Chapter 7: The Man From Valerie’s Past
I searched the name all night.
Daniel Cross.
The name meant nothing to me.
But it meant everything to Valerie.
I knew because every time I said it, her face changed.
Fear.
Guilt.
Regret.
Things I had never seen in twenty years of marriage.
The next morning, I found her sitting alone on the porch.
A cup of coffee sat untouched beside her.
“You knew someone would contact me.””
She didn’t deny it.
“I hoped they wouldn’t.””
“Who is Daniel?””
She looked toward the street.
“He was Zoria’s biological father.””
I sat down across from her.
“And?””
Her hands shook.
“And he wasn’t supposed to find us.””
The words made my stomach turn.
“Why?””
Valerie looked at me.
“Because he was dangerous.””
I waited.
But she said nothing.
“Dangerous how?””
“He wasn’t the man I thought he was.””
That answer was too vague.
I leaned forward.
“Valerie, I spent eighteen years believing I knew my family.””
Her eyes filled.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice became sharper.
“You don’t know what it feels like to discover that your entire life has missing pages.””
She looked down.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“That excuse is getting old.””
She nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
For once, she didn’t fight.
“I made choices because I was afraid.””
“Tell me everything.””
She took a deep breath.
“Daniel and I met when I was twenty.””
She paused.
“He was charming. Successful. Everyone liked him.””
“And then?””
“Then I found out he had another family.””
I said nothing.
“He lied about everything.””
Her voice became quieter.
“When I told him I was pregnant, he told me I was ruining his life.””
My hands tightened.
“He wanted you to disappear?””
“He wanted me to give Zoria up.””
I looked toward the house.
“And you didn’t.””
“No.””
A long silence passed.
“Then how did he find out?””
Valerie looked at me.
“He never stopped looking.””
The answer chilled me.
“What?””
“He contacted me years ago.””
My eyes narrowed.
“You never told me.””
“No.””
“What did he want?””
Valerie hesitated.
“Money.””
I laughed once.
A humorless sound.
“Of course.””
“He threatened to expose everything if I didn’t pay him.””
“Did you?””
She nodded.
“How much?””
“Over the years?””
She whispered the number.
I stared.
Enough to destroy a family.
“Where did you get that money?””
She looked away.
“From the accounts.””
My stomach dropped.
“What accounts?””
She didn’t answer.
I stood.
“Valerie.””
“The savings.””
The room went silent.
“You used our savings?””
“I thought I could make him go away.””
“And instead?””
“He came back.””
I walked inside.
My anger wasn’t loud anymore.
It was something colder.
Something heavier.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
“Michael Carter?””
“Yes.””
There was a pause.
“I’m Daniel.””
My entire body froze.
“You sent the message.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
A quiet laugh.
“Because Valerie has been lying to both of us.””
I looked through the window.
Valerie was watching me.
“What do you want?””
“I want my daughter.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“You abandoned her.””
“I made mistakes.””
“No.””
My voice became hard.
“You made choices.””
The man sighed.
“I know what Valerie told you.””
“Then you know she raised her.””
“And you know she hid my child.””
My jaw tightened.
“She was a baby.””
“She was my daughter.””
“You walked away.””
Silence.
Then Daniel said:
“I have proof.””
“Proof of what?””
“Proof that Valerie didn’t just hide me from Zoria.””
A pause.
“She erased me.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What does that mean?””
“You should ask your wife why she changed Zoria’s birth records.””
I looked at Valerie.
Her face went white.
Daniel continued:
“She didn’t just lie about who I was.””
“She made sure Zoria would never find me.””
The call ended.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Valerie whispered:
“Michael…”
I turned.
“Is that true?””
She didn’t answer.
May you like
And once again…
Her silence was the truth.
