Chapter 9: The Truth About Maya
Nobody moved.
My father-in-law's accusation hung in the attic.
Evelyn stared at him.
“You're still lying.””
He shook his head.
“Not this time.””
I stepped between them.
“Enough.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“Did you switch the babies?””
“No.””
“Did you?””
“No.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Did you?””
She shook her head desperately.
“No.””
“Then who did?””
Silence.
Maya was crying quietly beside the trunk.
Lily stood frozen near the doorway.
I wanted to pull both girls into my arms.
But I didn't know what was true anymore.
I looked at my father-in-law.
“You said Evelyn did it.””
“Yes.””
“Prove it.””
He opened his briefcase.
He pulled out a sealed envelope.
“This is the original hospital report.””
I took it.
The paper was old and brittle.
I read the first page.
Two babies.
Twin girls.
Both born alive.
Both listed under temporary identification numbers.
Then I saw something that made my heart stop.
*Mother: Evelyn Carter.*
*Father: Unknown.*
I looked at him.
“Unknown?””
He nodded.
“Your first wife wasn't the biological mother of either child.””
My head spun.
“Then why did she raise Maya?””
“Because she adopted her.””
I stared at the paper.
“That isn't what you've been telling me.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because Evelyn wanted both girls.””
Evelyn stepped forward.
“I wanted my daughters.””
My father-in-law shook his head.
“You wanted revenge.””
“Against whom?””
“Your sister.””
Evelyn's face hardened.
“She stole everything from me.””
I looked at her.
“What did she steal?””
“Her life.””
I waited.
Evelyn's voice cracked.
“When we found each other, she was married. She had a home. A husband who loved her. A family.””
“You mean me.””
“Yes.””
“And you wanted it?””
“I wanted my sister back.””
Her eyes moved toward Maya.
“But she believed I wanted to take you from her.””
“Did you?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I wanted my daughters.””
“Both?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did only Maya stay with me?””
Evelyn looked at Vanessa.
“Because Vanessa helped my sister hide her.””
I turned to Vanessa.
“Why?””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“Because your wife begged me.””
“Begged you to do what?””
“To take Maya.””
“Why?””
“She knew Evelyn would come for her.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“She knew you were investigating her.””
I frowned.
“What was I investigating?””
Evelyn looked at my father-in-law.
“He was investigating the money.””
I turned.
“What money?””
He said nothing.
Vanessa whispered, “The adoption.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“You bought Maya?””
“No!””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Your wife didn't buy her.””
“Then what money?””
Evelyn answered.
“My father paid someone to make the records disappear.””
“Why?””
“Because one of the girls wasn't legally supposed to exist.””
I looked at Maya.
“What?””
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“She was born from an illegal adoption scheme.””
I stared at her.
“What are you talking about?””
“My father had arranged for infants to be placed with wealthy families.””
My father-in-law snapped:
“That's a lie.””
“You know it's true.””
“I never sold children.””
“You arranged the paperwork.””
“I protected the family.””
“You destroyed it.””
I looked at him.
“Did you arrange Maya's adoption?””
He didn't answer.
“Did you?””
“Yes.””
My knees nearly buckled.
“Why?””
“Because your first wife couldn't have children.””
“She could have adopted legally.””
“Not without exposing Evelyn.””
“Why would adopting a child expose her?””
He closed his eyes.
“Because Evelyn was the biological mother.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She nodded.
“But why hide that?””
“Because Evelyn was under investigation.””
“For what?””
“She had been accused of stealing another child.””
I frowned.
“What?””
Evelyn shook her head.
“That child was mine.””
“Whose child?””
“Mine and your father's.””
My father-in-law went pale.
I stared at him.
“You're saying Evelyn had another child?””
“Yes.””
“Before Maya?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
Evelyn's voice broke.
“My father took him.””
Silence.
“He told me the baby died.””
I looked at my father-in-law.
He said nothing.
Evelyn continued.
“I spent years believing my son was dead.””
I felt a cold pressure in my chest.
“Was he?””
“No.””
My father-in-law whispered, “Evelyn…”
“Tell him.””
He looked at me.
“I don't know where the boy is.””
“You're lying.””
“I swear.””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“You kept records.””
“I destroyed them.””
“You kept one.””
He looked away.
I suddenly understood.
The locked drawer.
The letters.
The photographs.
The DNA reports.
This wasn't just about Maya.
It was about an entire family built on secrets.
I turned to Vanessa.
“Why did you push Maya away from the photograph?””
She started crying.
“Because she looks like Evelyn.””
I frowned.
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It does.””
She pointed toward Maya.
“She has the same birthmark.””
I looked at Maya's shoulder.
A small crescent-shaped mark.
I'd seen it a thousand times.
Vanessa continued.
“Your wife used to say it was proof that Maya was hers.””
Evelyn whispered, “It wasn't.””
“What do you mean?””
“It was proof she was mine.””
I stared at Maya.
Then at Lily.
Two girls.
Two daughters.
One family.
One enormous lie.
My phone buzzed.
I pulled it from my pocket.
A message from an unknown number.
*Stop listening to them.*
Another message appeared.
*Your father-in-law is hiding one final file.*
Then:
*Ask him about the name Daniel Carter.*
I looked at Evelyn.
Her face went white.
“Who is Daniel Carter?””
She didn't answer.
My father-in-law suddenly grabbed his briefcase.
I caught his wrist.
“What is in the file?””
“Let go.””
“No.””
He tried to pull away.
“Marcus, you don't understand.””
“Then make me understand.””
He looked at Evelyn.
Then at Maya.
Then at Lily.
Finally, he whispered:
“Daniel Carter was never a child.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He was the man who raised Evelyn.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.””
My father-in-law opened the briefcase.
A photograph slipped out.
It showed a young man standing beside a woman.
The woman was Evelyn.
The man was me.
But the date written on the back was seventeen years before I had ever met her.
My blood ran cold.
I looked at Evelyn.
She was crying.
“Marcus,” she whispered.
I couldn't speak.
She stepped toward me.
“I knew you before your first wife did.””
My father-in-law's face collapsed.
And then the truth hit me.
The man in the photograph wasn't me.
It was my identical twin brother.
A brother I had never known existed.
And beneath the photograph was one final document.
A birth certificate.
*Father: Daniel Carter.*
*Mother: Unknown.*
*Child: Marcus Reed.*
I looked up.
“That's my name.””
Evelyn nodded.
“And that's why your first wife was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
Evelyn wiped her tears.
“Because Maya wasn't the only person in your family who had been stolen.””
She looked toward the bedroom window.
May you like
Then whispered:
“Your real father is still alive.””
