Chapter 6: The Daughter My Father Hid From Me
There are some truths that arrive so violently, your mind protects you from them.
It slows everything down.
It turns voices into distant sounds.
It makes the person standing in front of you feel like a stranger.
That was what happened when Isabella Reyes said Clara was my father's daughter.
For several seconds, I forgot how to breathe.
I looked at Clara.
She looked back at me.
And in that moment, I saw the same confusion reflected in her eyes.
She wasn't just shocked.
She was destroyed.
Because while my entire world was collapsing, hers was being rewritten.
The woman she believed was her mother had just told her she had been living under a false name.
The man she believed was a monster was suddenly part of her identity.
And I...
I was standing in the middle of it.
The son of the man who had caused all of this.
"You're lying.""
Clara's voice was barely above a whisper.
Isabella closed her eyes.
"I wish I was.""
"No.""
Clara shook her head.
"No, you don't get to come back after fifteen years and tell me my whole life is fake.""
A nurse appeared at the door after hearing the raised voices.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
"Give us a moment.""
The nurse looked uncertain but eventually left.
Clara turned back.
"Tell me the truth.""
Isabella looked at her.
"I am.""
"No.""
Clara wiped her face angrily.
"You are telling me a story.""
She pointed toward me.
"Because of him.""
My chest tightened.
"Clara—"
"No.""
She looked at me.
"You don't get to comfort me right now.""
The words hurt because they were fair.
She had every reason to hate me.
Even though I had nothing to do with what happened.
My bloodline was enough.
"My whole life," she continued, "I thought I was fighting against your family.""
Her voice broke.
"I thought your father destroyed mine.""
Isabella looked down.
"He did.""
Everyone went still.
Clara stared.
"What?""
Isabella's expression was filled with pain.
"Vincent's father destroyed our lives.""
I looked at her.
"But you said he saved you.""
"He did both.""
That answer cut through the room.
I stepped closer.
"Explain.""
Isabella looked at me.
"Your father was not a good man.""
The words were difficult to hear.
But I didn't look away.
"He was brilliant. He was charming. He could make anyone believe anything.""
She glanced at Clara.
"That included me.""
Clara swallowed.
"Was he my father?""
Isabella nodded slowly.
"Yes.""
The room went silent.
"How?""
Isabella took a deep breath.
"Before he married your mother, before he became the man everyone feared, he was different.""
I almost interrupted.
But I stopped.
Because I wanted to know.
I needed to know.
"He and I met when we were young," Isabella continued.
"We worked together. We believed we could build something better than the companies our families inherited.""
She looked at me.
"Then he changed.""
"What happened?""
"He realized power mattered more than people.""
Her voice became bitter.
"He started making decisions that hurt others. When I confronted him, he told me I was being naive.""
Clara listened silently.
"Then I discovered what he was doing with Moretti Industries.""
"The contracts?""
Isabella nodded.
"The forced acquisitions. The manipulation.""
She looked at Clara.
"I wanted to expose him.""
Clara's face tightened.
"But you didn't.""
"No.""
"Why?""
Isabella looked down.
"Because I found out I was pregnant.""
The answer landed heavily.
"My father knew?""
"Yes.""
"And?""
Isabella's eyes filled.
"He said he would take care of us.""
A bitter smile appeared.
"I believed him.""
I felt sick.
"What happened?""
"He changed his mind.""
The room became colder.
"He told me a child connected to a scandal would destroy his future.""
I clenched my fists.
"He wanted you gone.""
"Yes.""
Clara whispered:
"And you let him?""
Isabella looked at her.
"No.""
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"I fought.""
The silence stretched.
"Then what happened the night I disappeared?""
Isabella looked at me.
"Your father came to my house.""
My stomach tightened.
"He knew I had copies of the documents proving what he did.""
"The evidence.""
"Yes.""
"What did he do?""
Isabella looked away.
"He begged me.""
I frowned.
"Begged?""
"Not threatened.""
She looked confused even remembering it.
"He said he had made mistakes. He said he wanted to fix things.""
Clara stared.
"You trusted him.""
"I wanted to.""
Isabella closed her eyes.
"Because despite everything, he was still your father.""
The words hit me.
"My father?""
She nodded.
"He held you when you were born.""
I froze.
"What?""
Isabella looked at me.
"You were there.""
The room stopped.
"No.""
"You were eight years old.""
I searched my memory.
Nothing.
Only fragments.
A hospital hallway.
My mother crying.
My father telling me not to ask questions.
"I don't remember.""
"I know.""
Isabella's voice softened.
"Your father made sure you didn't.""
I stepped back.
A terrible thought entered my mind.
"Did he erase her from my life?""
Nobody answered.
That was answer enough.
Two hours later, we were back at the palazzo.
The engagement party had officially ended.
The guests were gone.
The flowers remained.
The champagne remained.
The perfect night Vivian had created was still sitting there untouched.
A beautiful scene after a disaster.
Like nothing had happened.
But everything had.
I stood alone in the ballroom.
The same place where I had stopped Vivian from striking Clara.
Now I was realizing my entire life had been built on a different kind of violence.
A quieter one.
A hidden one.
Footsteps approached.
Vivian.
She stopped several feet away.
"I heard.""
I didn't turn.
"Everyone heard.""
"I mean I heard the full story.""
I looked at her.
"What do you want?""
She looked at the floor.
"I don't know.""
That was the first honest answer she had given me.
"You should hate me.""
I said nothing.
"I knew about Isabella.""
My expression changed.
"What?""
Vivian looked up.
"I didn't know Clara was your father's daughter.""
"Then what did you know?""
She took a breath.
"I knew Isabella was alive.""
My anger returned.
"When?""
"Three months ago.""
"And you said nothing?""
"I was trying to understand what happened.""
"You were trying to control it.""
Her silence confirmed it.
I looked away.
"Why did you really invite Clara tonight?""
Vivian hesitated.
Then answered.
"Because I wanted her close.""
The honesty surprised me.
"Why?""
"Because someone was watching her.""
I frowned.
"Who?""
"I don't know.""
"You're telling me someone dangerous was after Clara, and you brought her into a room full of people?""
Her eyes closed.
"I thought I could protect her.""
I laughed quietly.
"You couldn't even stop yourself from hurting her.""
The words hit.
She nodded.
"I know.""
For once, she didn't defend herself.
"I made a terrible choice.""
She looked at the empty ballroom.
"But I need you to understand something.""
"What?""
"Your father wasn't the only person hiding things.""
I stared at her.
"What does that mean?""
She reached into her purse.
Pulled out a small device.
A recording drive.
"I found this in my father's safe.""
I didn't take it.
"What is it?""
"Your father's final recording.""
My heart stopped.
"My father is dead.""
"I know.""
"Then why?""
"Because he recorded it before he died.""
She stepped closer.
"And he left instructions.""
"What instructions?""
Her voice lowered.
"He said only one person should hear it.""
I looked at the device.
"Who?""
Vivian looked directly at me.
"You.""
I took it.
The small object felt heavier than it should have.
"Why didn't you give this to me before?""
She looked away.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of what?""
She swallowed.
"Of what he would reveal about me.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
Before she could answer, Daniel rushed into the ballroom.
His expression was urgent.
"Mr. Moretti.""
I turned.
"What happened?""
He held a phone in his hand.
"The police called.""
"What about?""
His eyes moved between me and Vivian.
Then he said:
"Isabella Reyes disappeared from the hospital.""
My blood ran cold.
"What?""
"Security footage shows someone entering her room.""
"Who?""
Daniel hesitated.
Then showed me the image.
A person in a dark coat standing outside Isabella's room.
The face was partially hidden.
But I recognized the posture.
The way they stood.
The way they held themselves.
A person who believed they belonged anywhere.
I looked at Vivian.
She went pale.
Because she recognized the person too.
"Who is it?""
I asked.
Vivian whispered:
"That's impossible.""
"Who?""
She stared at the screen.
And said the words that changed everything.
"That's my father.""
I felt the room spin.
Because Vivian's father had been dead for six months.
May you like
And the person on the security camera was walking away from the hospital carrying Isabella Reyes with him.
Alive.
