Amused

Chapter 8: The Truth Isabella Buried

I read the message three times.

Not because I didn't understand the words.

Because I couldn't accept them.

*I never disappeared.*

*I was hiding.*

*Because I knew the truth would destroy all of you.*

Those sentences changed everything.

Again.

I was beginning to understand that every answer in this story came with another question waiting behind it.

Isabella Reyes was alive.

She had not been taken.

She had not been found.

She had chosen to return.

And the person beside her was the man everyone believed was dead.

Vivian's father.

Alessandro Castellano.

The same man who had supposedly died six months earlier.

The same man who had helped my father bury the truth.

The same man who was now standing beside Isabella like they had been waiting for this moment.

Clara looked at the photograph in my hand.

Her face was unreadable.

"She's with him.""

Nobody answered.

Because we all saw it.

The person Clara spent fifteen years believing had abandoned her was standing beside the man connected to the destruction of her childhood.

But Isabella wasn't afraid.

That was the part I couldn't understand.

People did not stand calmly beside their enemies.

Unless they weren't enemies.

Or unless we had misunderstood everything.

Daniel stepped forward.

"We need to find them before they disappear again.""

I looked at him.

"How?""

"We track the location from the message.""

"Can you?""

He nodded.

"But we need to move quickly.""

Vivian was still staring at the photo.

Her father's face was partially visible.

But she knew.

There was no doubt.

"I don't understand.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

"My father was dead.""

She said it like she was trying to convince herself.

"I saw him.""

"What do you mean?""

"His body.""

The room went quiet.

"You saw the body?""

She nodded.

"I identified him.""

Daniel frowned.

"Are you certain?""

Vivian looked offended.

"Yes.""

But the confidence faded quickly.

Because even she knew something was wrong.

"Unless...""

She stopped.

"Unless what?""

She looked at me.

"Unless I was shown what someone wanted me to see.""

That sentence stayed with me.

Because it sounded familiar.

My entire life had been built around what people wanted me to see.

We found Isabella two hours later.

Not because it was easy.

Because she wanted us to.

That was the first thing Daniel said when we arrived.

The abandoned building stood outside the city, hidden behind old warehouses and empty roads.

A place where secrets could survive.

The kind of place powerful people used when they wanted the world to forget.

The police surrounded the area.

But Daniel insisted we go inside first.

"Why?""

I asked.

"Because if Isabella wanted to disappear, she would have.""

He looked toward the building.

"She wants you to hear something.""

Clara walked beside me.

She had been quiet the entire drive.

Too quiet.

I glanced at her.

"You can leave.""

She looked at me.

"What?""

"You don't have to do this.""

Her expression hardened.

"No.""

A pause.

"I've spent my whole life looking for answers.""

She looked toward the building.

"I'm not walking away now.""

I nodded.

Because I understood.

Some truths hurt.

But not knowing hurt longer.

Inside, the building was empty.

Dust covered the floor.

Broken windows allowed the moonlight to enter.

Then we heard a voice.

"Vincent.""

We stopped.

Isabella stepped out of the shadows.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Clara froze.

The two women stared at each other.

Fifteen years of pain stood between them.

Finally, Isabella whispered:

"My daughter.""

Clara's face tightened.

"Don't call me that.""

The words hurt Isabella.

I saw it.

But she accepted it.

"I deserve that.""

Clara laughed bitterly.

"You deserve more than that.""

Isabella lowered her eyes.

"Yes.""

Nobody expected that.

No excuses.

No defense.

Just acceptance.

"Why?""

Clara asked.

The question carried everything.

"Why did you leave me?""

Isabella looked at her.

"I didn't.""

Clara shook her head.

"I waited.""

Her voice broke.

"I waited for you.""

Isabella started crying.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

Clara stepped forward.

"You don't know what it's like to wake up every morning wondering why your mother didn't love you enough to come back.""

Isabella closed her eyes.

"I came back.""

"Fifteen years later.""

"I was protecting you.""

"From what?""

Isabella looked at me.

Then Vivian.

Then back at Clara.

"From the truth.""

Clara shook her head.

"Everyone says that.""

A bitter smile.

"Everyone says they're protecting me.""

She pointed at me.

"His father said it.""

She pointed at Vivian.

"Your enemies said it.""

She touched her chest.

"And now you say it.""

Her voice dropped.

"But all anyone ever did was decide what I was allowed to know.""

The words hit everyone.

Because they were true.

Isabella stepped closer.

"I was wrong.""

Clara looked surprised.

"I should have told you.""

"Yes.""

"I should have trusted you.""

"Yes.""

"I should have fought harder to come back.""

Tears filled Isabella's eyes.

"But I was afraid.""

Clara looked away.

"Of what?""

Isabella looked at me.

"Of him.""

Everyone followed her gaze.

A man stepped out from behind a pillar.

Alessandro Castellano.

Vivian stopped breathing.

"Father.""

The man looked older than his photographs.

But alive.

His eyes moved across the room.

Then stopped on Vivian.

"Hello, daughter.""

She stared.

"You died.""

A faint smile appeared.

"That's what everyone needed to believe.""

Her expression changed.

Not anger.

Shock.

"You lied to me.""

He didn't deny it.

"I protected you.""

Vivian laughed.

A broken sound.

"Everyone uses that word.""

Alessandro ignored her.

His eyes moved to me.

"Vincent Moretti.""

I stepped forward.

"You know me.""

"I knew you before you knew yourself.""

I hated how similar that sounded to my father.

"What do you want?""

He looked at Clara.

"The truth.""

Clara laughed.

"Now?""

He ignored her.

"The truth about what happened fifteen years ago.""

I stared.

"You helped my father.""

"Yes.""

The answer was immediate.

Honest.

Unexpected.

"And Isabella?""

"I helped her disappear.""

Clara looked at him.

"You?""

He nodded.

"Because your father was going to destroy her.""

I frowned.

"Then why hide her?""

"Because your father wasn't the only threat.""

The room went silent.

"What does that mean?""

Alessandro looked at Isabella.

Then at me.

"Your father believed he controlled everyone.""

A pause.

"He was wrong.""

"Who controlled him?""

Alessandro reached into his coat.

Pulled out a folder.

And placed it on the table.

"Someone above him.""

I opened it.

Inside were financial records.

Names.

Transactions.

A network.

Not just my father's company.

Not just the Castellano family.

Something much larger.

"What is this?""

Alessandro looked at me.

"The reason Isabella disappeared.""

I turned the page.

Then froze.

Because one name appeared again and again.

A name I recognized.

A name that made Vivian step back.

"No.""

She whispered.

I looked at her.

"What?""

She stared at the document.

"That's impossible.""

The name was written clearly.

*Moretti Foundation.*

My family's charity.

The organization everyone believed represented my father's legacy.

The organization I had taken control of after his death.

I looked at Alessandro.

"What are you saying?""

His face was serious.

"Your father wasn't hiding his crimes.""

A pause.

"He was hiding who he worked for.""

The air left my lungs.

"Who?""

Alessandro looked toward the darkness behind us.

Then said:

"The person who has been cleaning up his mistakes for fifteen years.""

The lights suddenly turned on.

Everyone turned.

A figure stood at the entrance.

Someone who should not have been there.

Someone who had been with me all night.

Someone I trusted.

Daniel.

But he wasn't alone.

A second person stood behind him.

Holding a gun.

Daniel looked at me.

And whispered:

"I'm sorry, Vincent.""

My blood ran cold.

Because I finally understood.

The person destroying the evidence.

The person following Isabella.

The person controlling the secrets.

May you like

Had never been outside the room.

They had been standing beside me the entire time.
