Amused

Chapter 8: The Man Behind The Perfect Family

Robert Peterson looked exactly the way he always had.

That was the terrifying part.

Same expensive suit.

Same calm expression.

Same polite smile he wore at every holiday dinner.

The kind of smile people trusted.

The kind of smile that made strangers say, “He seems like a wonderful man.””

But standing in Rebecca’s apartment, I finally understood something.

Danger didn’t always look dangerous.

Sometimes it looked like a grandfather bringing flowers to Thanksgiving.

“Where is Rebecca?””

Robert closed the door behind him.

“You came here because you wanted answers.””

I stepped back.

“Where is she?””

He ignored the question.

“Chloe, you are emotional right now.””

I almost laughed.

“Emotional?””

“Yes.””

“You came into a woman’s apartment who disappeared, and you’re telling me I’m emotional?””

His expression didn’t change.

“That woman has always been unstable.””

There it was.

The same pattern.

Discredit the person.

Protect the family.

I looked at the photograph on the wall.

“Is Emma real?””

For the first time, his face shifted.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

A tiny crack.

“You don’t know what you’re asking.””

“Yes, I do.””

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“You think you understand because you found a few papers.””

I held up the folder.

“I found enough.””

Robert sighed.

“Daniel has always been weak.””

My jaw tightened.

“Don’t talk about your son like that.””

“Why not? It’s true.””

“You taught him to be afraid.””

Robert smiled.

“I taught him to survive.””

The words made my skin crawl.

“You call this survival?””

“I call it protecting what matters.””

I stared at him.

“And what matters?””

“Our family.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I pointed at the photograph.

“What matters is your image.””

His smile disappeared.

For the first time, I saw the real Robert.

Cold.

Calculated.

“You’re making a mistake, Chloe.””

“No.””

I stepped forward.

“You made the mistake.””

He tilted his head.

“You think because you are Lily’s mother, you have power.””

“I do.””

“You don’t understand how quickly people believe a story when it comes from the right person.””

My stomach tightened.

“What story?””

He smiled again.

“The one where a mother with anger issues attacks people.””

I froze.

“You’re going to accuse me?””

“I don’t have to.””

He looked toward the door.

“Others will.””

The threat was obvious.

I reached for my phone.

“Where is Rebecca?””

Robert’s expression hardened.

“She made choices.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means she should have stayed quiet.””

My heart raced.

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?””

His voice was panicked.

“Chloe, get out of there.””

I looked at Robert.

“How do you know?””

“Because my father is there.””

Robert watched me silently.

Daniel continued.

“Listen to me. Don’t argue. Don’t let him convince you of anything.””

I lowered my voice.

“Daniel, what happened to Emma?””

Silence.

Then:

“I know.””

My breath caught.

“You know?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

His voice broke.

“Because I found out years ago.””

I looked at Robert.

The man who had raised him.

“What did you find?””

Daniel whispered:

“Emma wasn’t lost.””

My heart stopped.

“Then where is she?””

Another silence.

Then:

“She was adopted.””

I stared at Robert.

He looked completely calm.

Like this was a conversation about the weather.

“By who?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Someone connected to our family.””

My hand shook.

“Who?””

Before he answered, Robert stepped closer.

“You don’t want to hear that.””

I looked at him.

“Yes, I do.””

He smiled sadly.

“You think the truth will make you feel better.””

“No.””

I held his gaze.

“I think the truth will make you understand.””

Robert looked at my phone.

Then said:

“Daniel never told you the most important part.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“What part?””

Robert’s smile returned.

“The reason Megan hates Lily.””

I froze.

“What are you talking about?””

He looked directly at me.

“Because Lily was never supposed to exist.””

The room went silent.

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

Robert continued:

“Five years ago, Daniel made a decision.””

I looked at my phone.

“Daniel?””

Robert nodded.

“The same year Megan lost Emma.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“No.””

“Yes.””

He stepped closer.

“Your husband chose you.””

I felt sick.

“What does that mean?””

Robert looked almost satisfied.

“It means Megan didn’t lose everything.””

He paused.

“She lost because Daniel walked away.””

I backed away.

“No.””

Robert smiled.

“And Lily became the reminder.””

My phone slipped slightly in my hand.

Then Daniel’s voice came through.

“Chloe…”

I couldn’t speak.

May you like

Because suddenly I didn’t know who the victim was anymore.

And I didn’t know who had been lying to me.
