Amused

Chapter 8: The Mother Who Waited in the Shadows

I couldn’t move.

The stranger stood in the doorway holding a photograph of a woman I had spent my entire life believing was gone.

My mother.

Not a memory.

Not a story.

Not a name spoken by someone else.

A real photograph.

A real person.

Alive.

Every sound around me disappeared.

The voices.

The footsteps.

The danger outside.

Everything.

There was only one sentence repeating in my mind.

Your mother didn’t die.

She’s been looking for you.

I stared at the stranger.

“Who are you?””

The man stepped into the room.

He looked to be in his fifties.

Tired eyes.

Weathered face.

The kind of face that carried years of secrets.

“My name is Enzo.””

Vincent immediately raised his weapon.

“How did you get down here?””

Enzo looked at him calmly.

“Because I built this tunnel.””

Everyone froze.

Donna Maria whispered:

“No.””

Enzo looked at her.

“Yes, Maria.””

Her face changed.

“You were supposed to be gone.””

He gave a sad smile.

“So were you.””

Vincent moved closer.

“You know him?””

Donna Maria didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Vincent’s eyes hardened.

“Another secret.””

Enzo looked at him.

“You have no idea how many secrets your family has carried.””

Vincent lowered his weapon slightly.

“Who is he?””

Donna Maria finally spoke.

“Enzo Ferraro.””

My heart stopped.

Ferraro.

My family name.

I looked at him.

“You’re related to me?””

He nodded.

“I’m your uncle.””

The word felt impossible.

Another family member.

Another person who had existed outside my life.

Another piece of a puzzle I never knew I was part of.

I laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was too much.

“An uncle.””

Enzo looked at me.

“I know this is difficult.””

“Difficult?””

My voice rose.

“I just found out my father existed. Then I found out he was connected to some secret war. Then I found out my mother might be alive.””

I pointed around the room.

“And now I have an uncle who appears from a hidden tunnel?””

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Vincent.

“You understand why this sounds insane, right?””

For a moment, the old mob boss almost smiled.

“Yes.””

That surprised me.

“Really?””

He nodded.

“Because yesterday I thought my mother was dead.””

His eyes moved to Donna Maria.

“Now she’s standing in front of me.””

The two of us understood each other.

Different lives.

Same betrayal.

Enzo placed the photograph on the table.

I picked it up.

The woman in the picture was younger.

But I knew her.

Not because I remembered.

Because something inside me recognized her.

Her eyes.

Her smile.

The way she held the child in her arms.

“Where is she?””

Enzo looked down.

“She’s been hiding.””

“From who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Vincent spoke.

“Lorenzo.””

Enzo nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at him.

“You knew about him?””

“I knew about everything.””

His answer made me angry.

“Then why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Enzo looked at Donna Maria.

“Because your mother wanted you to have a normal life.””

I laughed.

“A normal life?””

I held up the photograph.

“Was any of it real?””

Donna Maria stepped toward me.

“Luca.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You raised me. You loved me. I know that.””

My voice became quieter.

“But every important thing about me was hidden.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at the photograph.

“Of losing you.””

I looked away.

Because I believed her.

That was the worst part.

A sudden noise came from above.

Everyone stopped.

Enzo looked toward the ceiling.

“They found another entrance.””

Vincent immediately moved into action.

“How many?””

“Too many.””

Marco, who had remained silent, finally spoke.

“Then we leave.””

Vincent looked at him.

“You don’t give orders anymore.””

Marco accepted the insult.

“I deserve that.””

It was strange seeing him like this.

The man who once seemed untouchable looked exhausted.

Broken.

Like carrying his own guilt had finally become too heavy.

Vincent turned to him.

“Why are you helping us?””

Marco looked at the photograph of my mother.

“Because I failed your father.””

Silence.

“And I failed Adrian.””

He looked at me.

“I won’t fail his son too.””

I didn’t know whether to trust him.

But for the first time, I believed he meant it.

We moved deeper into the underground room.

Enzo opened another hidden door behind the shelves.

Inside was a small chamber.

There were documents everywhere.

Photographs.

Records.

Old newspapers.

And in the center was a large wooden table.

On it was a single file.

My name was written on the front.

Luca Ferraro.

I stared.

“What is that?””

Enzo looked at me.

“Everything.””

I opened it.

The first page was my birth certificate.

The second was a photograph of my parents.

The third was a letter.

From my mother.

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

*My son,*

The first two words almost broke me.

*If you are reading this, then the day I feared has arrived.*

I kept reading.

*I wanted you to grow up knowing love before knowing fear. I wanted you to know the smell of bread, the sound of laughter, and the feeling of being safe.*

My vision blurred.

*Your father died protecting you. I disappeared protecting you. Donna Maria raised you protecting you.*

I stopped.

A tear fell onto the paper.

*But one day, you will need to know why.*

I looked at Enzo.

“Why does everyone keep saying protecting me?””

Nobody answered.

I continued.

*The truth is simple, Luca. Your father discovered Lorenzo Moretti’s plan. He discovered that Lorenzo wasn’t trying to build an empire.*

I turned the page.

The next sentence made my blood run cold.

*He was trying to erase every person who knew where the money came from.*

I looked at Vincent.

He was reading over my shoulder.

His face changed.

“What money?””

Enzo answered.

“The original fortune.””

Vincent looked at him.

“What are you talking about?””

Enzo pointed to the documents.

“Before the Moretti name became feared, before the Ferraro name disappeared, there was another secret.””

He touched the file.

“The families weren’t criminals.””

Nobody spoke.

“They were guardians.””

I frowned.

“Guardians of what?””

Enzo looked at me.

“A foundation.””

“A foundation?””

“A financial network created after World War II.””

Vincent stared.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

Enzo continued.

“Your grandfathers created it to rebuild communities destroyed by war. They used businesses to move money, protect families, and help people survive.””

I looked at the documents.

“So what happened?””

Enzo’s expression darkened.

“Lorenzo changed the purpose.””

“He stole it.””

“Yes.””

Vincent looked furious.

“He turned protection into control.””

Enzo nodded.

“And when your fathers discovered it, Lorenzo decided they had to disappear.””

A noise echoed from the tunnel.

Closer this time.

Someone was coming.

Enzo closed the file.

“We need to go.””

But I didn’t move.

“One question.””

Everyone looked at me.

I looked at Donna Maria.

“What happened to my mother?””

Her face collapsed.

She walked closer.

“Your mother survived the attack.””

I held my breath.

“She was injured.””

“How injured?””

Donna Maria looked down.

“She thought you died.””

The words hurt.

“She believed the people who attacked your family killed you.””

I felt dizzy.

“But I was alive.””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t she find me?””

Donna Maria looked at me.

“Because someone convinced her you were gone.””

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Marco spoke.

Quietly.

“Me.””

Everyone turned.

Vincent stepped forward.

“What?””

Marco closed his eyes.

“I was told you were dead, Luca.””

I stared.

“And you believed them?””

“I was wrong.””

His voice cracked.

“I was a coward.””

The anger inside me burned.

“You knew my mother?””

“Yes.””

“You knew she was alive?””

“No.””

He looked at me.

“But I knew she was searching.””

The room became silent.

Before I could respond, the tunnel lights suddenly went out.

A voice came through the darkness.

A voice we all recognized.

Lorenzo.

“Family reunions are always beautiful.””

Everyone froze.

His voice echoed through the chamber.

“Especially before they end.””

Vincent raised his weapon.

“Show yourself.””

Lorenzo laughed.

“No.””

A pause.

“I think Luca deserves to hear the truth first.””

I looked around.

“About what?””

The voice answered:

“About why your mother disappeared.””

Silence.

Then:

“About why your father died.””

My heart pounded.

Lorenzo continued.

“And about why…”

The lights flickered back on.

A figure stood at the entrance.

An old man.

Elegant suit.

Calm smile.

Eyes like Vincent’s.

But colder.

Lorenzo Moretti.

He looked directly at me.

And said:

“Your father wasn’t protecting you from me.””

May you like

A pause.

“He was protecting me from you.””
