Chapter 7: The Man Who Returned From the Grave
There are lies that hurt because they hide the truth.
And then there are lies that hurt because they make you question reality itself.
That was what happened when Vivian told me the person who took Isabella from the hospital was her father.
A dead man.
A man whose funeral she had attended.
A man whose ashes were supposedly scattered across the Italian coast six months earlier.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Not Daniel.
Not Vivian.
Not me.
The only sound was the rain hitting the tall windows of the ballroom.
Then I looked at the security image again.
The figure was blurry.
The face was hidden.
It could have been anyone.
But Vivian wasn't looking at the screen like she was guessing.
She was looking at it like she was remembering.
"You're sure?""
My voice sounded distant.
Vivian nodded slowly.
"I know how he walks.""
I stared at her.
"That isn't enough.""
"I know.""
She looked at the image.
"But I also know his habits.""
"What habits?""
"He always wears his watch on his right wrist.""
I looked closer.
The figure's hand was visible.
A dark watch.
On the right wrist.
My stomach tightened.
"That doesn't prove anything.""
"No.""
Vivian's voice dropped.
"But this does.""
She reached for the image.
The person was carrying something.
A small object hanging from their hand.
A ring.
Even from the blurry photograph, it was noticeable.
A large black stone.
I looked at Vivian.
"You know that ring?""
She nodded.
"My father's signet ring.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Miss Castellano, are you saying your father faked his death?""
Vivian didn't answer.
Because she didn't have one.
Instead, she looked at the device in my hand.
"The recording.""
I understood immediately.
My father.
Her father.
Two men who had spent decades hiding things.
Two families built on secrets.
Maybe their deaths were not the end of their stories.
Maybe they were just another lie.
"Where can we listen to it?""
Daniel looked around.
"Not here.""
I agreed.
The ballroom felt like a graveyard.
Too many memories.
Too many ghosts.
We moved to the library.
The same room where I had taken my attorney's call earlier that night.
The same room where I thought my biggest problem was a business negotiation.
I placed the recording device on the table.
Everyone gathered around.
Clara stood near the fireplace.
She had barely spoken since leaving the hospital.
I couldn't blame her.
Her entire identity had been ripped apart in a single evening.
I looked at her.
"Are you okay?""
She almost smiled.
It was a sad, empty expression.
"Do you really want the honest answer?""
"Yes.""
"No.""
The honesty hurt.
"I don't know who I am.""
I wanted to say something.
Anything.
But there were no words that could fix something like that.
Vivian looked at her.
"I'm sorry.""
Clara looked at her.
"For what?""
Vivian swallowed.
"For tonight.""
The silence between them was heavy.
"You don't get to apologize for everything with one sentence.""
"I know.""
"Then why say it?""
"Because it's the only thing I have.""
Clara looked away.
For the first time, I saw something other than hatred between them.
Two people who had both been hurt by the same world.
Just in different ways.
Daniel connected the device.
A moment of static filled the room.
Then a voice.
My father's voice.
Everyone froze.
Even me.
I had not heard it in three years.
Not since the day he died.
"Vincent.""
Just my name.
And suddenly I was eight years old again.
Standing in his office.
Trying to impress him.
Trying to become someone he would be proud of.
The recording continued.
"If you are hearing this, then I am gone.""
A pause.
"I know you will have questions.""
I laughed quietly.
Of course he knew.
He always knew.
"I also know you will be angry.""
I looked at Clara.
Then Vivian.
Then the device.
"You have every right to be.""
My father's voice sounded older than I remembered.
Tired.
"Because I spent my life protecting the wrong things.""
The room went silent.
"I protected my company.""
A pause.
"I protected my reputation.""
Another pause.
"But I failed to protect the people who trusted me.""
Clara closed her eyes.
My father's words were hurting her.
But she kept listening.
"I need you to understand something, Vincent.""
The recording crackled.
"Isabella Reyes was never my enemy.""
My heart tightened.
"She was the person who knew me before I became someone I hated.""
Nobody moved.
"She knew what I had done.""
A breath.
"And she knew what I was capable of.""
Vivian whispered:
"He's admitting it.""
I didn't answer.
The recording continued.
"When Isabella discovered my actions, she wanted to expose me.""
The voice became quieter.
"I deserved it.""
That sentence shocked me more than anything.
My father admitting guilt.
The man who never apologized.
Never admitted mistakes.
Never lowered his head.
"I begged her not to.""
The recording paused.
"Not because I feared losing my company.""
A longer pause.
"Because I feared losing my son.""
My chest tightened.
"Vincent, you were eight years old when you met Clara.""
I looked at Clara.
She looked back.
"You don't remember because I made sure you wouldn't.""
The room froze.
"I was afraid.""
His voice broke slightly.
"I was afraid you would see me differently.""
A bitter laugh.
"You would have been right.""
Nobody spoke.
"I made Isabella disappear from your life.""
Clara covered her mouth.
"I convinced myself it was temporary.""
The recording continued.
"I told myself I would fix things later.""
A pause.
"But later never came.""
The sound of breathing filled the room.
Then:
"Vivian Castellano's father helped me hide the truth.""
Vivian went still.
"Together, we created a story.""
The words were clear.
"We told people Isabella abandoned her daughter.""
Clara's face changed.
"No...""
My father's voice continued.
"That was a lie.""
The room felt smaller.
"Isabella tried to protect Clara.""
A pause.
"She tried to protect me too.""
I looked at Vivian.
Her eyes were filled with tears.
"Because unlike me, Isabella believed people could change.""
The recording crackled.
Then my father's voice became urgent.
"If Clara has found this recording, then something has gone wrong.""
A pause.
"Someone is trying to erase the truth again.""
Daniel looked at me.
Everyone understood.
The person who took Isabella.
The person who destroyed the archives.
The person who was still moving in the shadows.
My father continued.
"Vincent, you must not trust anyone connected to the Castellano family.""
Vivian flinched.
But the recording wasn't finished.
"Except one person.""
Everyone waited.
My father's final words came slowly.
"Vivian.""
The room went completely silent.
Vivian looked shocked.
"What?""
The recording continued.
"She knows what her father did.""
A pause.
"But she does not know the full truth.""
I stared at Vivian.
My father had trusted her?
After everything?
"Vincent, if Vivian gives you this recording, it means she finally chose the right thing.""
A long silence.
Then:
"Trust her.""
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
The silence afterward was almost painful.
I looked at Vivian.
She looked as confused as I felt.
"My father trusted you.""
She shook her head.
"I didn't know.""
"Didn't know what?""
She looked at the device.
"That he knew.""
Before I could respond, Daniel's phone rang.
He answered quickly.
Then his expression changed.
"What?""
He listened.
Everyone watched him.
Then he looked at me.
"Mr. Moretti...""
Something in his voice made me stand.
"What happened?""
He lowered the phone.
"They found Isabella.""
Relief lasted half a second.
Then disappeared.
"Where?""
Daniel swallowed.
"In an abandoned building outside the city.""
"Is she alive?""
He looked at Clara.
Then answered:
"Yes.""
A breath escaped the room.
Then Daniel continued.
"But there's a problem.""
My stomach tightened.
"What?""
He hesitated.
"She wasn't taken there by force.""
"What?""
"The security team found her walking inside willingly.""
I frowned.
"That makes no sense.""
Daniel handed me the phone.
There was a photo attached.
Isabella standing in the abandoned building.
Standing beside the man from the security footage.
The man everyone believed was dead.
But the part that froze my blood wasn't that he was alive.
It was what Isabella was doing.
She wasn't afraid.
She wasn't trapped.
She was holding his hand.
And beneath the photo was a message.
A message sent from Isabella's phone.
*I never disappeared.*
May you like
*I was hiding.*
*Because I knew the truth would destroy all of you.*
