Amused

Chapter 8: The Wife Who Was Erased

I read the message again.

Then again.

Then a third time.

*Ask your husband why he never told you about his first wife.*

My fingers went numb around the phone.

A first wife.

The phrase didn’t fit into my reality.

Daniel Whitmore had never mentioned another marriage.

Not once.

Not during our first date.

Not during our engagement.

Not during the countless nights when we talked about our pasts.

I knew his childhood stories.

His fears.

His dreams.

Or at least I thought I did.

I knew about his father leaving the family when he was young.

I knew about his complicated relationship with Eleanor.

I knew about the pressure of carrying the Whitmore name.

But a wife?

A marriage?

A whole person who existed before me?

Nothing.

I stood from my bed and walked downstairs.

My father was in his office, surrounded by documents.

He looked up immediately.

“What happened?””

I handed him my phone.

He read the message.

His expression changed.

Not shock.

Recognition.

That scared me.

“You know something.””

It wasn’t a question.

My father placed the phone down carefully.

“Olivia.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“Not this time.””

His eyes softened.

“I was hoping you would never have to find out this way.””

My heart sank.

“You knew?””

“Not everything.””

“But you knew there was something?””

He looked away.

And that was enough.

For years, my father had respected my choices.

He had stayed quiet because he believed I deserved to live my own life.

But now his silence felt like another betrayal.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t have proof.””

I stared at him.

“Proof of what?””

He sighed.

“Daniel’s first marriage.””

The room felt colder.

I sat down slowly.

“Tell me.””

My father leaned back.

“When you told me you were marrying Daniel, I investigated his family.””

“I know.””

“I found something unusual.””

“What?””

“A missing record.””

I frowned.

“A missing record?””

“Yes.””

He opened a drawer and pulled out an old file.

“I discovered evidence that Daniel had been married before.””

My hands tightened.

“Who was she?””

My father opened the file.

A photograph was inside.

A young woman.

Beautiful.

Dark hair.

A warm smile.

I stared at her face.

Something about her felt familiar.

“This is Vanessa Hale.””

My father continued.

“She married Daniel when he was twenty-four.””

I swallowed.

“How long?””

“Two years.””

“And what happened?””

My father’s expression became serious.

“She disappeared.””

The word hit me.

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“Like… divorced?””

“No.””

My father looked at me.

“Like she vanished.””

I felt a chill.

“Why didn’t anyone know?””

“Because the Whitmores buried it.””

The answer was immediate.

Too immediate.

My stomach tightened.

“Buried?””

“Yes.””

He handed me another document.

“Annulment records. Legal requests. Private settlements.””

I looked through the pages.

The more I read, the more confused I became.

“Why?””

My father was quiet.

Then he said:

“Because Vanessa was pregnant.””

I stopped breathing.

Another baby.

Another woman.

Another secret.

“What happened to the child?””

My father looked at me.

“That’s what nobody knows.””

I stared at the photograph.

A woman erased from history.

A child erased from a family.

And suddenly, Daniel’s behavior made sense in the worst possible way.

He wasn’t just hiding mistakes.

He was hiding a pattern.

My phone buzzed.

Another message from the unknown number.

*Now you understand why Eleanor was afraid of you.*

I typed back immediately.

*Who are you?*

The response came.

*Someone who knew Vanessa.*

My father watched me.

“Don’t answer.””

“Why?””

“Because whoever this is has been waiting for this moment.””

I looked at him.

“Maybe they’re the only person telling me the truth.””

He didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

I had spent years surrounded by people who protected their own interests.

Daniel protected his family.

Eleanor protected her power.

Chloe protected her pride.

Even my father, out of love, had protected me from information he thought would hurt me.

Everyone had decided what I could handle.

I was tired of being protected from the truth.

I typed:

*Where do we meet?*

The answer arrived seconds later.

*Tomorrow. 10 a.m. The old Whitmore chapel. Come alone.*

My father immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“I’m going.””

“Olivia.””

“I need answers.””

“You don’t know who sent that.””

I looked at him.

“I know exactly what I know.””

I placed my hand over my stomach.

“And I know my daughter deserves a mother who finds the truth.””

The next morning, I arrived at the old Whitmore chapel.

It was abandoned.

The family had stopped using it years ago.

The stone walls were covered with vines.

The wooden doors creaked when I pushed them open.

Inside, the air smelled like dust and old memories.

A woman stood near the altar.

She turned when she heard me.

And I froze.

Because I knew her.

Not personally.

But from photographs.

From documents.

From the face that had haunted the pages in my father’s file.

“Vanessa?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You came.””

I couldn’t move.

“You’re alive.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

My voice shook.

“Why did everyone think you disappeared?””

She looked down.

“Because that’s what they wanted.””

A thousand questions filled my mind.

“But why?””

Vanessa took a slow breath.

“Because I discovered the truth about the Whitmores.””

I stared at her.

“What truth?””

She looked toward the empty chapel seats.

“When I married Daniel, I thought I loved a man.””

A sad smile crossed her face.

“I didn’t realize I was marrying a family system.””

The words sounded painfully familiar.

“What happened?””

She looked at me.

“I got pregnant.””

My heart tightened.

“Like me.””

“Yes.””

A pause.

“And that’s when everything changed.””

She walked toward the old wooden altar.

“Eleanor told me I had a duty.””

I frowned.

“A duty?””

“She said my child belonged to the Whitmore legacy.””

Cold moved through me.

“The same thing she’s trying to do now.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Exactly.””

I felt sick.

“She wanted your child?””

“She wanted control.””

The words echoed.

“After I refused to give up my rights, Daniel changed.””

My chest tightened.

“What did he do?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“He became the man you know.””

I flinched.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Her voice was gentle.

“But younger.””

She looked away.

“He didn’t hate me.””

That sentence surprised me.

“He didn’t?””

“No.””

She swallowed.

“That was the worst part.””

“He loved me.””

I stared.

“Then why?””

“Because Daniel always chooses fear over courage.””

The words hurt because they were true.

Vanessa continued.

“He told me he would protect me.””

My eyes lowered.

“He told me that too.””

She looked at me.

“I know.””

Silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“Do you know why Eleanor accepted you?””

I shook my head.

“Because I was harmless?””

“No.””

The answer came quickly.

“Because she believed you would create the perfect heir.””

I felt cold.

“She knew about the baby?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because Daniel told her.””

The pain came instantly.

Daniel.

My husband.

The father of my child.

The man who had looked into my eyes and promised forever.

He had been reporting my life to his family.

“How long?””

“Since the beginning.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

Vanessa reached into her bag.

She removed a small envelope.

“He kept this.””

“What is it?””

“Something Daniel wrote before your wedding.””

My heart raced.

“Why would you have it?””

“Because he sent it to me.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Daniel’s handwriting.

The first line made my entire body freeze.

*Vanessa, I need you to understand. This marriage is not what it looks like.*

I kept reading.

*I can’t escape my family unless I do exactly what they expect.*

My breathing became shallow.

The letter continued.

*Olivia is kind. She trusts me. I hate myself for involving her.*

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with sadness.

“The truth.””

I looked back at the letter.

Then the final sentence.

The sentence that destroyed the last piece of hope I had left.

*Once Olivia gives birth, I will finally be free.*

My hands began to shake.

Free.

Not happy.

Not loved.

Free.

A sound came from behind me.

A floorboard creaking.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“Someone followed you.””

I turned.

The chapel doors slowly opened.

A figure stood in the doorway.

And when the sunlight revealed his face, my heart stopped.

Daniel.

He looked at the letter in my hand.

Then at Vanessa.

And whispered:

“Olivia…”

A pause.

May you like

His voice broke.

“You weren’t supposed to find her.””
