Amused

Chapter 7: The Girl Behind the Door

The door opened before I could reach it.

A woman stood on the porch.

She was older than the woman in the photographs, but the resemblance was unmistakable. The same dark eyes. The same sharp cheekbones. The same expression that made it impossible to look away.

Evelyn.

But she wasn't alone.

A teenage girl stood beside her.

She looked about thirteen.

Her dark hair fell over one shoulder. She wore a faded denim jacket and white sneakers, and she held the strap of a backpack with both hands.

I stared at her face.

Something inside me recognized her before my mind did.

Evelyn stepped aside.

“Marcus,” she said quietly, “this is Lily.””

The girl looked at me.

“Hi.””

My mouth went dry.

Behind me, Vanessa whispered, “No.””

Lily's eyes moved toward her.

“Hello, Vanessa.””

Vanessa stumbled backward.

“You…”

Lily didn't smile.

“You told me he would never find out.””

I turned sharply.

“Find out what?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Evelyn.

“Who is she?””

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“Your daughter.””

The words should have sounded impossible.

Instead, they felt like the final piece of a puzzle I had been staring at for eleven years without knowing what picture I was looking at.

I looked at Lily again.

“No.””

Evelyn nodded.

“Yes.””

“She can't be.””

“She is.””

My father-in-law suddenly moved toward the door.

“Evelyn, this isn't the way.””

She looked at him.

“You don't get to decide the way anymore.””

“Where is her mother?””

Evelyn's face hardened.

“She died.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“My wife?””

“No.””

Evelyn looked at Lily.

“Her mother is me.””

I couldn't speak.

Lily looked uncomfortable.

She lowered her eyes.

“I don't want to be the reason everyone fights.””

I crouched in front of her.

“What's your name again?””

“Lily.””

“Lily what?””

She hesitated.

“Carter.””

My heart slammed against my ribs.

Carter.

The name from the hospital bracelet.

The name from the birth certificate.

I looked at Evelyn.

“You said Maya was your daughter.””

“She is.””

“And Lily?””

“So is she.””

“How?””

Evelyn took a breath.

“They were twins.””

I looked back at Lily.

Then toward the staircase, where my own daughter was supposed to be safely miles away at my parents' house.

“Then why did everyone tell me Maya was the only baby?””

Evelyn's voice shook.

“Because someone changed the records.””

My father-in-law stepped forward.

“That's enough.””

I turned on him.

“You knew.””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

“You knew I had two daughters.””

“Yes.””

“And you let me believe one of them was dead?””

His silence was an answer.

I grabbed his collar.

“You stole eleven years from me.””

“Marcus!”” Vanessa shouted.

I released him.

He straightened his shirt.

“You think I wanted this?””

“You signed the papers.””

“I was trying to protect my family.””

“Which family?””

He looked at Lily.

“The wrong one.””

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“You hear that, Marcus? He finally admits it.””

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

“Mom.””

Evelyn immediately turned toward her.

“I'm sorry.””

“I don't want to hear them fight.””

I knelt again.

“Lily, nobody is going to hurt you.””

She studied me.

“That's what Vanessa said.””

My blood ran cold.

“When?””

Lily looked at Vanessa.

“Three years ago.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

I stood.

“What happened three years ago?””

Evelyn answered.

“She found Lily.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“You found her?””

Vanessa's voice broke.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“At school.””

“Why?””

“Because Evelyn contacted me.””

“Why would she contact you?””

Vanessa looked at Lily.

“She wanted money.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“That's a lie.””

“You threatened me.””

“I begged you.””

“You told me you'd expose everything.””

“Because you had my child.””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“I didn't take her.””

“No,” Evelyn said.

“You helped hide her.””

I looked at Lily.

She was trembling.

“Lily,” I said softly, “did you know about me?””

She nodded.

“For how long?””

“Always.””

My chest hurt.

“Who told you?””

“My mom.””

“Why didn't you ever come to me?””

She looked down.

“Because Vanessa told my mom you'd hate me.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

She began crying.

“I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That if you knew about Lily, you'd leave Maya.””

I stared at her.

“She was my daughter.””

“I know.””

“You decided I couldn't love two children?””

“No.””

“You decided for me.””

“Yes.””

The admission was barely audible.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“She did more than that.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Don't.””

“She changed Lily's name.””

I looked at Lily.

“Is Carter your real last name?””

She nodded.

“My birth certificate says Reed.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Lily reached into her backpack.

She pulled out a folded document.

“My mom kept this.””

She handed it to me.

I unfolded it.

*Birth Certificate — Baby Girl Reed.*

Father: Marcus Reed.

Mother: Evelyn Carter.

Twin sibling: Baby Girl Carter.

My hands shook.

“Why does Maya's certificate say something different?””

Evelyn looked at my father-in-law.

“Ask him.””

I turned.

He looked exhausted.

“I changed it.””

“Why?””

“Because Evelyn wasn't supposed to have custody.””

“Why?””

“She was young. Unstable. She was being investigated.””

“For what?””

He hesitated.

“Your first wife's death.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Evelyn.

“Were you investigated?””

“Yes.””

“Did they think you killed her?””

“Yes.””

“Did you?””

“No.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I was told you'd never believe me.””

“Who told you?””

She looked directly at Vanessa.

My wife shook her head.

“I didn't.””

Evelyn pulled an envelope from her coat.

“Then explain this.””

She handed it to me.

Inside was a letter addressed to me.

The handwriting belonged to my first wife.

Marcus, if Evelyn ever comes back, listen to her.

I stared at the sentence.

There was more.

She didn't kill me.

My breath caught.

I read the next line.

The person who caused my death is still close to you.

I slowly raised my eyes.

Vanessa was staring at the letter.

Her face had gone completely white.

Then my phone rang.

My mother.

I answered.

“Mom?””

Her voice was frantic.

“Marcus, come home.””

“What happened?””

“It's Maya.””

My stomach dropped.

“What about her?””

“She found something in the attic.””

“What?””

My mother started crying.

“She keeps saying Vanessa lied about her mother.””

I looked at Vanessa.

My mother continued.

“And Marcus…”

“What?””

“She says she found a photograph of herself with Evelyn.””

I closed my eyes.

“Mom, don't let her leave the house.””

“I already locked the doors.””

“Good.””

Then I heard Maya shouting in the background.

“Dad!””

My mother's voice suddenly became distant.

“Maya, wait!””

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“What happened?””

I looked at her.

“Maya knows.””

Her expression changed.

And then she said:

“Marcus, if Maya found the photograph, she also found the letter.””

“What letter?””

May you like

Evelyn's eyes filled with fear.

“The one your wife wrote the night before she died.””
