Chapter 7: The Child Nobody Spoke About
For three seconds, nobody said anything.
Not me.
Not Daniel.
Not even Megan.
The only sound was the wind moving through the trees around the empty park.
Then Megan laughed.
A soft, bitter laugh.
The kind of laugh people make when they believe they still have control.
“Did you really think you could hide it forever, Daniel?””
Daniel’s face had lost all color.
“Megan, stop.””
“No.””
Her voice sharpened.
“No, I’m done protecting you.””
I stared at him.
Protecting him?
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What is she talking about?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That was all I needed.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“I can explain.””
I shook my head slowly.
“I’m tired of explanations.””
Megan heard me.
“Oh, Chloe, you have no idea how much he has lied to you.””
My stomach turned.
“Then tell me.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His silence was an answer.
I lifted the phone.
“Megan, tell me.””
There was a pause.
Then she said:
“Five years ago, before Lily was born, I had a daughter.””
The words landed harder than I expected.
I looked at Daniel.
His eyes closed.
“She was perfect,” Megan continued.
“My little girl.””
Her voice cracked for the first time.
“I held her for twelve hours before they took her away.””
I didn’t know what to say.
For a moment, the anger disappeared.
Because grief was still grief.
Even when it belonged to someone who had hurt my child.
But then Megan continued.
“And Daniel was the reason.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Megan, no.””
“Yes.””
Her voice became cold again.
“He told everyone I was unstable.””
“That’s not true,” Daniel whispered.
“You convinced them I couldn’t be trusted.””
I looked between them.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
“I need to tell you the truth.””
I crossed my arms.
“Finally.””
He sat down on the bench.
“I found Megan after she had been drinking.””
Megan interrupted.
“I had one glass of wine.””
“You were driving.””
Her silence was immediate.
I looked at Daniel.
“You never told me this.””
“Because Robert handled it.””
My stomach tightened.
“Handled what?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Megan had been drinking. She got into an accident.””
I covered my mouth.
“She was pregnant.””
He nodded.
“The doctors said the accident caused complications.””
The pieces started connecting.
Megan had lost her baby.
She blamed Daniel.
Robert buried it.
And somehow, my daughter became part of that old wound.
But there was still something missing.
“Why does the document say another child’s name?””
Daniel looked at the envelope in my hand.
“I don’t know.””
Megan answered.
“I do.””
Her voice became quiet.
“Because that baby didn’t die.””
The world seemed to stop.
I stared at the phone.
“What did you say?””
Daniel looked confused.
“Megan.””
“No.””
She laughed again.
“You’re still pretending.””
I felt a chill.
“Pretending what?””
Megan whispered:
“That your family only has one secret.””
Daniel grabbed the phone.
“Megan, enough.””
But she continued.
“Chloe, ask your husband where the baby went.””
My hands started shaking.
Daniel ended the call.
Immediately.
For several seconds, he just stared at the ground.
“Tell me.””
He didn’t respond.
“Daniel.””
His voice was barely audible.
“I don’t know everything.””
I laughed.
A painful, empty sound.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
“You married me. You had a child with me. And there is another child connected to your family that you don’t know about?””
He looked devastated.
“I know what it sounds like.””
“It sounds like I married into a nightmare.””
He looked away.
I hated that I understood his expression.
Because he looked trapped.
But I was done feeling sorry for trapped people who allowed innocent people to get hurt.
“I need to see those documents.””
Daniel handed me the envelope.
Inside was the hospital record.
The name at the top:
*Emma Grace Peterson.*
Mother:
*Megan Peterson.*
Birth date:
Five years ago.
The same year Lily was born.
My heart pounded.
“She had a living child?””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
I looked at the paperwork.
There was another document.
A transfer form.
A signature.
Robert Peterson.
My father-in-law.
I stared at the signature.
“He moved the baby?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“No.””
But even he didn’t believe himself.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Rebecca.
*I found more records. Come alone. It’s about Robert.*
I showed Daniel.
His expression turned serious.
“You can’t go.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
“Because if Robert knows Rebecca is talking…”
“What?””
Daniel swallowed.
“She won’t be safe.””
That sentence terrified me.
Because for the first time, Daniel wasn’t protecting his family.
He was warning me.
I drove to Rebecca’s house alone.
Not because I trusted Daniel.
Because I needed answers.
Her apartment door was slightly open when I arrived.
“Rebecca?””
No answer.
I pushed the door.
“Rebecca?””
The room was dark.
A cup of coffee sat untouched on the table.
Her bag was on the floor.
And on the wall across from me was a photograph.
A photograph of Rebecca holding a baby.
I stepped closer.
The baby wore a hospital bracelet.
I looked at the name.
Emma.
Then I heard footsteps behind me.
I turned.
May you like
And Robert Peterson was standing in the doorway.
“You really should have listened to the warning.””
