Chapter 5: The Doctor Who Sold My Trust
I stared at the name on the screen until the letters stopped looking real.
Dr. Samuel Carter.
My doctor.
The man who had watched my daughter grow before anyone else.
The man who had smiled at every ultrasound.
The man who had told me, “Your baby is strong, Olivia.””
My hands trembled.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Almost like a denial to myself.
“No, that’s impossible.””
Rebecca didn’t react.
She had probably seen this moment before.
The moment when evidence collided with memories.
The moment when a person had to decide whether they trusted what they remembered or what was in front of them.
My father reached for the tablet.
“Show me.””
Rebecca handed it over.
I watched his eyes move across the screen.
Every second that passed made his expression darker.
“What exactly did he do?”” my father asked.
Rebecca answered carefully.
“Dr. Carter accessed Olivia’s medical records outside normal procedures.””
My stomach tightened.
“He violated patient confidentiality?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Rebecca tapped another file.
“The payment trail suggests he was compensated.””
My father looked at the amount.
His jaw tightened.
“How much?””
“Fifty thousand dollars.””
The number made me sick.
Not because it was large.
Because it was small.
That was what hurt.
A person I trusted.
A person who knew my fears.
My hopes.
My daughter’s heartbeat.
Had sold all of that for a number on a bank statement.
I pushed the tablet away.
“I need to see him.””
My father looked at me immediately.
“No.””
I turned toward him.
“Dad.””
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“You are eight months pregnant. You have been publicly attacked, emotionally manipulated, and betrayed within twenty-four hours. You are not walking into another confrontation.””
I understood his concern.
But I also understood something else.
I had spent years letting people speak for me.
Letting Daniel explain.
Letting Eleanor decide.
Letting Chloe insult.
Letting everyone else control the story.
Not anymore.
“I’m not going there to fight.””
My father watched me.
“Then why?””
“Because I need to hear him lie to my face.””
The room went quiet.
Rebecca looked at my father.
After a moment, he nodded.
“Fine.””
I knew that wasn’t permission.
It was acceptance that he couldn’t stop me.
“But you won’t go alone.””
“I know.””
That afternoon, I sat across from Dr. Samuel Carter in the private consultation room where I had spent the happiest moments of my pregnancy.
The same room.
The same chair.
The same framed pictures of newborn babies on the wall.
Everything looked exactly the same.
But nothing felt the same.
Dr. Carter entered carrying a folder.
When he saw me, he stopped.
The color drained from his face.
“Olivia.””
I studied him.
For years, I had thought of him as a kind man.
A grandfatherly figure.
Someone safe.
Now I saw every smile differently.
Every reassuring word.
Every gentle question.
“Did you know?”” I asked.
He froze.
“Know what?””
I almost laughed.
Even now.
Still pretending.
I placed the document on the table.
The payment record.
His eyes dropped.
And that was all the answer I needed.
His shoulders lowered.
“I can explain.””
I looked at him.
“That sentence usually comes right before someone admits they did something terrible.””
He sat down slowly.
“Olivia, you need to understand—”
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“You need to understand something.””
I leaned forward.
“I trusted you.””
His face changed.
A flicker of shame appeared.
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“Then why did you?””
Silence.
The kind of silence where the truth is already there.
Finally, he whispered:
“Because I was pressured.””
“By who?””
He looked away.
I felt my heart sink.
“By Daniel?””
No answer.
That was enough.
I stood.
“Daniel paid you.””
“Olivia—”
“Did he?””
Dr. Carter closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The word broke something inside me.
Not because I didn’t know.
Because hearing it made it real.
“Why?””
His hands shook.
“I was told to provide information.””
“What information?””
“Your records.””
“Why?””
He looked at me.
And for a moment, I saw genuine regret.
“Because they needed proof.””
“Proof of what?””
He hesitated.
Then whispered:
“That the baby might not be Daniel’s.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Did you believe that?””
“No.””
The answer came immediately.
Too quickly.
“I never believed that.””
“Then why help them?””
His voice cracked.
“Because I owed them.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He looked down.
“My medical practice was failing.””
The confession came slowly.
“The Whitmores invested in my clinic years ago. When I had financial problems, they helped me.””
I stared at him.
“So they owned you.””
His silence confirmed it.
I walked toward the window.
Outside, people moved through the hospital hallway.
Laughing.
Talking.
Living normal lives.
Meanwhile, my entire world had become a puzzle of betrayal.
“Did Daniel know?””
Dr. Carter hesitated.
That hesitation was different.
More painful.
“Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
“How long?””
“Since before your pregnancy.””
The room spun.
“Before?””
“Yes.””
I turned back.
“What does that mean?””
He swallowed.
“Daniel approached me six months before your wedding.””
My heart stopped.
Six months.
Before we were married.
Before I promised him forever.
Before I believed I had found the person who would protect me.
“What did he ask you?””
Dr. Carter looked ashamed.
“He asked whether there was any way to prevent your pregnancy from happening.””
The silence was deafening.
I couldn’t breathe.
“He didn’t want a baby?””
“Not then.””
“Why?””
The doctor looked at the floor.
“Because the Whitmores had already chosen someone else for him.””
The words cut deeper than I expected.
“Someone else?””
“Yes.””
I felt cold.
“Who?””
Dr. Carter didn’t answer.
He didn’t have to.
A terrible realization formed.
“Chloe.””
His silence confirmed it.
I stepped back.
The memories came rushing in.
Daniel telling me his family would eventually accept me.
Daniel insisting Chloe was just “protective.””
Daniel asking me not to argue with his mother.
Daniel telling me he loved me.
How much of it was real?
How much was a performance?
“Why did he marry me?””
Dr. Carter looked at me.
And his answer was the one I feared most.
“Because he thought he could control the situation.””
My eyes burned.
“What situation?””
“The succession rules.””
There it was again.
The inheritance.
The thing everyone kept circling around.
Dr. Carter continued.
“The Whitmore family believed Daniel could marry anyone temporarily, but if he had a legitimate child, that child would become the strongest successor.””
I touched my stomach.
“So I was a requirement.””
His expression was filled with regret.
“That’s what they believed.””
The words were devastating.
I had spent three years believing I was loved.
But maybe I had only been useful.
The door opened suddenly.
My father walked in.
He had heard enough.
“Where is Daniel?””
Dr. Carter looked frightened.
“I don’t know.””
My father stepped closer.
“Think carefully.””
The doctor swallowed.
“There is one thing.””
“What?””
Dr. Carter opened his folder.
“I wasn’t the only person involved.””
My father’s eyes narrowed.
“Who else?””
The doctor looked at me.
Then said:
“The person who created the fake pregnancy documents…”
A pause.
“…was not working for Eleanor.””
My father went still.
“Then who?””
Dr. Carter’s voice dropped.
“They were working directly for Daniel.””
The room became silent.
I felt tears burning my eyes.
Not because I was surprised.
Because a small part of me had still hoped.
Still believed.
Still waited for some explanation that would save the man I loved.
But now there was nothing left to save.
My father took my hand.
“Olivia.””
I looked at him.
“I need to know something.””
“What?””
I stared at the floor.
“If Daniel never wanted this baby…”
My voice broke.
“Why did he stay when I got pregnant?””
Nobody answered.
Then Rebecca appeared at the doorway.
Her face was serious.
“Mr. Bennett.””
My father looked up.
“What?””
She held a file.
“We found Daniel.””
I stood.
“Where?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“He’s not running.””
A pause.
“He’s at the Whitmore estate.””
My heart sank.
“Why?””
Rebecca’s expression hardened.
“Because he just called a family meeting.””
My father frowned.
“For what?””
Rebecca looked down at the file.
Then back at me.
“He’s planning to announce something tonight.””
“What?””
Her answer made every part of me go cold.
“He intends to declare that he wants full custody of your baby after birth.””
I stopped breathing.
May you like
And then Rebecca added:
“Because Daniel claims he has proof that you are an unfit mother.””
