Amused

Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Empire

The name echoed through the underground room.

Your uncle.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not Vincent.

Not Donna Maria.

Not Marco.

Not even Isabella.

Because everyone understood what that name meant.

Vincent Moretti had spent his entire life believing he knew where his family’s power came from.

His father.

His father’s friends.

The people who built the empire before him.

But now, standing beneath an old Sicilian bakery, he was being told that everything he knew was incomplete.

Maybe even false.

Vincent lowered his weapon slightly.

“My uncle died before I was born.””

Isabella looked at him.

“That’s what you were told.””

His eyes became colder.

“Everyone in my family said he died.””

“Yes.””

“Then everyone was lying.””

Isabella didn’t answer.

That silence was enough.

Vincent turned toward Donna Maria.

“Mother.””

The old woman looked away.

His voice became quieter.

“Did you know?””

Donna Maria closed her eyes.

“I knew his name.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

A tear rolled down her face.

“Yes.””

The answer hit harder than any bullet.

Vincent stepped back.

“How long?””

“Since before you were born.””

He stared at her.

“All these years…”

“I was trying to protect you.””

He laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

His eyes moved around the room.

“Protect me from the truth. Protect me from enemies. Protect me from pain.””

He looked at Donna Maria.

“But nobody ever thought about protecting me from living a lie.””

The old woman looked broken.

“I was wrong.””

The words were simple.

But they carried twenty years of regret.

I stood quietly, watching them.

I understood Vincent more than I expected.

Because I knew what it felt like to suddenly discover your entire life had missing pages.

But unlike me, Vincent wasn’t just discovering a family secret.

He was discovering that the foundation of everything he built might have been based on a lie.

Isabella walked toward the table.

“The man you called your uncle was named Lorenzo Moretti.””

Vincent looked at her.

“Where is he?””

She hesitated.

“He is closer than you think.””

A cold feeling moved through the room.

Marco suddenly spoke.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

He looked at Isabella.

“You can’t mean…”

She smiled.

“Yes.””

Marco’s face lost its confidence.

For the first time since I met him, he looked afraid.

Vincent noticed.

“Tell me.””

Marco stayed silent.

Vincent stepped toward him.

“I said tell me.””

Marco looked at Vincent.

“Lorenzo didn’t disappear.””

“Where is he?””

Marco swallowed.

“He built something bigger than your father’s empire.””

“What?””

Marco looked at me.

“He built a system.””

I frowned.

“A system?””

“A network.””

He looked back at Vincent.

“Politicians. Businesses. Criminal organizations. Financial institutions.””

Vincent’s expression darkened.

“You’re saying my uncle controlled all of this?””

“No.””

Marco shook his head.

“I’m saying your uncle created it.””

The room became silent.

Isabella nodded.

“Your family thought they were building power.””

She looked at Vincent.

“But Lorenzo was building control.””

Vincent stared at the floor.

“How?””

Marco answered.

“By making everyone believe they needed him.””

A loud noise came from above.

Everyone looked toward the ceiling.

The people outside were getting closer.

Isabella checked the entrance.

“We don’t have much time.””

Vincent looked at her.

“Why should I trust you?””

The question was fair.

She smiled slightly.

“You shouldn’t.””

That surprised him.

“I’m not asking for trust.””

She pointed at the recipe card.

“I’m asking you to understand.””

She looked at me.

“Your father hid the final piece.””

I held up the card.

“The recipe?””

She nodded.

“But not because it contained information.””

She stepped closer.

“It contained a name.””

I frowned.

“What name?””

She looked at Vincent.

“The person who ordered the first betrayal.””

Marco’s face changed.

“No.””

Vincent looked at him.

“You know.””

Marco shook his head.

“I know what I was told.””

“By who?””

Marco didn’t answer.

Vincent’s voice became dangerous.

“By who?””

Marco finally whispered:

“Lorenzo.””

The room fell silent.

I looked at Vincent.

His uncle.

The person who had supposedly been gone for decades.

The person behind everything.

The person who had turned families against each other.

But one question remained.

“Why?””

Everyone looked at me.

I continued.

“Why would he do all this?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Then Donna Maria spoke.

“Because your families found something.””

“What?””

She looked at the recipe card.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

She took a deep breath.

“Proof that the people who control the world are not always the people whose names appear.””

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It will.””

She looked at Vincent.

“Your father and Adrian discovered Lorenzo had been secretly moving money and information for years.””

Vincent’s jaw tightened.

“My father knew?””

“Yes.””

“And he did nothing?””

“He tried to stop him.””

Donna Maria’s voice became quieter.

“That’s why he died.””

Vincent looked at the floor.

“And Adrian?””

“The same reason.””

I stared at the recipe.

Two fathers.

Two families.

One secret.

Suddenly, my entire childhood made sense.

The secrecy.

The fear.

The way Donna Maria always looked over her shoulder.

But there was still something I didn’t understand.

“Why me?””

Everyone became quiet.

I looked at Donna Maria.

“Why did you choose me?””

She walked closer.

“You weren’t chosen.””

“Then what?””

Her eyes filled with sadness.

“You were protected.””

I waited.

“Your father knew he was being hunted. He knew Adrian Moretti’s family was being watched.””

She touched the recipe card.

“He needed someone Lorenzo would never suspect.””

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“A child.””

My heart sank.

“He hid the truth inside your family.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t understand.””

“Your father knew that Lorenzo would search for powerful people.””

She looked at Vincent.

“He would search for heirs. Leaders. People with influence.””

Then she looked back at me.

“But he would never search for a poor baker’s son.””

The words hurt.

Because they were true.

My ordinary life had been my disguise.

Suddenly, the lights returned.

Everyone froze.

That shouldn’t have happened.

The room above was under attack.

Then a phone rang.

The sound cut through the silence.

Nobody wanted to answer.

Finally, Vincent picked it up.

“Who is this?””

A familiar voice responded.

An old man.

Calm.

Confident.

“Hello, Vincent.””

The color disappeared from his face.

He knew the voice.

Everyone saw it.

“Lorenzo.””

The name came out like a curse.

A quiet laugh came through the phone.

“You sound surprised.””

Vincent gripped the phone.

“You’ve been hiding for thirty years.””

“No.””

A pause.

“I’ve been waiting.””

“For what?””

“For you to become exactly what I needed.””

Vincent’s eyes narrowed.

“What does that mean?””

The voice continued.

“It means your father failed.””

Silence.

“Your mother failed.””

Another pause.

“And now you have finally brought me the last piece.””

Everyone looked at me.

My blood ran cold.

Lorenzo continued.

“The boy.””

Vincent stepped forward.

“You stay away from him.””

A soft laugh.

“Still protecting strangers.””

“He is not a stranger.””

The line went quiet.

Then Lorenzo spoke.

“Interesting.””

His voice became colder.

“Because Luca doesn’t know the truth.””

I looked at the phone.

“What truth?””

Nobody answered.

Lorenzo did.

“The truth about why your mother died.””

My entire body froze.

“What?””

Vincent looked at me.

Donna Maria covered her mouth.

Lorenzo continued:

“Ask Donna Maria what happened the night she abandoned you.””

The call ended.

The room remained silent.

I turned slowly.

Toward the woman who raised me.

The woman who taught me everything.

The woman who had always said she protected me.

“Donna…”

She looked at me.

Her eyes filled with tears.

And before she could speak, the underground door behind us opened.

A figure stood there.

Someone none of us expected.

Someone carrying an old photograph.

A photograph of my mother.

Alive.

The stranger looked at me.

And said:

“Luca Ferraro…”

A pause.

“Your mother didn’t die.””

May you like

My heart stopped.

“She’s been looking for you.””
