Chapter 8: The Father Who Wasn’t Supposed To Exist

The next week felt like living inside someone else’s nightmare.

Every morning brought a new piece of the past.

Every piece made me question the life I thought I had built.

Zoria barely spoke.

Not because she hated me.

Because she was trying to understand who she was.

One evening, I found her sitting outside.

The same steps where she had cried after losing her scholarship.

Only this time, the pain was different.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked at me.

“For what?””

“For all of this.””

She shook her head.

“Dad, none of this is your fault.””

That word.

Dad.

It almost broke me.

“You still call me that?””

Her eyes filled.

“Why wouldn’t I?””

“Because I’m not your biological father.””

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then she said something I would never forget.

“Biology didn’t wake up with me when I had nightmares.””

I couldn’t speak.

“Biology didn’t teach me how to ride a bike.””

She wiped her face.

“Biology didn’t sit outside my bedroom when I was sick.””

I looked away.

“Zoria…”

“You’re my dad.””

Simple.

Certain.

But I still felt guilty.

Because I had missed so much.

I should have known about the scholarship.

I should have known about the music program.

I should have known she was afraid.

The next day, Daniel appeared.

At our house.

I opened the door and saw him standing there.

Older than I expected.

Confident.

A man who looked like he had spent his entire life getting what he wanted.

“Michael.””

I stepped outside.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

“I want to see Zoria.””

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“You don’t get to decide that.””

I stepped closer.

“I do when you disappeared for eighteen years.””

His jaw tightened.

“You think I don’t regret it?””

“I think regret is easy when someone else paid the price.””

Before he could answer, Valerie appeared behind me.

“Daniel.””

The way she said his name told me everything.

Fear.

Daniel looked at her.

“You should have told her.””

Valerie’s face changed.

“I was protecting her.””

“No.””

He smiled bitterly.

“You were protecting yourself.””

I hated that part of me wondered if he was right.

Then Zoria appeared.

She looked at him.

And everything went quiet.

Daniel stared.

“My God.””

Zoria didn’t move.

“You’re him.””

He nodded.

“I’m your father.””

She looked hurt.

“No.””

The word surprised him.

“I mean…”

She swallowed.

“You’re my biological father.””

The distinction mattered.

Daniel looked wounded.

But I noticed something.

He expected forgiveness.

Immediately.

And Zoria didn’t give it.

“I spent eighteen years wondering why I didn’t have a father.””

She looked at him.

“Now I know.””

Daniel looked down.

“I made mistakes.””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“You made choices.””

I almost smiled.

Because she had learned that from me.

Daniel left after that.

But before he did, he handed me an envelope.

“What is this?””

“Everything Valerie hid.””

After he left, we opened it.

Inside were letters.

Emails.

Documents.

Proof that Daniel had tried to contact Zoria over the years.

But there was one thing that shocked me.

A letter from Valerie.

A letter she wrote when Zoria was five.

The final sentence said:

*“If you come near my daughter again, I will make sure she never knows you existed.””*

Zoria read it.

Then quietly placed it down.

“She stole my choice.””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

That night, Valerie packed a bag.

“Where are you going?””

She looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

For the first time, she looked like someone who had lost control of everything.

“I ruined my daughter’s life.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I couldn’t tell her she hadn’t.

She had.

But the story wasn’t finished.

The next morning, Daniel called.

He sounded different.

Scared.

“Michael.””

“What?””

“You need to come alone.””

“Why?””

A pause.

“Because I found something about Valerie.””

“What?””

May you like

His voice lowered.

“Something that proves the scholarship wasn’t the first time she destroyed Zoria’s future.””
