.

“Daniel.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“What are you doing here?””

Richard smiled slightly.

“I came to check on you.””

“After midnight?””

Richard looked past him.

And saw me.

His expression changed for half a second.

Fear.

Then it disappeared.

“Emma.””

I stepped forward.

“Why did Vanessa email you?””

Richard went still.

“What?””

I held up the papers.

“Don’t pretend.””

For the first time, his mask slipped.

Dad’s voice became cold.

“How long?””

Richard looked at him.

“How long what?””

“How long have you been helping her?””

The lawyer sighed.

Then slowly stepped inside.

“I think we all need to have a conversation.””

“No.””

Dad pointed outside.

“You need to leave.””

Richard laughed quietly.

“You still don’t understand.””

My stomach tightened.

“Understand what?””

He looked at me.

“Your mother was smarter than all of us.””

The sentence made my blood run cold.

“What does that mean?””

Richard looked around the room.

“At some point, she figured everything out.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Everything?””

Richard smiled.

“Yes.””

Then he reached into his briefcase.

He pulled out a document.

And placed it on the table.

“This is why Vanessa was desperate.””

I looked down.

It was a legal agreement.

My name was on it.

But the signature wasn’t mine.

I felt dizzy.

“What is this?””

Richard looked directly at me.

“The document that would have given Vanessa control of your inheritance.””

Dad grabbed it.

His face turned furious.

“This is forged.””

Richard said nothing.

And that silence was terrifying.

Because he didn’t need to deny it.

Then the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stood there.

She looked exhausted.

But she was smiling.

“You finally found it.””

Dad stared.

“Why are you here?””

She looked at me.

“Because I’m done running.””

Then she looked at the document.

“You want the truth?””

Her smile faded.

“Fine.””

She took a breath.

“Your mother wasn’t investigating me.””

May you like

She looked at my father.

“She was investigating him.””
