Chapter 2: The Name On The Withdrawal Form
Nobody spoke.
Not even Valerie.
For the first time all afternoon, she looked afraid.
“That’s impossible,” she said.
Dr. Harper didn’t blink.
“We verified the records.””
Valerie laughed nervously.
“There must be some misunderstanding.””
I looked at my wife.
“Valerie.””
She avoided my eyes.
That hurt more than anything.
“Explain.””
She lifted her chin.
“I was trying to help.””
I stared at her.
“You canceled our daughter’s scholarship and you call that help?””
Several guests began whispering.
Kendra, who had been sitting inside earlier, appeared at the doorway.
She looked confused.
“What’s happening?””
Nobody answered.
Dr. Harper opened the folder.
“The scholarship was a four-year full academic award. Tuition, housing support, and research opportunities.””
Zoria looked like she was hearing it for the first time.
Because she was.
Valerie had hidden everything.
Dr. Harper turned to my daughter.
“Zoria, did you personally request a withdrawal?””
“No.””
“Did you sign any documents?””
“No.””
The woman nodded.
“That is what we thought.””
Valerie stepped forward.
“Look, I’m her mother. I was acting in her best interest.””
Dr. Harper’s expression hardened.
“A parent cannot withdraw a student’s scholarship because another student wants the opportunity.””
Kendra looked between them.
“Wait.””
Her voice shook.
“Are you saying Zoria gave up her scholarship because of me?””
Nobody answered.
But the silence did.
Kendra’s face changed.
“Mom?””
Valerie immediately moved toward her.
“Kendra, don’t listen to this.””
“No.””
Kendra stepped back.
“Did you?””
Valerie’s eyes narrowed.
“You don’t understand the situation.””
“I understand enough.””
The girl who had always seemed confident suddenly looked small.
Zoria looked away.
That broke my heart.
My daughter had been carrying this alone.
I walked beside her.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked at the ground.
“Because Mom said you would choose me.””
The sentence confused me.
“What?””
“She said if you knew, you would fight with her. She said our family would fall apart.””
I swallowed.
“And you believed that?””
Zoria’s eyes filled.
“I was eighteen, Dad.””
That sentence hurt.
Because she was right.
She was still my child.
And she had been forced to make an adult decision because the adults around her failed her.
Valerie shook her head.
“I did what I thought was necessary.””
I turned.
“You stole her choice.””
“No.””
“Yes.””
My voice was calm.
That seemed to scare her more.
“You didn’t teach sacrifice. You taught her that her dreams mattered less.””
Kendra suddenly spoke.
“I never asked for this.””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked at Zoria.
“I didn’t know.””
Zoria gave a sad smile.
“I know.””
That somehow made it worse.
Because there was no anger between the sisters.
Only damage.
Dr. Harper closed the folder.
“There is still time.””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“The university can reinstate the scholarship.””
Zoria’s eyes widened.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
A tiny spark returned to her face.
Then Dr. Harper added:
“But there is one problem.””
The yard went quiet again.
“What problem?”” I asked.
She looked at the documents.
“The original acceptance deadline was missed because of the withdrawal.””
My heart dropped.
“What happens now?””
Dr. Harper looked at Zoria.
“We need to know whether she still wants to attend.””
Zoria looked stunned.
After everything, she was being asked if she still wanted the dream she had been forced to abandon.
She looked at me.
Then at Valerie.
Then at the house.
“I do.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“I always did.””
Dr. Harper nodded.
“Then we will fight for it.””
Valerie suddenly stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She realized too late how she sounded.
“No?””
I repeated.
She took a breath.
“I mean… maybe we should think about this.””
Zoria looked confused.
“Think about what?””
Valerie’s silence answered.
And then Kendra said something that made everyone freeze.
“Mom already gave my name to the university.””
I turned slowly.
“What?””
Kendra looked sick.
“She told them I was interested in transferring.””
Valerie’s face went pale.
“Kendra.””
“No.””
Kendra shook her head.
“You told me Zoria gave up her place for me.””
Her voice cracked.
“But you never told me you used her information.””
I looked at my wife.
“What exactly did you do?””
Valerie didn’t answer.
She didn’t have to.
Because Dr. Harper looked down at another document.
May you like
And quietly said:
“Mr. Carter… there is another issue.””
