Chapter 5: The Hospital Bracelet
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
The sentence hung between us like smoke.
“Your first wife gave Maya to me.””
I repeated it slowly.
“You're saying she gave you our daughter?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Why?””
“Because she knew she was dying.””
I felt my knees weaken.
I grabbed the edge of the dresser.
“You knew she was dying?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“She made me promise.””
“What kind of promise?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“That I'd protect Maya from Evelyn.””
“By pretending you didn't know her?””
“She believed Evelyn would come after her.””
“She was right.””
Vanessa flinched.
I pulled the hospital bracelet from the drawer.
The plastic was yellowed with age.
*BABY GIRL CARTER*
My thumb moved over the faded letters.
“Why is her last name Carter?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
“Her last name was mine.””
“I know.””
“She was born Marcus Reed's daughter.””
“Yes.””
“Then why does this say Carter?””
Vanessa took a breath.
“Because your first wife wasn't the one who gave birth to her.””
I looked up.
“What?””
She stepped closer.
“Your wife couldn't have children.””
The room seemed to tilt.
“That isn't true.””
“She couldn't.””
“She told me she was pregnant.””
“I know.””
“She showed me ultrasound pictures.””
“I know.””
“She was sick for months.””
“I know.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“You're telling me she faked an entire pregnancy?””
“No.””
“Then who was pregnant?””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“Evelyn.””
I couldn't process it.
“Evelyn was pregnant?””
“Yes.””
“By whom?””
Vanessa looked away.
I felt a terrible suspicion forming.
“Don't.””
She closed her eyes.
“Marcus…”
“Don't make me ask.””
She didn't answer.
I grabbed the birth certificate.
The mother's name had been scratched out on the photocopy.
I had never noticed it.
A second document lay beneath it.
A handwritten letter.
I unfolded it.
The handwriting was familiar.
My first wife's.
Marcus, if you're reading this, I'm probably already gone.
My hands started shaking.
I need you to know that I loved you. Everything I did was because I loved you. But there is something I could never tell you while I was alive.
I swallowed.
Vanessa stood behind me.
I continued.
Maya is yours.
I stopped.
For one second, relief washed through me.
Then I read the next line.
But I did not give birth to her.
My vision blurred.
Evelyn did.
I lowered the letter.
“Why?””
Vanessa whispered, “Because Evelyn was unstable.””
I turned.
“Don't use that word.””
“She was dangerous.””
“That's not an explanation.””
“She wanted the baby.””
“So?””
“She wanted to raise Maya herself.””
“And my wife?””
“Your wife couldn't accept that.””
I stared at her.
“She stole her sister's baby?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Then what happened?””
“Evelyn gave her the baby.””
“Why?””
“Because Evelyn believed she had to disappear.””
“Disappear from whom?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“From the man who got her pregnant.””
I stared at her.
“Who was he?””
She looked at me.
And I knew before she said it.
“He was your wife's father.””
The room went silent.
I couldn't breathe.
“My father-in-law?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Evelyn had an affair with him.””
“No.””
“It happened before you met your wife.””
“No.””
“She became pregnant.””
I backed away.
“You're lying.””
“I wish I were.””
I looked at the letter again.
There was another page.
I unfolded it.
I found out the truth after I married you.
My eyes moved across the page.
Dad had been seeing Evelyn for years. When she became pregnant, he paid her to leave town. She refused. Then she had Maya.
My hand covered my mouth.
Evelyn blamed me for everything. She said I had taken her place. She said Maya was the only thing she had left.
I looked at Vanessa.
“She knew?””
“Everyone eventually knew.””
“Everyone except me.””
Vanessa nodded.
I continued reading.
The night I died, Evelyn came to the hospital. She wanted Maya. She said she would tell Marcus everything if I didn't give her the baby.
My chest tightened.
I refused.
The next line was barely legible.
Vanessa found me afterward.
I looked up sharply.
“Found you?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Your wife called me.””
“When?””
“An hour before she died.””
“What did she say?””
“She said she needed me.””
“Why you?””
“Because she trusted me.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You lied to me for eleven years because you trusted her?””
“She made me swear.””
“And you obeyed.””
“Yes.””
“Even when I asked questions?””
“Yes.””
“Even when Maya asked about her mother?””
“Yes.””
“Even when Evelyn was watching my daughter?””
Vanessa began crying.
“Yes.””
I threw the letter onto the bed.
“You didn't protect Maya.””
“I did.””
“You isolated her.””
“I kept Evelyn away.””
“You made my daughter feel unwanted in her own home.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I know.””
“And you expect me to forgive you?””
“No.””
Her answer was so quiet that I stopped.
“I don't expect forgiveness.””
“Then what do you expect?””
“I expect you to understand why I did it.””
“I understand perfectly.””
“No, you don't.””
She walked to the dresser.
She opened the drawer again.
Then she reached behind the back panel.
Her fingers found something.
She pulled out a small black envelope.
“This is why I was afraid.””
She handed it to me.
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A man stood outside a hospital.
My father-in-law.
Beside him was Evelyn.
And in Evelyn's arms was a newborn baby.
Maya.
I stared at the picture.
On the back, someone had written:
*He wasn't Maya's father. He was only the beginning.*
My eyes lifted.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
“You're lying again.””
“I swear.””
The front door downstairs slammed.
We both froze.
Then we heard footsteps.
A man's voice called from the hallway.
“Marcus?””
I knew that voice.
My father-in-law.
He had never come to our house without calling first.
I walked toward the bedroom door.
Vanessa grabbed my arm.
“Don't.””
“Why?””
May you like
She whispered:
“Because he wasn't supposed to know you're reading that letter.””
