Amused

Chapter 6: The Truth They Buried Before Lily

I didn’t open the envelope again for almost an hour.

It sat on the kitchen counter.

A small piece of paper.

A few words.

But it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

Five years ago.

The year Lily was born.

The year my entire life changed.

The year I married into the Peterson family.

I kept thinking about that time.

How everyone had been so excited.

How Carol had cried when she first held Lily.

How Robert had proudly told everyone his first granddaughter would carry the Peterson name.

How Megan had smiled.

A perfect family.

That was what everyone saw.

But now I wondered what I had missed.

I called Daniel.

He answered immediately.

“Did you read it?””

“Yes.””

“Then you know.””

“No.””

My voice was cold.

“I know nothing.””

He was quiet.

“Tell me.””

“I can’t over the phone.””

“You’re the one who left the note.””

“I know.””

“Then finish what you started.””

A long pause.

“Meet me somewhere.””

I almost refused.

But I needed answers.

“Where?””

“The park near Lily’s preschool.””

An hour later, I sat across from my husband on a wooden bench.

For the first time in eight years, Daniel looked like a stranger.

Not because he looked different.

Because I finally saw the fear in his eyes.

“Start talking.””

He looked down.

“Five years ago, before Lily was born, Megan had an incident.””

“What kind of incident?””

“She was pregnant.””

I frowned.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

Daniel swallowed.

“She was supposed to have a baby.””

I stared at him.

“Daniel.””

“She lost the baby.””

I waited.

Because I knew there was more.

“Megan blamed someone.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“Me.””

The air left my lungs.

“What?””

“She blamed me because I told her she needed help. She was angry all the time. She would scream at people. She would break things.””

I stared at him.

“And?””

“And she said I ruined her life.””

I shook my head.

“Why would that make her hit Lily?””

Daniel looked away.

“Because Lily was born six months later.””

I didn’t understand.

Then he said:

“Megan never accepted that our family moved on.””

A chill went through me.

“She was jealous of Lily?””

“Yes.””

I thought about all those comments.

All those little moments.

The birthday cake.

The drawings.

The turkey.

It wasn’t random.

It was building.

“She hated my daughter because she reminded her of what she lost.””

Daniel nodded.

“But that’s not the worst part.””

My stomach tightened.

“What is?””

He looked at me.

“Robert knew.””

I froze.

“Your father knew Megan was struggling?””

“More than that.””

“What does that mean?””

Daniel’s eyes filled with shame.

“He covered for her.””

I stood.

“Covered for her?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Every time Megan hurt someone, Robert paid people to stay quiet.””

I thought of Rebecca.

The documents.

The warning.

My hands started shaking.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel looked broken.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“My family.””

The honesty hurt.

Because it was the first honest thing he had said in days.

“I thought I could keep you away from the worst of it.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You didn’t keep me away.””

“No.””

He looked at the ground.

“I brought you into it.””

A tear slipped down my face.

Not because I felt sorry for him.

Because I was mourning the person I thought he was.

Then Daniel reached into his jacket.

He handed me another envelope.

“This is the last thing.””

I looked at it.

“What is it?””

“Something my father doesn’t know I have.””

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A hospital photograph.

A baby bracelet.

And a document.

My eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

Because the name written there wasn’t Lily.

It was another child.

Another Peterson secret.

I looked at Daniel.

“What am I looking at?””

His face went pale.

And before he could answer, his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel?””

Slowly, he turned the phone toward me.

The name on the screen made my blood run cold.

*Megan.*

Then the call connected by itself.

And Megan’s voice came through the speaker.

“I know you told Chloe.””

Daniel froze.

May you like

Megan continued:

“And now she’s going to learn what you did to my baby.””
