Amused

Chapter 3: The Lie They Saved for the Final Toast

The room didn’t just go silent.

It stopped.

The kind of silence that happens when something impossible is said out loud.

Rebecca’s words hung above us like smoke.

“They were planning to announce that your baby is not Daniel’s.””

For a moment, I couldn’t process what I had heard.

My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.

Not because I was afraid.

Because my body reacted before my mind could.

My daughter.

My innocent baby.

Even before she was born, they had tried to use her as a weapon.

I looked at Daniel.

He looked like someone had punched the air out of him.

“What?”” he whispered.

Rebecca didn’t look away.

“The second accusation was prepared for later tonight. After the ring incident created enough doubt, they intended to question Olivia’s loyalty and claim the pregnancy was evidence of betrayal.””

A wave of whispers exploded across the ballroom.

Guests who had been quietly watching now looked between Daniel and me.

Some looked shocked.

Others looked uncomfortable.

But I knew what they were thinking.

The same thing everyone always wondered when a woman was accused.

Maybe there was something they didn’t know.

Maybe she deserved it.

Maybe.

That single word had followed me for three years.

Maybe Olivia is too emotional.

Maybe Olivia is difficult.

Maybe Olivia isn’t good enough.

Tonight, I finally understood something.

People who wanted to destroy you didn’t need you to be guilty.

They only needed others to doubt you.

Daniel took a step toward me.

“Olivia.””

I looked at him.

His face was pale.

“I didn’t know.””

The words came out quickly.

Almost desperately.

“I swear, I didn’t know they were planning this.””

I stared at him.

And somehow, that hurt more.

Because he was asking me to believe that he had no part in it.

But he had already been part of something.

He had stood there.

He had watched.

He had chosen silence.

“Daniel,” I said quietly, “you didn’t have to know the plan to hurt me.””

His expression broke.

“I should have stopped them.””

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised him.

I think he expected anger.

A fight.

A dramatic scene.

But I was too tired for that.

“I needed my husband tonight,” I continued.

“Not someone who waited until my father arrived to finally see what was happening.””

His eyes dropped.

Behind him, Chloe suddenly laughed.

It was a strange sound.

Sharp.

Almost desperate.

“You’re all acting like Olivia is some innocent victim.””

Everyone turned toward her.

She was still holding the ring.

Her perfect wedding makeup was beginning to crack.

“She’s always been good at this.””

I frowned.

“At what?””

“Making people feel sorry for her.””

My father’s expression changed.

“Enough.””

But Chloe continued.

“No, she wants everyone to believe she’s helpless. She married Daniel, moved into our world, and now she’s pretending we attacked her.””

I looked at her.

“You planted a ring.””

Her jaw tightened.

“You don’t know that.””

“The footage showed it.””

“You don’t know why I did it.””

A strange calm settled over me.

“Then explain.””

For the first time all night, Chloe hesitated.

Not because she felt guilty.

Because she was trying to decide what lie would work best.

“I was testing you.””

The room reacted immediately.

A few people actually laughed in disbelief.

I stared at her.

“Testing me?””

“Yes.””

She lifted her chin.

“I wanted to know if you would admit the truth.””

“What truth?””

“That you don’t belong here.””

My father took one step forward.

“Rebecca.””

“Yes, Mr. Bennett?””

“Get every piece of evidence.””

Chloe’s confidence faded.

“What does that mean?””

“It means,” my father said, “your little performance is over.””

Eleanor finally moved.

She had been silent too long.

That was when I knew she was truly dangerous.

Chloe acted from emotion.

Eleanor acted from strategy.

“Richard,” Eleanor said, “you are making a mistake.””

My father looked at her.

“A mistake?””

“Yes.””

She glanced around the room.

“Your daughter is emotional. She is pregnant. She has been under pressure. Perhaps she misunderstood what happened.””

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Even now.

Even after everything.

She was still trying to make me the problem.

My father’s face remained unreadable.

“You tore my daughter’s dress.””

Eleanor’s lips pressed together.

“That was an accident.””

“Your heel accidentally stepped on silk?””

“Yes.””

“And your daughter accidentally planted a family heirloom?””

Eleanor said nothing.

That silence was enough.

My father turned away from her.

“Daniel.””

Daniel looked up.

“Yes.””

My father walked toward him.

“You married my daughter.””

“Yes.””

“Do you understand what that means?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Yes.””

“No.””

My father stopped inches away.

“You understand what it means legally. Socially. Publicly.””

His voice lowered.

“But do you understand what it means personally?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

My father continued.

“It means when everyone else turns against her, you stand beside her.””

The words hit Daniel harder than any accusation.

Because he knew.

He had failed the simplest promise.

I watched him struggle to speak.

Finally, he said:

“I’m sorry.””

The ballroom waited.

I looked at the man I once believed would protect me forever.

An apology.

Three words.

They should have meant something.

But apologies only matter before the damage is done.

“I believe you’re sorry,” I said.

Daniel looked surprised.

“But I don’t know if that changes anything.””

His face fell.

Before he could answer, Rebecca approached my father again.

“Mr. Bennett.””

Something about her tone made everyone uneasy.

“What?””

She handed him another document.

“I found the source of the false paternity claim.””

My stomach tightened.

My father read the page.

Then he looked at me.

“Olivia.””

I immediately knew.

Whatever was written there was worse.

“What is it?””

He hesitated.

That scared me more than anything else.

My father never hesitated.

“Someone provided them with information about your pregnancy.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What information?””

Rebecca answered.

“Medical information.””

My blood went cold.

“What?””

She looked at me carefully.

“Your prenatal records.””

The room blurred for a second.

“My records?””

“Yes.””

I felt my fingers become numb.

Those records were private.

Only a few people had access.

My doctor.

Me.

Daniel.

And…

I looked at my husband.

Daniel’s expression changed.

Not guilt.

Confusion.

Real confusion.

“No,” he whispered.

My father noticed.

“Daniel?””

“I never gave them anything.””

Rebecca nodded.

“We know.””

That answer made everyone pause.

“Then how did they get it?”” Daniel asked.

Rebecca looked at the document.

“There was a request made two weeks ago.””

My father’s eyes sharpened.

“By who?””

Rebecca took a breath.

Then she said:

“By someone using Olivia’s name.””

I felt the room tilt.

Someone had impersonated me.

Someone had accessed my private medical records.

Someone had planned this long before tonight.

My father turned the page.

His face became colder.

“Olivia.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He handed me the document.

At the bottom was a signature.

A signature I recognized.

My own name.

But it wasn’t my handwriting.

And beneath it was a hospital authorization stamp.

A fake document.

A fake request.

A fake accusation.

Someone had gone to extraordinary lengths to destroy my marriage.

But why?

Why was my pregnancy so important?

Why was my baby the center of their plan?

Then Daniel suddenly spoke.

Quietly.

Almost to himself.

“I know.””

Everyone looked at him.

His face had lost all color.

“You know what?”” I asked.

Daniel stared at the document.

Then at Chloe.

Then at Eleanor.

And for the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.

“Because two weeks ago…”

He swallowed.

“My mother asked me a question.””

Nobody moved.

“What question?”” my father asked.

Daniel’s voice shook.

“She asked me if I would still love Olivia…”

A pause.

“...if the baby wasn’t mine.””

The ballroom erupted.

But I didn’t hear the voices.

I only heard my own heartbeat.

Because suddenly, I understood.

This wasn’t about embarrassing me.

It wasn’t about a ring.

It wasn’t even about forcing me out of the family.

They had been building something much bigger.

They wanted Daniel to doubt me.

They wanted him to abandon me.

They wanted him to believe my child was a betrayal.

I turned slowly toward Eleanor.

“Why?””

For the first time, she looked nervous.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Nervous.

And that frightened me.

Because people like Eleanor didn’t fear being exposed.

They feared losing control.

My father stepped beside me.

“Eleanor.””

She said nothing.

“Why did you do this?””

The entire ballroom waited.

Then Eleanor looked directly at me.

And smiled faintly.

A smile that made my skin turn cold.

“Because Olivia…”

She glanced at my stomach.

“Your baby was never supposed to inherit anything.””

The room froze.

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you talking about?””

Eleanor’s smile disappeared.

“Ask your daughter what she doesn’t know about her own husband.””

I looked at Daniel.

And he looked away.

That was when I knew.

There was another secret.

One Daniel had hidden from me.

A secret that could explain why the Whitmores were willing to destroy my life.

And when my father reached into his coat and pulled out his phone, I heard him say the words that made everyone in the room understand the night was far from over.

“Find out everything about Daniel Whitmore.””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“Especially what he has been hiding from my daughter.””
